The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care

Nice spirit of Christian charity there.

"The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular."

What is so hard to understand about that praytell?

Kinda like saying to be an atheist you need to believe in God.

If you take public funds should your services not be secular?

Why is the Catholic church under contract with the city to begin with?

Why aren't they doing charitable work on their own?

And on to the most important issue.... this church is using people who are in need as a bargaining chip.

A sin is a sin is a sin in the eyes of God except one.

Are Catholics standing against all sin...or just homosexuality?

I doubt they are sinless themselves!!

When the church so blatantly tries to effect the decisions of the government then they should lose their tax exempt status.

Absolutely.

Any non-profit that takes up political advocacy should lost its tax-exempt status upon advocation.

Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.

How Christ-like of those scumbags.

Maybe the Atheists could take over this charitable operation?

Nah, they aren't sinless, they just go to confession a lot!

If you are given public funds to provide services to the public can then decide who to and who not to serve?

According to the article, the church spends $10 million a year of its own money on the poor in DC.

No doubt another community would be willing to accept the help instead.

Is there any reason to believe that if the Catholic Church had the power today that they held during the aptly named "Dark Ages" they wouldn't still be burning witches?

The catholic "church" should be classified as a terrorist organization, as all religious entities should.

Maybe the Atheists could take over this charitable operation?

....the church gets state funding for the social programs, they just administer them for a cut........

......if they drop out, then other agencies could bid to administer the programs......

.......most states find it easier to run these programs themselves, but some think that they can save a few bucks by contracting it out to lower paying (to their staff) agencies.......
