In a case that raises questions about online journalism and privacy rights, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a formal request to an independent news site ordering it to provide details of all reader visits on a certain day. The grand jury subpoena also required the Philadelphia-based Indymedia.us Web site "not to disclose the existence of this request" unless authorized by the Justice Department, a gag order that presents an unusual quandary for any news organization.

Wow. This thread will be fun, as long as its not ignored by the most ardent civil liberties liberals.

You post an interesting article and the first thing you do is smear mierda all over it by making it a partisan thing.

AMERICA IS FINISHED!!!!

:-(

The libbies only concern themselves with privacy issues when it's Republicans who are running the Justice Department.

Beginning in 2013, it'll be a big issue again, along with the Iraq War, Afghanistan, the Patriot Act, and so on. In fact, wasn't there a thread up a couple of days ago criticizing Republicans for not helping to "strengthen" the Patriot Act?

They're funny, these libbies.

H.C. - is what I stated far from the truth?

"H.C. - is what I stated far from the truth?"

If you're suggesting that this hasn't been done before Obama, then yes, your statement is far from the truth.

You treat the story as if the most important thing is that Obama's DOJ is the one pursuing this.

EVERYBODY BACKTRACK TO 06/25/08 - what were y'all up to that day - think quickly - you may need an alibi!

Sure Hagbard. I can already see the outrage. CorkSarvisforthLarryMohrVille will be along any moment to excoriate Obama's Justice Department for First Amendment violations.

No--wait. I think there might be a Fox News thread up somewhere.

H.C. - When are you going to admit that this administration is taking more liberties than any of the previous? It's everyday - the report anybody to flag@whitehouse.gov for ANYONE you hear speaking adversely to the healthcare bill (which I'm proud to say I was reported on multiple occasions), etc. - they're WHACK!

You're on a roll this morning, RIR. Sleep through the alarm or something?

H.C. - When are you going to admit that this administration is taking more liberties than any of the previous?
#10 | Posted by nanc

I don't even know how to respond to that question.

I just think that if this thread were up 18 months ago, and the headline was "Bush DOJ Demands Newssite Visitor Information", and that the grand jury further demanded that the inquiry be kept secret, that we would be seeing more than one libbie ring in by now.

But no. Libbies are fairly insouciant now about all the things that really pissed them off while Bush was around.

#13

If people were honest, they would admit that RIR is right.

#12 | Posted by Hagbard_Celine - what about the "orders" to not speak to FOX NEWS? I hope you realize this before your rights are encroached upon. Yet he allows gitmo detainees "Miranda Rights".

"what about the "orders" to not speak to FOX NEWS?"

Dana Perino admitted that Bush did essentially the same thing to MSNBC.

Libbies are fairly insouciant now about all the things that really pissed them off while Bush was around.

Some democrats may be.

But the question is easily turned around. Were you or any other GOP'ers upset over this stuff during the Bush admin?

I was then, and my feelings have not changed. In fact, I'm a little more upset because I expect more from this President.

Oh, and you're wrong about Larry, RIR.

He's practically stroking out over a lot of the stuff the President is doing these days.

Not really. But I'm not really into faux outrage.

You don't strike me as particularly upset. You spent your first six posts in this thread deflecting to Bush, and criticizing other posters.

Good of you to show up, at least, even if you're just pretending. More than I can say for your libtard pals.

H.C. - You're not usually a tit-for-tat guy, but even you must admit obama gets a pass from every news org besides FOX - all those who kiss his hiney took bush to task regularly, ad nauseum.

thinkprogress.org

p.s. At least bush took it for several years before "freezing" msnbc out and didn't order those in his administration to ignore them.

"But the question is easily turned around. Were you or any other GOP'ers upset over this stuff during the Bush admin?"

I don't call myself a GOP'er, Hag, I'm more conservative than that. But, if I may interject, I'll answer YES to your question. The Bush administration spent wildly, increased size of government and gave the government more power over us. The Obama administration has continued and increased all the above to an incredible extent. MOST people don't even seem to be aware of the government's power. Here is just a small example, it should be required watching by every U.S. citizen:

You have to admit that FOX hit the ground running even before January.

Well, I guess you don't have to admit it, but you should.

Oh, and Nanc, you have to listen to/watch Rachel Maddowe. She is definitely not an Obama Cheerleader.

Full disclosure: I've got a bit of a man-crush on Maddowe.

"The grand jury subpoena also required the Philadelphia-based Indymedia.us Web site "not to disclose the existence of this request" unless authorized by the Justice Department, a gag order that presents an unusual quandary for any news organization."

See the video in my #21. It's worse than you think. All you "progressives" who like big government absolutely MUST see it.

#25 - GOOD LUCK WIDDAT!

Yes, I was proud of her when she took him to task last month. Glenn Beck is another who holds to no party line - he jumps EVERYBODY! So, he's a little hyper...

"In other words, you're as screwed in the noggin as you sound?"

Mornin', Doc? Who's in your barrel today? Looks like Vernon, Cookfish and the rest of your favorites are missing so you've selected RIR. Hold on for a while and I'll see if I can find a Palin thread somewhere. I'll link you to it to give you something to do today.

-I've got a bit of a man-crush on Maddowe

Hmmmm, I'm trying to figure out how that at would work....

Doc needs something to do. He teaches three classes a semester, which gives him something like 36 free hours a week from 8-5.

Fair enough though. He's Exhibit A as to why higher education is screaming for reform. And between sky-high tuition costs, astronomical student debt loads, and the resurgence of inexpensive and convenient online education, the free market is doing all the heavy lifting for us. Enjoy it while you can Doc.

"Beck? Hyper? Not any moreso than your run-of-the-mill former drug and alcohol addict who slathers himself in Vicks Vaporub to induce faux crying jags."

You gotta believe Doc on this. He has had intimate personal experience with every form of alcohol and hallucinogin on earth and his cryin' jags are REAL!

Well, actually, Jest, it's common knowledge that Glennn Beck has a drug and alcohol addiction problem. No smear; he's mentioned it. And the use of Vicks Vaporub to create those ridiculous tears to accompany his equally ridiculous faked crying jags can be accessed on YouTube. Now, put your Hillbilly Heroin aside and go feed the pigs.

I dont know. Were you under the impression the left is all about personal redemption?

Frankly, I have a major problem with people who declare themselves to be former addicts. Ever heard of the dry drunk syndrome, e.g. George Bush?

Sorry, former addicts get me into the mode where I'm checking my wallet, counting my fingers and toes, and waiting for the scam to reveal itself.

"The first time I saw that I thought it was some kind of swahili joke or something."

It's definitely a bit jarring.

"Now, put your Hillbilly Heroin aside and go feed the pigs."

Haven't had pigs since in MO back in the forties, Doc. No hillbilly heroin here either, just suds and an ocassional scotch. I'm just a good ol' boy, an Appalachian-American leading a tame life here on the mountain...not like you lively denizens in the halls of academia. 55 posts. And no libbies ringing in on the topic at hand.

What a surprise. Remember when they would go around saying stuff like, "Pay as you go!", and "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism!". They were funny then, balling up their little fists, pretending like they actually cared about stuff like that.

At least bush took it for several years before "freezing" msnbc out

So that somehow makes it okay?

"I really don't know, Jest. Why don't you do some research and report back around the 150th anniversary of Woodstock?"

Now, Doc, you KNOW I cain't count that hi. I gotta go fer now. Gonna clean my .58 caliber Cook and Brother carbine and sit out on the porch with it in case some over-edumacated yankee comes up hair. Don't let it be YOU, Doc, 'cuz I kinda like 'ya and woodnt want to draw a bede on 'ya.

Obama's socialist Government wants to silence any and all opposition. Their attack on Fox News is not by accident it's part of their agenda. BLOGGERS are already the next target and if you think the Constitution will protect you think again, the main stream media is a willing participant in this attack along with Liberals who would be all too happy to trample the Constitution to further the agenda of their God Obama. Liberals support Obama's socialistic regime because they are all weak minded people who embrace Socialism...

Call me dense, but I don't know what you just wrote. Who are "people", "their" and "him"?

How did asking this potus** a question warrant this sort of behavior? And I don't care if he was a mother-murdering, drug addicted, crossdressing, peeping tom!

The Toledo Police Department is part of the federal government under Obama.... a week before he was even elected?

Really how dumb you gotta be? You gave the "libbies" all of 10 mins to respond on the backpage. Lets be real you had this rant pent up to go no matter what the fuck went down. Your sucking hard on the cock of bias!. And you've done this everytime whether there was libbie outrage or not. You've been quick to point out the hypocrisy even when it doesn't actually exist or before you've even given anyonce a chance to prove otherwise. Its because you don't care, you've got a narrative and your sticking to it, be damned to hell with reality.

And everyone on the left thought it would be Bush-2 who would abuse the rights of THE PEOPLE! Who's next? RRRRRRRRRRRCADE?

For those of you with a short memory, during the Bush term they had the indymedia servers straight up stolen and renditioned. For 3 months the feds claimed they didn't know anything about anything. The servers did not exist, at least until the lawsuits worked themselves thru and it was discovered the FBI was sent in to steal them. And by "steal" I mean confiscated without warrant or notice. And this went down in the UK. I mean really?

At least this time, the feds are "asking". Thats an improvement right?

Another libbie finally responds, with another non-answer to the topic at hand

Criminal subversion of lawfull authority. To purposefully ignore or disregard the authority of that document, to undo or eliminate, without the authority to do so, its law.
It's in that piece of paper.
They do not have such an authority. They must have specific evidence against an individual, and state the same, and yes virginia, it is in there. Just like the prohibition on representation of business, except for negotiating trade agreements, which benefit our nation.
Govcorpco. is the largest organised crime operation on the planet. All 4 branches, criminal and traiterous in their representation.

Massive fail.

The following changes the flavor a good bit.

From the article: "Update 1:59pm E.T.: A Justice Department official familiar with this subpoena just told me that the attorney general's office never saw it and that it had not been submitted to the department's headquarters in Washington, D.C. for review. If that's correct, it suggests that U.S. Attorney Tim Morrison and Assistant U.S. Attorney Doris Pryor did not follow department regulations requiring the "express authorization of the attorney general" for media subpoenas -- and it means that neither Attorney General Eric Holder nor Acting Attorney General Mark Filip were involved. I wouldn't be surprised to see an internal investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility; my source would not confirm or deny that."
