Are America's youth too fat, dumb or dishonest to defend the nation against its enemies?

Right now, there are ample opportunities for rapists in Blackwater and Kellog-Brown-Root. But, why would there be any minimum standards for cannon foder?

A friend of mine had a son who couldn't pass the Army test. He had a 29 and needed a 31. I called the recruiter and asked him what could he do for this young lad. The recruiter said to send the boy to his office and he could give the young nan a special pencil and paper test that he could pass. Unfortunetly the kid changed his moind about joining the Army.

On a side note I had a 158 out of 160 on the AFQT when I was drafted. One of the questions I recall was, "Who was the Desert Fox?"

I wonder how well that 'time out' card works when you're pinned down in a mud puddle by enemy fire. I had days in Nam when I sure could have used a 'get me the fuck out of here' card.

Walk around the campus of America's most prestigious universities and you'll find there are few American students. I once had a class where the only non-Indian/non-Chinese people in the room were me and the professor. In my current job, I'm the only American citizen on my team.

The reality is that we can't afford to fight a war against India or China because we don't have the brains to figure out how to build our own weapons.

I believe it was 1999, but I was the acting XO in a Basic Training unit (Engineers in Ft Leonard Wood, Mo), and thats when I first heard/witnessed that shit.
I called some kid a "pussy" because he was dropping out of a company 2 mile run. The CG heard me (he was out for a run...bad timing), and told me he wanted to see me after PT for berating a recruit. Mind you, I simply called the kid a pussy because there were only about 2 weeks left in his AIT and he couldn't complete a 2 mile run.

I never showed to the CG's office. I figured there was no way he was going to know who the butter bar doing his 2 weeks was, and I was right.

There was a female named "Manycows", and long story short I told her "Private, you realize you're at the bottom of the totem pole, right?"...Immediately, and I mean immediately after saying that I about shit myself. I called my wife and told her I was getting out for good.

I retired at 42; when an old broken down parachutist can outrun and generally out PT 85% of his unit on a daily basis (and I was NEVER what anyone would call a runner) there is a problem. The average troop putting on the uniform for the last 8-10 years has been below the physical standards of the previous generation IMHO. They just never had to get up at the buttcrack of dawn and work, it was a shocker... The difference between the average and outstanding was plainly evident. I say that because the outstanding were shining stars, set the bar high and kept us old NCO's motivated to improve the pack; sometimes voluntarily, sometimes not so much.

Education and intelligience wise though, I must dissagree. The kids I pushed were ten times "smarter" than I was, if not "wiser" than us at their age. But that may be a bad comparison, the USAF has higher intelligience standards compared to the other services. Not bashing here, just stating a fact.

Someone mentioned the draft; great idea (the Isrealis pull it off quite well), but what a headache! It was like herding cats sometimes with an all volunteer force; I hate to think about pushing conscripts...

First of all, army statistics are like everything else the army does, a waste if time. What they are forgetting is that this is an all volunteer army so the brightest and fittest kids would avoid a career at ditch digging like the plague. The best volunteers get in the Air Force or Navy or they go to college and get real jobs. If they are really motivated to be trained to kill people they get into West Point. The only ones left are either brainwashed ignorant right wing dropouts that daddy want's out of the house or fat stupid idiots that can't figure out what else to do in the world.

It's not rocket science folks. Of course 75% are not meeting the army's ridiculously low standards. If you want real men in the armed forces you have to draft them.

Ringmaster... If you're saying that a military career is not a real job, you have NO CLUE. Military service has been declared a Profession, meeting all of the standards of a doctor, lawyer, ect.

To be considered a profession an occupation requires
a. An established recruiting standard
b. A certified, recognized career path requiring succesfull completion of educational and experience milestones
c. An ethical and enforced standard of conduct and performance exceeding normal levels and expectations

The average enlisted servicemember attains a college degree by their 15th year of service; in 3 of 5 (Coast Guard is included in time of war) an AA is required to progress beyond E-6. Rarely will you find an E-9 without one or more BA, MA, or even a PHD degrees.

Even in a time of war, 3-6 years of service can open eyes and minds. Who do you think, given the level of education and access to information today, would have the most motivation to learn as much as possible about politics, current events and history; the young troop waiting for orders to the AOR or his/her counterpart drinking their way thru college or flipping whoppers?
