Conservatives owe NY-23 candidate Doug Hoffman immeasurable gratitude. He overcame impossible odds (single digits just a month ago) to come within two points of defeating Democrat Bill Owens. Hoffman had zero name recognition. National Republican Party officials dumped nearly $1 million into the race on behalf of radical leftist GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava, who then turned around, endorsed Owens and siphoned off 5 percent of the vote with her name still on the ballot after she dropped out.

Conservatives' money went to pay for specious attack ads against Hoffman run by the NRCC like this.

"Scozzafava, who was endorsed by far Left blogger Markos Moulitsas Zuniga and backed by Planned Parenthood, the National Education Association, and card-check-promoting trade unions, was denied the congressional seat because movement conservatives refused to support Arlen Specter in a skirt. This is a victory of principle.

Better a donkey in office that acts like a donkey than a donkey in elephant's clothing making a complete ass of the GOP."

Now, THAT is the real story.

Conservatism still is alive and well and in NY too.

Excellent article! Is there any difference between the two medicine shows? I was tempted to switch to pub during the Reagan years but....WTF? There is no difference!

Yes Pray, something you as a well tuned kneeler at the party altar would never get.

Conservatism still is alive and well and in NY too.

Alive and well but not holding public office. If NY-23 is a victory for conservatives, I hope they have lots more victories like that in the years to come.

Phew! TY fer the cheap laugh there.

Please, by all means, do continue to try and define anyone who isn't a wingnutty, batshiat insane extremist rtard like Hoffman or Palin as being a "radical leftist".

Not just cos it will continue the GOP's downward slide into well deserved political marginalisation but also do it just fer the Lulz.

Be Well.

That fat ugly bitch is a radical leftist, Spud.

Sorry.

Sorry.

Yes, you are, Jeff.

One sorry SOB.

Spud is sorry to see you become one of the GOP's Pod People.

Be Well.

RC, rather win the war than this one battle. Thta is the significance of this one IMO.

And that is strewth to use the Cokehead Canucks modus operandi.

Not a pod person, Spud.

Just someone who recognizes the difference between a moderate and a leftist.

This woman is a leftist.

Arlen Specter is a moderate, he also looks like Golem/Smeegal.

Maybe, but you guys sound like the liberals who backed Nader in 2000 after it helped cost Bush the election. The desire to win elections will always prevail over the desire for ideological purity.

Oops: After it helped cost Gore the election.

Don't touch the stuff, actually.

Pot head? Hellz yeah, but that's about it aside from micro brew and the odd glass of red wine.

Are you ever right about anything?

Just someone who can't recognize the difference between a moderate conservative and a foamy-mouthed extremist conservative wingnut.

FTFY.

Be Well.

Why only the odd glass of red wine, tater-boy?

That's some seriously good shit, if you are drinking vino from Italy, of course.

foamy-mouthed extremist conservative wingnut.

I argued yesterday that this moral majority bullshit, is just that.

Bullshit.

However, a limited government, free-market capitalist doesn't fit your little term IMO.

PS - you have to admit, Arlen Specter does resemble Golem and awful lot.

Harumph! Next you'll be asserting that Henry Waxman resembles the original Phantom of the Opera

Crazy talk is that!

Madness.

Be Well.

Spud,

My wife doesn't follow politics at all.

I made her watch the John Roberts confirmation hearings and her first comment was:

"Holy shit! That guy looks just like Golemn!"

She's a perceptive broad. And she drinks beer and watches hockey to boot. She also digs Pink Floyd, but I don't need to re-hash our wedding song.

ugh... not again.

When Spud drinks Old World red it's usually French not Italian.

Mostly, Spud is a fan of the New World wines.

Locally Spud is a fan of the Gray Monk Cellars.

They make a kickass Pinot Gris.

Spud only drinks a glass or two cos usually that's all Spud needs to get a pleasant buzz on.

Damn, you got lucky.

Most women don't appreciate the subtle nuances of a good hockey game.

Remember the song.

Classic.

Be Well.

Spud,

To the best of my knowledge, Pinot Gris is a white.

Not a problem, whites are cool too.

I've tried the French wines and just can't get into them.

Give me a Barolo or a Brunello Di Montalcino though, and I am in heaven.

California has some great Cabernet Sauvingons as well.

If you want value, I HIGHLY recommend an Argentinian Malbec. Most I've had best other so-called quality reds that are twice the price.

Most women don't appreciate the subtle nuances of a good hockey game.

She can hold her own in conversation with most guy hockey afficionados when it comes to the sport.

She has a signed Datsyuk jersey - her favorite player.

As for me - I have a generic all-red jersey sans a name on the back and I have a white Lidstrom jersey with the Captain's "C" on it. I hope to get is sigened before he retires - one of the best defensemen of all time IMO.

Willamette Valley's (Oregon) Pinots (gris and noir) are a well kept secret. I make sure I have them in the house at all times -- and always shipped directly from the smaller vineyards. I love impressing guests with something they can't buy in Texas -- or many places outside of Oregon.

This is the time of year they ship (most vineyards won't ship in the summer because of the temperature) and I'm waiting for a case now AAMOF.

I still have 7 bottles of a kick ass Pinot Noir 2006 from Willamette Valley that is supposed to peak in 2011. The other five bottles were great and I haven't opened one in over a year. I may uncork one this Christmas, though, to see how they are coming along.

Goat,

Regional specialties rock!

Michigan is not a great state for wine production, but its short summers produce some excellent Riesling as well as some decent Chardonay and Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris.

In Michigan, 'wine country' is mostly relegated to the Traverse City area (abundantly beautiful)

oldmission.com

the picture in the link doesn't do the area justice. It really is breath-taking.

I drive around the state taking pictures a lot when I'm on shore. I'm seeing more and more vineyards in Texas. I usually stop and pick up an obligatory bottle, but haven't found anything great yet (probably no surprise). But the Llano (pronounced 'YAHN o') vineyards have come a long way and may have some serious wines in the near future.

BTW, Jeff, you were right the other day about Bertuzzi.

WTF were management thinking there?

Trouble.

Capitol T.

It's scary.

Hall-of-fame front-office making THAT move???

Maybe they know something we don't. For Pete's sake this is the same front-office that ESPN credited with the single greatest draft of all time in any sport (1991) Vladimir Konstantinov, Sergei Federov, Nicklas Lidstrom.

Insane.

This is also the same front office that "discovered" Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg in the 5th and 6ht rounds of the draft. Johan Franzen, the Mule, was a late draft-pick too.

So, maybe Bertuzzi will hit pay-dirt, but I have my doubts.

You can see why I left the Republican Party a long time ago. In most cases they are just like the Democrats. Hoffman will get another chance next November. I and many other conservatives will be supporting him. These two parties have wrecked our country and put us into debt that a children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will have to pay.The problem with the Dems and Reps is that they don't want anyone else in the ball game and will do what ever it takes to make the game closed to everyone except themselves.
TO HELL WITH BOTH THEM!!!!!!!!!!

Better to let a liberal Democrat win than a liberal Republican. At least we'll know who conservatives need to run against and beat. And if they win anyway, there's no difference.
