It's in Texas, not too far from the Mexican border. It sounds like it's orchestrated, para-military, on gradutation day, a time when there are LOTS of targets. It's not somebody who snapped on anti-depressants or just a spur of the moment deal. My bet is that it's one of the Mexican drug cartels or some anti-government malitia sorts.

The sprawling complex is home to at least 4,929 active duty officers and 45,414 enlisted. Civilian employees total nearly 9,000.

That's a lot of stressed soldiers...but it seems planned with up to three shooters at least one with a high powered rifle.

9000 civillian employees, how many do think are of Mexican descent? Easy to get fake ID's and replace three legit employees with three shooters. Somebody else smuggles teh arms in. It's actually quite a distance from the Mexican border. I spent a year at Hood in 66-67 when I was with the 2nd Armored Division. We never went to Mexico because it was too far for a weekend pass. At the time it was an open base, but things were different then.

Reports indicate that one was a semiautomatic, but it was still amazing to do that much damage with just handguns. That's why they initially believed there was more than one shooter.

Not unreal at all. The standard M9 military sidearm has a 15 round capacity (16 if you load one in the chamber with a full clip.)

Moreover, even if the clip only held ten rounds, it would not have made any difference. It takes 2 seconds to switch out clips and charge the gun and less time than that if you practice.

We don't know for sure yet, but I'd say the evidence suggests it could go either way.

When someone is charged with a crime but not convicted of it a media person is required to not determine guilt and thus refers to the suspect as the "Alleged" killer/rapist etc or say things like "if he is the one who perpetrated this".

I see a lot of crap about the number of rounds fired in a short time.

1. I don't normally shoot semi autos but I'll bet that I could dump 50 to 100 aimed rounds in 15 minutes if I had the magazines available.

2. The number of injured does not need to equal the number of person's who were shot. I would bet that some of the injuries or so called wounded may be caused by other types of injuries. Perhaps they were trampled by folks attempting to get out of the line of fire.

On a different issue. I was a little surprised that President Obama waited so long in his speech to acknowledge the shooting but I don't honestly believe that this indicates a lack of concern for those who were killed or injured.

All of the reports that I have seen seem to indicate that this was perpetrated by a single person who, for religious reasons, was opposed to his orders to go into a combat zone fighting against his co-religionists. He lost it. This does not justify or excuse his actions. He should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Since he is in the military voluntarily, he is and should be subject to the death penalty if found guilty.

I am aware that my use of the comma is frequently incorrect, but I try.

'Stressed and tired force' linked to military suicides

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An increase in the number of suicides among military personnel can be traced, in part, to a "stressed and tired force" made vulnerable by multiple deployments, a military leader said Wednesday.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, said the efforts have not sufficed. He noted that last year, for the first time, the suicide rate among military personnel has exceeded that of the civilian population. "What's going on?" he asked rhetorically.

The panel members made clear that, whatever is going on, it is complex. Chiarelli said the Army tallied 133 confirmed suicides last year and is still investigating another seven possible ones. At least 70 percent of the suicides had "some kind of relationship problem," he said. Often, the situation was worsened by something else, such as a financial or legal problem, he said.

And it wasn't just the trauma of war that appears to heighten the risk. The suicides were about evenly divided among those who had returned from deployment, those who were still deployed -- some on a third or fourth tour -- and those who had never been deployed, Chiarelli said.
