A senior Iranian prosecutor accused three Americans detained on the border with Iraq of espionage on Monday, the first signal that Tehran intends to put them on trial. Relatives say Shane Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27, were hiking and strayed across the border from Iraq.

I thought this was weird as hell back when they were arrested. What kind of an idiot goes on a hiking trip in a war zone?

There is something missing from this story. It's either common sense or the plot to a Tom Clancy novel.

Tragic when innocent lives are caught up in the net of political manipulation. As if anyone didn't realize earlier, the rulers of Iran are a bunch of thugs.

True. They are threatened by youth. Sad! Very sad.

I know I am going to get a lot of grief with this statement but oh well. Why do we as Americans think we can waltz right into any Country that we want to with impunity?? Granted these folks were aparently just hiking and missed the border but still Why do we think we some top shit that don't stink?? I don't get it I really don't. When in Rome as they say.

Larry

Larry, how did you weigh in on the reporters held in North Korea?

Remember to be truthful.

I don't get it I really don't. When in Rome as they say.

I agree, but they should have kept them for 36 hours, realized that they are not spies and let them go.

The Iranians are smart people, but this particular group in charge is not the real people of Iran, I mean the Persians. The mullahs in power and Ahmadinejad are not of Persian decent. They are mostly Turkish and Arab. They real Persians love America and the West.

I agree, Larry, but these mental giants are the same who held the American hostages in '79 and brought Iran back to the Dark Ages.

This government is afraid of its own people, the youth. A very large percentage of Iran's population is under 30 years old (pop explosion after the war).

The same. My Father has always told Me if You go into any foreign Country abide by their rules and don't expect preferential treatment. He has also said that if I get into trouble I can ask for Americas help buit I should NOT expect it just because I am an American.

Because they said they weren't spies?

They'll end up getting traded for some Iranian "diplomats" captured in Iraq.

And when they get home, they should be neutered, to improve the species.

The Iranians believe that they can get away with this without consequences, casting more embarassment towards our country. Our weak CIC doesn't have the guts to do anything more than saberrattling, and the Iranians know it. I feel sorry for the three captured Americans.

President Obama won't give the Iranians missiles for kidnapping Americans like Reagan did.

I feel sorry for the three captured Americans.

I feel sorry for the Georgians who got invaded by Russia while Dubya hid under the bed.
Then again, Bush had already lost two wars, no sense going for the trifecta.

Aren't there enough beautiful places to hike here? Yeah, let's go traipsing around the ME! Don't they read State Dept. travel warnings? What kind of idiots (albeit my fellow citizens) decide to go hiking in the ME? Would somebody please 'splain to me the logic in this act? Stupid, foolish and fool-hardy acts that give Iran leverage against us.

Would somebody please 'splain to me the logic in this act?

Venturers looking for adventure, well they found it.

kinda like those guys that jump off the cliffs in their flying suits in Norway.Good chance to crash into the rocks but they still do it.For the rush.

Call it the ignorance of youth. We all have done stupid shit in our youth that we aren't exactly proud of. Consider it a exploration in the craziness factor. I'll be quite honest. I would love to go to Iran and meet some smoking hot Iranian babes. That being said I ain't about to do so while both Mine and those Smoking Hot babes Countries are at odds with each other. I may be drain bamaged but I ain't that drain bamaged. I'll wait until tensions ease and I can afford a flight further than a 99 cent flight across My street. Thank You very much.

.. Ahmadinejad, asked about the spying accusations against the Americans, told reporters in Istanbul, Turkey, said he had no opinion about the case.

"It must be judged by the judiciary, whether they are spies or not," he said. "There are some Iranians who have spent many years in prison without doing anything wrong, in American prisons. .."

If this is true then he has a point.. of sorts. But if these are tourists he's making a tremendous mistake by trying them. Plus, he wears white socks with black shoes and pants. Putzy.

These idiots deserve whatever they get. Anyone stupid enough to go backpacking near the border of Iran should pay for it if they get caught. This was just pure stupidity and I have no sympathy for them.

Oh, really? You would support military action against Russia?

I'm somewhat sympathetic to this point of view.

These people are idiots for even being there.

The names of these individual might be Jewish. I wonder if that plays into this.

They may not be spies but they are stupid for even going close to that border.

I wonder if that plays into this.

You mean why they thought it was a good idea to take that hike or why Iran is charging them?

Just like that kid that was beaten in Thailand for vandalism (Michael Faye?), you get what you get. If you want to see the world and experience adventure, go scuba diving on the Great Reef, or hiking in the Rockies.

Stupid fucks like these do nothing but muddy the waters. "Rachael Corrie" their asses.
