Yuan Weimin, the former head of China's Chinese Olympic Committee claims in a new autobiography that China reached a secret deal to support the candidacy of Jacques Rogge as head of the International Olympic Committee in return for his support of Beijing's Olympic bid. "We had a mutual understanding that we all understood clearly, even if it was not in writing," writes Yuan.

Alas, poor Yuan Weimin.

I knew him, Horatio.

I hear the name of the book will be "Going Rogge"

Has the Olympic Committee finally adopted that as their new slogan? Might as well say it since it's been the de facto standard of the Olympics for so long...

Whatever, China put on a great show.

Bargains like this happen all the time, it's called politics. I can see why this is big deal in China, but here, where we've got baseball juicers appearing before Congress, we all know professional sports is a greasy business.

Kind of like Barry with Acorn and the UAW....

It NOTHING like that dumbass.

Of COURSE you can put on a great show when you lie, bribe and cheat!

"we all know professional sports is a greasy business."

Which is one of the reasons why the Olympics doesn't allow pros in most events.

You'd really have to have no idea what the Olympics is to not know that the Olympics is marketed as being above this type of shit.

China was allowed to break the rules in gymnastics so this shouldn't be a surprise anyway.

Who cares? They put on one helluva show.

Thanks for the 'entertainment' China.

How old will the gymnasts be next Olympics?

Sully, if you choose to believe what marketing wants you to think about the Olympics, that's your own dumb fault.

The scandals etc. are a small price to pay for the benefit of bringing all the nations together to compete and celebrate humanity. But it's also business, and like any business, it gets dirty.

How old will the gymnasts be next Olympics?

They will be Pedobear-approved, that's for sure.

Quick, throw the red flag.

I don't see why this is any big revelation - I was in Atlanta for the '96 Olympics, and the graft and horseshit that went on over that was epic.

Paying off the olympic committee?

As if the chinese invented that idea.

Which is one of the reasons why the Olympics doesn't allow pros in most events.

Define "pro". Most national athletes are on some form of payroll and many of the team sports don't even pretend to consist of amateurs. Basketball and hockey come to mind.

^.^

Yeah, I wasn't thinking this was news ... after all China cheated AT the Games, so it's not surprising that they cheated to GET the Games...

Whether or not I believe the PR of the Olympics people has nothing to do with the fact that stories like this undermine the credibility of the IOC.

"The scandals etc. are a small price to pay for the benefit of bringing all the nations together to compete and celebrate humanity."

Jesus Fucking Christ, you have some set of balls to insinuate I'm naive in the same post where you spew out this touchy-feely drivel.

That's why I used the word "most" as a qualifier to my statement.

Hold on there big fella. Haven't you ever wanted to buy the world a Coke? Teach them all to sing in perfect harmony?

But seriously, the IOC is very susceptible to corruption. This has been evident for quite some time. I still love the Olympics. How can you not, it's the #2 sporting event in the world?

Probably I just like big parties. Anybody got plans to go to South Africa for World Cup 2010?

I'm just wondering how much howling would be going on if it was the U.S. being accused....

All you'd hear all day from 'certain' drooling idiots is how uniquely corrupt we are.

There is absolutely no news here. Seems unbelievably lame to me actually, if this is the extent of it.

Jesus, hosting the Olympics is worth un-told billions in the back pockets of the shakers-n-movers. You think Obama and his Chicago buddies wouldn't have been lining their pockets, had the committee chosen that city??

China would support this guy in bid for Olym Comm president?? Yikes -- this is like Kindergarten stuff.

JM

The IOC are so corrupt they make the Mafia look like the damned Girl Scouts in direct comparison.

China has, of course, long understood the concept of the neccessity of providing "fragrant grease" ie Bribes in order to keep the wheels turning.

Makeing China getting the Olympics look practically inevitable in hindsight.

We should have a "Least Surprising News o' the Day" Flag on individual threads.

Wonder if this one or the "Blackwater Bribed Iraqi officials 1 Million Follars to Keep Quiet about Massacre" thread would win?

Be Well.

There are no non-pro.

The amount of cash that it takes to get to that level require funds from somewhere.

Another scam.
