I don't see how destroying the middle class will really help them.

The less social mobility there is, the less chance they have of losing their place in the upper stratosphere. Especially their children, who may not be as capable as they are (Paris Hilton, while she is widely known, there are tens of thousand of male & female heirs like her).
It has to do with the concentration of wealth, the oligarchs want as much of it as they can get, with hands on the controls of the rest. How do they control the rest ? Through credit, and through the banks, they pump out credit cards to everyone, encouraging people to max out, thereby becoming enslaved to credit. So instead of a families monetary history being: marry, buy a house, pay it off, live in comfortable middle & older age, it becomes : get married, buy a house, get a mortgage, get credit cards, max out all credit, either spend the rest of your life paying off credit or get bankrupt and get on the train again.
The working people, would therefore live in perpetual servitude, paying all their income to the wealthy, either through bank payments, credit card payments or Wal-Mart purchases.
The American Oligarchy consists of about a million people. It is not organized in the sense of the mafia with strategic thinking, but is a loose collection of monied families and individuals, who oppose the public good. They want it all, and they don't care for social interlopers.
