borders, etc. In short, he likely didn't get in due to some natural appeal to moderates.

The tally of governor seats matters because the Dem Congress wants to hand the stacks of whatever cash goes to the states to a "friendly". Pleosi and Reid hate the thought of having some Republican use the money for programs that don't fit with the program, same as a Repubican WH/Congress would shudder to think of handing cash to, say, Deval Patrick in Mass. The economic recovery will most likely make progress in the next year, so I wouldn't expect anything like what happened in 1994. Besides, we know what the GOP actually did once they got in power. Rhetoric alone isn't going to cut it. Going so far right an being the 'party of NO!' is only going to hurt the GOP.

Unfortunately, Republicans have been shutting out moderates and have slipping party ID's. Best thing they could do is shut up Palin and rethink this exclusionary move to the right. It's killing them. They may pick up a few seats in the House in 2010, but the Dems have such a large majority that it probably won't make much difference.

If Palin does the same thing in Florida she did in NY-23 and Rubio becomes the GOP nominee for Senate rather than Crist I'd say you can kiss that one goodbye too.

The saying "It's the economy, stupid" is the key IMO. Voters are not discontent right now because of policies, they're frustrated by a bad economy - that's slowly turning around in the right direction. Bush 41 lost because of a recession.

Reagan also had to deal with an economy in the tank. He was down to 35% approval not so many months before his 1984 reelection. The economy started turning around and he won big. Ideology had little to do with it. Reagan had the same ideology at 35% approval that he had at 55%.

It was more than ideology with Reagan (my vote for him is proof aamof) He made people feel good about being an american. He was a good communicator.

Sure, there are blind partisans who ignore these things, but there are a lot of people like me to whom they mean more than party affiliation

That's not what I said. What I was referring to was the fact that the opportunity to vote for a black man for president was something that most just couldn't pass up. No one I no ever realistically believed that they would have that chance in their lifetime. I believe that Colin Powell would have won if he had run for the same reason.

Tell me what is "progressive" about a bunch of democrats who oppose gay marriage and like to fire missiles at Pakistan and kill people. Is it because they want to give people free health insurance? Does that make you "progressive" when you are still pro-war and ignorant of the rights of others?

I am just shocked the GOP took NJ. It appears that Christie's margin of victory was fraud-proof. It's NJ we are talking about, I am sure there was plenty of voter fraud, and with all that, the GOP still won.

Looks like the only Real Conservative that was in an election last night lost.

Well now that they have seen that Hussein can't save them I bet they are Really re-thinking about supporting obamacare or cap and trade.

reportst that I saw said that he ran a compaign on economic issues and it was one that was conducted without the personal attacks and stuff. not being there of course I have to rely on those reports.
so if thats an indication, then he may be really good.

Nah. Howard Dean is the kiss of death. Under his leadership, the Democratic Party gave up their bread and butter issues in favor of vague rhetoric and a rock star. Shouldn't be any surprise that the one-timers who showed up for Obama remain as apolitical as they were before his election.
