Will children go to Hell for celebrating Halloween, the Devil's Birthday? Here are some ways that can help you transform Halloween night from a dangerous, damnationary orgy of pagan ignorance into an evening of enlightened, God's own victory Bible based evangelism.

Most religious people I know are down to earth folks who don't try to convert me or be all preachy.

Are the religious more radical where you are from, Doc?

Happy Halloween to all the Drudge Retort trolls, goblins, zombies, and witches!

At a glance, I can only conclude that this website _has_ to be a joke.

Prag ya think :)

Landover Baptist is to Christians what Onion is to news.

This is just part of the Christian War on Halloween.

halowen is the devel!
Halowen maks Jebus kry!

Well, Tao, I didn't have time (and don't this weekend, Halloween being only one reason; end of the academic quarter being another : ) ), but yeah, pretty clear. It seemed funny.

Yeah prag landover is fun but only in small doeses where as I can read the Onion for hours. I think it's because Landover has all the comedy on one subject while the Onion makes fun of everyone.

I do like reading all the people who get offended here at a joke site.

People are just funny. I've got a ton of time because I am trying to take it easy so I will have the energy to join the wife and kids doing the T&T thing. If I work to hard my legs won't be up to it. It's funny how MS changes life and priorities. A few years ago I would spend the day fixing up the house and still go out with the kids now if I do much more than lie on the couch I'll have to miss out for the second year. On the plus side at least there is hockey on right now to pass the time. On the down side the canes are getting smacked like red headed step children by the flyers.

Go ahead and make Christian snide remarks regarding Halloween.

Humane societies won't allow any adoption of black cats during this time of year due to the number of satanic rituals soaring.

Celebrate it if you want to, I choose not.

This has to be one of the strangest posts I've read here in a while...lol

Mine is???

Pfft...I've posted MUCH stranger ones than that.

"Go ahead and make Christian snide remarks regarding Halloween."

I didn't. Tao didn't. But others might have.

So Lisa, what is the reason for not celebrating Halloween? Yours, I mean. Or if you can speak for larger groups?

Is it like the anti Harry Potter sentiment? (Which I don't get either.) I have heard the bit about black cats, though, and I've also heard about dalmatians and the Disney movie.

How do you feel about Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

I wouldn't say we "celebrate" Halloween--what a weird word, eh?--but my kids had a ball. We went out into the neighborhood with another couple and their kids, in what eventually became pouring rain. My little superheroes had a great time, and I enjoyed myself too. Other than the fact that we came back to find our big-ass bowl of candy completely gone. I have an inkling that the "Please be respectful; take only two pieces" sign was not observed. (No, I didn't really think it would be. We wanted to go out and do the dual-family door-to-door.

Prag:

We don't celebrate it in my house because we feel it is a night that doesn't belong to Christians. It belongs to something else.

So many more satanic rituals are performed on this night.

Gotta wonder.

We don't watch shows like Buffy. Then again, we don't watch a whole lot of tv anyway.

I'm glad you had fun.

Prag...we have decorations out front of our home but it's all harvest stuff.

Bales of hay, some signs, gourds, uncarved punkins.

A scarecrow hangs on our door holding a sign that says

Thanksgiving Blessings.

No halloween stuff.

Landover Baptist is the shit.

"Thanksgiving Blessings. "

Nice sentiment, but you're a month early. Either ignore or "get in the spirit". Don't desecrate others holidays, thank you very much.

I did ignore, Letus...until I was asked a specific question.

And it's harvest time...I'm not a bit too early!

"Don't desecrate others holidays,"

But I'll remember you said that when a Christian holiday is at hand.

Good. You keep track.

LOL...Well, I don't need your permission, but thank you!!!

I can't think of any exclusively "Christians" holidays.. they are all originally Pagan!:] Halloween is a variation on the Samhain harvest festival, marking the new Celtic year, the end of summer's prodution. The night feast may have translated into feeding children candy at night, the undead element may be from the feast commemorating those who've passed on. Nothing abusive about it, other than the corporatization by Hershey's.

Betty Bowers and Landover Baptists are seriously hilarious. Thank you Doctor S.

Lisa - it's a holiday for the kids, like they've all become. At least, that's the way I choose to celebrate it. Last year we had 0 kids and 4 bags of candy. This year 2 bags and about 40 kids. The little ones are especially cute - and it's a dress-up time for them. Needless to say, we're out of candy = awesome!

Landover Baptist is the shit.

It sure is, in the original sense of this word! Sometimes LB is pretty funny but this one is so-so. Especially that burning-cross thing, which jumps the shark and drags it all down a few notches.

That said, I think it's just a good excuse for kids to get candy. I sure enjoyed the heck out of that when I was a kid.

PS: The Scriptures don't mention that Jesus smelled rotten when He appeared to the flock after His resurrection.

"So many more satanic rituals are performed on this night.

I don't wonder at people taking advantage of popular mythos and imagery to do whatever weird things it is they do. Seems human nature to me. I've never heard of or encountered a Satanic ritual anywhere near where I've ever lived. Doesn't mean they haven't happened, but it does mean I have no frame of reference and can't know whether there are more on this day than on any other.

"We don't watch shows like Buffy. Then again, we don't watch a whole lot of tv anyway."

All right. When you do watch TV, what do you watch? (Do you know anything about Buffy? It's a _very_ clever show, and she fights vampires, demons, and other evil creatures. At the same time, none of the characters are overtly Christian, and one of her allies is a very powerful witch. The show also depicts homosexuality as acceptable--I don't know where you are on that.) Or maybe you don't want to get into this. : ) Which I can respect.

I'll watch lots of things. But generally speaking, I find Hannah Montana more offensive than, say, South Park.

Having an 8 yr old daughter I understand the sentiment but on a moralistic note really? Besides the fact that miley cyrus is a horrible role model for kids. I do try and make sure the kids realize that no one in TV or movies is a role model, so that part doesn't bother me.

WOW! A parent who watches the kids shows with them! I offer you two green stars and a gingerbread scratch'n'sniff (plus a cranberry daiquiri)!

Speaking of Buffy & co - how do you feel about the Twilight stuff? I haven't seen the film (it's a film, right?) and the Fred Meyers advertisements have these kids dressed in entirely drab, dark jeans and tees. One of the pieces of "jewelry" is a dog-tag - no joke. It's huge now, so I'm guessing the vampire romance never really dies, but in terms of girls fashion it's taken a less feminine form.

Ugh Twilight.

My older daughter has read all the books and seen the first movie. We made fun of the movie cause of the bad acting and I make fun of the book because of bad dialog but I don't think you were asking for a critical review. :)

Personaly I was into vampires as a teen so no big there the whole emo/goth thing kinda started with vampire mythos so I can see where that comes from in the movies clothes etc. My daughter is not really into the emo/goth scene thank goodness. For the most part I see it as kids expressing themselves but there are always a few that take it too far, just like the idiots when I was a kid who took D&D too far.

The only thing I perhaps took too far was in constructing a module I detailed the maps with tectonic plates and weather patterns. The animals would stampede, dragons might beach, tiny roseblood birds might flock and prick, ferocious coincidental and wonderful symmetry. I love the idea of keeping track of that kind of chaos, so it's really just superfluous crap to confuse any real DM. So, no I have no idea what you mean.[jitters quietly]

The Twilight fashion is really neutering - the opposite of most of what I see as commonly marketed Britneyesque feminizing. The girls dress like drabs-colored dudes but have prettier hair. So, as for expression it sure is an excellent example of a new range sexual and personality identity options. I wonder if Twilight has the obligatory monochrome member?
