In just two years, the country's estimated natural gas resources rose 39 percent, according to the Potential Gas Committee, an industry think tank. Some see abundant North American natural gas as the gateway to reduced dependence on foreign oil and a bridge toward carbon-free energy sources, since gas is the lowest-emission fossil fuel, the Houston Chronicle reports.

So just maybe the USA is actually energy self sufficient and could say screw the Middle East and the Israelis and Arabs.

If so I say disconnect us from the ME and allow it to become a desert from the perspective of average Americans. There is nothing in it for us.

Jimmy Carter tried that self sufficiency philosophy but found out that there is a very influential segment of America that wants us to be involved forever and dependent upon the Middle East. They could be Arabs or Israelis, but not Americans.

The worst thing to ever happen to Israel is an energy independent USA because that means where their Middle East location means squat to the USA.

January 18 2001 Natural Gas boomed My city too. It was a very sad day.

Larry

Good. Let's get some filling stations friggin built. Even if I put an expensive (and now virtually unavailable... thanks Honda) compressor in my garage, I'm 300 miles from the next station, with a CNG car with a 200 mile range.

Natural gas rocks, you can get 90% efficient home heating. You can get cars with lower emisions and just as good range, speed and acceleration as gasoline powered cars.

Whats this about Honda Lawnchair??

We need to bleed the middle east of their resources before tapping our own. Fuck 'em!...if not for the west, they'd STILL have no clue as to what was below their feet....

@Larry -

Honda was the primary investor in the only commercially-available home natural gas compressor (the "Phill"). They forced a bankruptcy abruptly a few months ago. They also have made the the only commercially available CNG car in North America (Civic GX), but make it virtually impossible to buy one. Their erratic behavior seems designed to make other investors and carmakers very hesitant to get into the game.

"We need to bleed the middle east of their resources before tapping our own."

We hit peak domestic oil production in 1970.

As is their right A1st. How come You think You are so arrogant that You should be able to dictate what another Country does with their natural resources?? Where do You get off saying fuck them let's bleed them dry of what they posess??

Larry

Thanks Lawnchair for the 411 appreciate it.

OK, then let me rephrase that..

"We need to bleed the middle east of their resources before totally depleting our own."

#13--- Sometimes because we don't put together a well thought out energy plan you're point may have merit.

What the fuck are you babbling about Larry? Where did I say that the middle east HAD to do anything specific with their natural gas? The ONLY thing they CAN DO with the vast majority of it is to SELL IT....

Yer another fool who believes that US oil imports depend entirely on the Middle East. Do some frakkin' research!!!

Canada is our number one supplier of crude oil.

The list:

1. CANADA
2. MEXICO
3. VENEZUELA
4. NIGERIA
5. SAUDI ARABIA
6. IRAQ
7. ALGERIA
8. ANGOLA
9. BRAZIL
10. COLOMBIA

Don't make it to the ME until numbers 5 and 6. In the Top 10, the only Arabs from whom we import oil are the Saudis.

And until we start running all of our vehicles on propane, we will continue to be dependent on other nations for most of the Black Gold.

The size and position of the hi-pressure tanks makes this great idea for semis and buses but awkward at best for cars. T Boone Pickens suggested this a few years back. I can well imagine our dear masters the oil companies don't like this idea.

NG powered vehicles were more common just a few years ago. NG is high octane (107?) so it would be great for higher performance vehicles.

... CNG has a high octane rating generally 120 or higher and is used as the primary fuel source in some light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. CNG is stored onboard vehicles in cylinders at pressures of 3000 to 5000 pounds per square inch.

On a per-gallon basis, CNG stored in the vehicle tank has about one-third less energy content than gasoline, which limits driving range. DOE says there are approximately 742 CNG refueling stations in the US, versus about 169,000 gasoline service stations. CNG typically is less expensive than gasoline, but CNG vehicles can cost between 1500 and 6000 dollars more. There are about 150,000 light-duty CNG vehicles out of a total of more than 225 million in the US.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. The US has backed Israel despite the fact that the countries that angered were oil producing ones. Without that hangup, the US may be even more apt to back them. Also, if the arab nations DON'T sell us oil, they won't have a lot of money for waging war, will they?

#18 - NG-powered vehicles? Hey, NorthGuy, you been holding out on us with your invention? What's the going rate for NorthGuy-powered vehicles?

Nyark nyark nyark

Soooooooooo... when are we going to drill for our own oil????

Drill here and drill now! Imagine us becoming energy independent (+nukes) or even exporters. This would allow us to disengage from Europe, Middle East and other god-forsaken place.

Umm, we export most if not all the oil here in the continental US, already.

But I like how it turns out that an industry Obama is supposedly ruining ------ is doing so well.

Such is the intellectual prowess of what's being substituted as the "right" now a day!

It is a serious pain in the ass to run cars and semi-trucks on CN gas. It costs to much to make liquid syn-fuels out of it but we do have a lot of it and coal for gasification we just need the technology and fuel companies to step up and make these alternate fuels economical and then we can tell the middle east and other oil-producing enemies to kiss our self-sufficient Big American asses.

They have carburetors now that run on liberal blathering...

And I hear they get 63 conservative fuck heads a gallon...

If stupid Pakistan can be the number 1 country in the world when it comes to running cars on CNG, what the hell is stopping us Americans from doing better???

pakistaniat.com

Give ourselves some freedom from the Arab mafia.

All CNG cars are "dual fuel".

The CNG tank looks a lot like a scuba tank, though a bit smaller, and takes up space in the trunk.

The gasoline tank remains... it is never replaced.

If you run out of CNG on the road, you press a switch and the car starts on gasoline.

What's the going rate for NorthGuy-powered vehicles?

Haven't priced one out but they get about 2 mpb.

Miles per burrito.

You can get more mileage if you add a generous portion of black or pinto beans to that burrito.

Not sure the gaskets could handle that added pressure.

I drove an LNG pickup at work. It was a dog. And.... the tank was real small.
