Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The number of steps an Orthodox Jew has to take to rest on the Sabbath has just been increased... by however many floors they need to climb or descend. To observe halacha, Jewish religious law, the truly observant must do nothing that even resembles work. Even pushing a button on an elevator is forbidden because it starts an electric motor and the use of electricity constitutes work. In Israel, this has been gotten around for many by the installation of special "Sabbath elevators" that stop on every floor automatically. Even this has been controversial because it can be argued that the increase in weight when a person steps in an elevator causes more electricity to be used. Now, a decision has been made. No elevators even if you live in a high rise.

This is t totally kewl. Me likes it.

Oy vey! This is crazy!

This Rabbi felt there was a serious decrease in Jewish complaining and that this would really help improve the ratio of Jews to Complaints.

I think it is funny when women get butterflies at the base of their backs. In 20 years, it will look like a moth.

You know Jewish folks should have nonjewish servants during these periods of time. Think about it. The Nonjewish person does all the work even pushes the elevator button while pushing the jewish person in a wheel chair(Doesn't matter if they are crippled or not we can imagine they are crippled for this period of time). Then the Jewish person can keep kosher and everybody wins. Problem solved.

Maybe they shouldn't get out of bed already?

You know Jewish folks should have nonjewish servants during these periods of time.

They do and have for centuries. They are called "Shabot Goys" and they drive to Temple, cook meals, and any other thing that needs to be done on the Sabbath that an observant Jew cannot.

A great many do not agree with this. For example, a Rabbi once told me that "electricity flows through a light whether it is illuminated or not. It is not like lighting a match, a lamp is always technincally on, so turning a switch is not the same as lighting a match." I personally don't agree. I knew another Rabbi who kept three TVs on during the Sabbath in different rooms so he could still watch college football without having to touch the TV; he would just go from room to room.

Is flushing the toilet also considered work?

Now that's fucking neato. I like that.

This Rabbi, if you read the story, took it too far. He says that the elevator must work harder to carry the additional weight of the Jew on the Sabbath and that violates the Sabbath. There is debate among different sects of Jews as to whether it is the individual who is not allowed to work on the Sabbath, or if all work is to be avoided. For example, some really religious feel the "Shabot Goy" is a sin because you are forcing another to work and therefore are supervising at the least.

oh dear what to do. sighhhhhhhhhhhhhh

oh dear what to do.

Do what I do: trust that a G-d powerful enough to create life is powerful enough to instill in that life the truth and that you don't need anyone else to provide G-d's will to you. Anything man says is said by G-d is said my a deluded man.

.....just goes to show Muslims don't have the only stupid religion........

...he would just go from room to room.

Which just shows you how absurd religions can be.

This has to be a form of insanity.

Like a phobia. They are apparently afraid of making sense. Have you seen any of the contraptions they have designed to get around this Jewish Law? The stuff looks like a Rube Goldberg contraption or even Steamwonkish. They even have a kosher cell phone now.

Certainly it takes more "work" to get up from the couch and go to another room than to push one tiny button on the remote control.

Which just shows you how absurd religions can be.

I saw a show once that described the extremes one baker went to to ensure his bread was unleavened. (I think there is a Jewish holiday on which you can't eat leavened bread or you go straight to hell). You would think it would be enough to leave the yeast out of the dough, but noooooo. They meticulously washed their hands lest a yeast spore snuck in under a fingernail. Likewise they donned bunny suits like a semiconductor factory. The triple filtered the ventilation so air-borne yeasts could not get mixed into the doughs.

It was absurd and does indeed point out the insanity of religions. And I find it hard to believe that when a Jew is standing at the Pearly gates that he will be told to make a U-turn because he ingeested a yeast spore or ate a cheeseburger or had a shrimp cocktail.

"The Sabbath is man for man, not man for the Sabbath...."

-Obscure philosopher

Whups---"The Sabbath is for man, not man for the Sabbath". Long day so far.

Hey another question for You Kanrei. What about toilets on the sabbath day can they be flushed or is that too performing work??? Technically You ARE performing work cause You are cleaning the toilet of all bodily wastes. What do You do skip flushing for one day or what. Speaking about flushing it's too bad RCADE doesn't add a toilet icon to Your posted by such and such for each dump. 1 toilet equals one dump 2 toilets 2 dumps. Oh and if You reach 3 dumps in a 21 day period and You try and make a post a huge toilet pops up with Your name on a piece of toilet paper floating on the water in the toilet bowl with date of returnment on it. Be kinda kewl if You ask Me.

The Sabbath thing was settled by God Himself, who stated in essence, don't sweat the small stuff.

This simple idea can be expanded upon, such that one can understand you don't go to Hell for merely consuming yeast spores.

It can also be expanded upon to understand that, whenever secular or sacred seem to get silly, they probably aren't doing God's will.

"The Sabbath thing was settled by God Himself, who stated in essence, don't sweat the small stuff. "

So, just disregard Commandment #4? Okey dokey.

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it."

"Just disregard Commandment #4..."

We can safely assume Jesus wouldn't do that. He did have a lot to say concerning the Sabbath, however, which was a hot topic in 1st Century Judea.

I recommend you read His commentaries in this regard. I'm sure they'll seem as reasonable and as humanistic to you as they seem to me.

Christ would have been amused, disgusted, or both in regards to this elevator thing. Just as you are. So, the two of you have something in common.
