The French idea of right and wrong seems largely wrapped up in where the accused originated. If Scientology were founded in France, they would probably leave it alone. And if Roman Polanski were born in Chicago they wouldn't be so outraged that the child rapist is going to jail.

Other then organized religions, there are all kinds of secular religions where people elevate other things, ideologies, beliefs as their gods-- capitalists, socialists, leftists, rightists, hardcore republicans and democrats, money, power, and a list of many others. Anytime something becomes a priority that causes an imbalance in one's life you might call it a religion. And some of the above try to take over governments.

Unlike the US, France has always refused to recognise Scientology as a religion, arguing that it is a purely commercial operation designed to make as much money as it can at the expense of often vulnerable victims
