After announcing that it would be the sole sponsor of Fox's upcoming Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show, Microsoft has pulled out after seeing a taping of the special last week, which includes racy jokes about deaf people, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene and incest.

Dude, this show looks horrid. Seth McFarlane is squeezing every last drop from his Family Guy fame, a show which is funny, but American Dad, The Cleveland Show, and this trite crap (I'm assuming) is just too much. One of the commercials with Renee Zellweger immediately gives me the impression that they are ripping of Tim and Eric, a show that is colossally unfunny.

Oh and Microsoft is dumb, agreed.

Microsoft doesn't have time for this shit. They are too busy polishing that new turd Windows 7.

I'm getting a Dell Inspiron tomorrow pre-installed with Windows 7. Wish me luck.

Hey HAG if you're so inclined start a blog about windows 7, I would like to hear your take on it after messing around with it for a while.

Good luck

"Microsoft Clueless"

REALLY???? Who would ever have guessed that?

DUHHH!!!

Good luck

Thanks. Will keep you posted.

I sometimes laugh my ass off at Family Guy and other times I think it just goes over the top in its insatiable need to offend. For some reason I never (well, ok, rarely) feel that way about South Park, which hits its satirical marks more effectively.

7 upgrade cripples Vista machines:

Anyone else see the devastating ad that Apple is running on Windows 7?

Holy crap, me too -

well maybe not tomorrow, but it should arrive in the next week or so.

I got the standard included Athlon II processor with a speed of 2.7 Ghz and I wonder if this processor is shit and I should have upgraded ????

anywhoo its got 3 gigs dual channel RAM and a 320 gig hard drive so I think I am pretty good there.

$421.00

I just got my wife a laptop with Vista.

no complaints , but then again, she is not really a stern critic of PC OSs.

"This is not surprising. "

Yep, you have to be politically correct if you want career advancement in corporate America.

Anyone remeber the episode of Family guy with this bit of dialog:

Mr Pewtershmit: Hey Bill(gates) could you help me progrma this ZUNE I got for Chistmas.

BIll: Sure thing!

Mr. P: Oh wait I have a iPOD like every one else on the planet!

Bill: you son of a bitch!

Hey Hagbard. You need more luck because of the DELL than because of Windows.

You certainly cannot blame Apple for commercials like the one above, when Gates stole everything that has become MSoft from them.

I have to completely agree. Often times I will react with a blank stare at some of the jokes they try to pull off. Some stuff just isn't funny no matter how far overboard you go with it.

They are ants, Michael. They ARE ants!

Lemme get this straight Apple clobbers winDOZE in a series of ads that make Mac guy seem more hip, with it, relevant etc while making PC guy looks pedantic, stuffy and more than slightly out of touch and now Microsoft fires back by pussying out of sponsoring a Family Guy episode?

Wow.

Like a textbook study in "Yer Doing It Wrong"

GigaFAIL.

Be Well.

I'm getting a Dell Inspiron tomorrow pre-installed with Windows 7. Wish me luck.

Microsoft almost never fucks up pre-installed computers. It's the upgrades that cause you trouble.

I loved Family Guy before it got canceled, but it lost something when it returned. I think it tries too hard to be "Family Guy" now. First three seasons are classic IMHO.

That's it. I am going to boycot Microso

The Apple commercials have been great, and despite hiring supposed wunderkinds of marketing, MS has had little luck challenging them. (See the Bill Gates- Tom Hanks ads)

Apple has bitten into some of MS's up-market, but unless they improve service and at some point contain costs, they will be all ad, no hat.

That's why I've got them on DVD.

Get high and laugh your ass off.

Me too Jerry. I made the mistake of buying the first set after they returned, but damn it was weak. I never watch those.

hmmmm. pulling out over racy jokes about deaf folks, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene and incest. it actually sounds pretty rational.

Wow, have any of you criticizing above actually used 7 yet? Not sure what the big deal is... Windows 7, I have to say, is... that word that falls right between fine and great! Amazing what MS can do when Bill gets out of the way, huh?

God for Microsoft.

Family Guy: Trash TV. Shallow humor for shallow minds.

Correction: Good for Microsoft.

G-d prefers Apples.

The point of the story is that Microsoft was all hyped about being the "sole sponser" of the Seth MacFarlane special....until they actually watched a couple episodes of Family Guy. In other words, they're stupid.

Sounds a lot like the practices of most politicians... support a cause, sign a bill, etc. w/o reading or knowing what it's all about. "Here's some charts with lines on 'em... you can easily see why we need your support" shit.

But you don't watch it.

I am in the process of putting together the following system:

- Intel Core i7-860 2.8Ghz 8M LGA1156 CPU

- EVGA P55 FTW Intel P55 Socket LGA1156 Motherboard

- Corsair 4GB DDR3 PC12800 1600MHz (2x2GB) Class 9

- HITACHI 1TB SERIAL ATA HD 7200/16MB/SATA-3G

- Ultra LSP750 750w Power Supply

- XFX GeForce GTS 250 1GB DDR3 Core Edition w/COD4

- Ultra M923 Full Tower ATX Case

I also bought the following:

- HP CQ60-420US PDC T4200 2.0/3/250/DVDRW/VHP 15.6

...and here pretty quick I will be buying another three HDs with 4.5 TB of space (for a total of 5.5 TBs), and a friend is kicking in a neat keyboard and cd/DVD readerr/burner. :)

As to the Family Guy dust-up, the show has been hit or miss recently. I like how they poke fun at everything, Right or Left, conservative or liberal ... and the fact that Microsnot threw a fit and ran out of the room so to speak, on the one hand says that Microsnot can't handle "cutting edge" comedy (emphasis on the "cutting"), while at the same time, it shows that Family Guy is getting a bit further from the mainstream ... possibly a mistake for them.

John B.

Microsoft will be looking for a new Ad Agency soon.

Family guy is funny. In fact, it can be hilarious on nights. But it's also pretty much what it's detractors say about it.

Can you really blame MS?
Family Guy has been going down hill for at least the last 2-3 years. I gave up on it last season. Between the same bad jokes again & again, & the liberal crap he spews, enough was enough. Last thing that show had that was any good was "Blue Harvest". But, that could just be the Star Wars geek in me.

Well, a lot of you don't get Bill Hicks jokes so I can see why Family Guy is a little over your heads. Every word is a referrence.

I know. You don't get it. That's why there is 2 1/2 men for you to watch.

^.^

Oh, I forgot, I also bought a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate ... gotta have a spiffy OS to go in this new system.

If I were Microsnot, I would keep my commercials on the show. Yes, hold yer damn noses and be on a show that a BUNCH of young people who are of the computer-buying type will be watching. The idea of putting yourself in front of those people and possibly selling rather expensive stuff to them should over-ride any qualms to the show content.

LOL!

If Mac ever gets more than a piddly little share of the market, and it becomes worth while to write malicious code for Macs, it'll be good fun watching their systems crumble under the weight of all the viruses and exploits, and to see their owners' pointed heads explode.

#38 | Posted by LIVE_OR_DIE

Those guys at CA can write some nasty stuff.

Many - I get the references but there is nothing clever about trying to make obscure reference after obscure reference.

Any given Family Guy episode:

Peter: I want to go try _____
Brian: Like you time in that you (played lazer tag with Gary Coleman, went Yachting with Coldplay, hell it could be anything)?

Insert clip of Peter doing something "totally unexpected"

With writing like that, Family Guy can be run for eternity without running out of jokes.

My bro-in-law is a certified ethical hacker. Does real instrusion detection (i.e., doesn't just run some program that spits out a report). Some of the shit they think of just blows me away, and is mostly over my head.

#40 | Posted by andyuhenet

Well you are close. It's really just a stand up routine set to pictures. I really enjoy stand-up. I really enjoy Family Guy.

But if you think it is just some cookie cutter template filled in like an Ad-Lib then no, no you don't get it. That's ok. They reference a lot of obscure shit.

" there is nothing clever about trying to make obscure reference after obscure reference."

Please tell that to Dennis Miller!

^.^

Yeah really! The reason Macs don't have viruses is that hardly anyone outside of kindergarten classes uses them ... at least their systems have improved over the years, but yeah, you'll only get malicious BS on systems that a lot of people use.

John B.
www.politicscity.com

No one outside of Kindergarten uses them:
Flag: The world hasn't changed since I was a teenager

Ever walk through the office of any recent Start-Up? Didn't think so, I've worked at a couple recently...both were exclusively Mac with a mix of linux for the ops guys, and their services were being built on Amazons Compute Cloud.

But you're right everyone outside of grade school uses PC's exclusively..yup

RCade, do you have any links to market share of the major OS systems?

The only one I found was one put together by a Web company trying to figure out which browser and OS most people are using.

Anyone else see the devastating ad that Apple is running on Windows 7?

#9 | Posted by rcade

RCade, please. Tell me how this is devastating?

I've used Mac and Windows. Have you ever used Windows?

I prefer Windows because of the development tools, the large user base, etc. It's a great client machine. I wouldn't put the server technology up against Linux, but for small business? Windows can't be beat. Not by a long shot.

I found another OS Market Share site:
marketshare.hitslink.com

Looks like MAC as gains 2.1% of market share since 2006. Mac currently has 5.12% of the world market share for OS's which makes a 2.1% growth a phenomenal jump in Revenue for Apple!

However, with Windows still maintaining 92.77% and the numbers of total installs (and users) actually growing every year...

How is this devastating?

In order for MAC to take over, it will need to be free and open architecture... Will that ever happen?

Even if it were free, would it take over? Why did Linux lag?

Have you ever used Windows?

I use Windows. It's a bloated and buggy mess.

Market share has nothing to do with whether the ad is devastating or not. Apple's ad is correct. Microsoft markets every version of Windows by saying it sucks less than the last one.

Macs/Mac OS are/is like that small eclectic restaurant down the street. Food is excellent, different, prepared in a non-traditional manner, a bit on the small side for portions. Very well presented. Very tasty. Very expensive. The place is mostly patronized by food (cyber) snobs with higher funding profiles who turn their snoots up at mainstream fare and freely denigrate the "down-ware" the rest of the world uses.

Windows rules the world, with a big helping hand from its buddy Unix in the background. Mac is niche-ware.

Damn shame that Silly Gs have been in dire straits lately.

"Market share has nothing to do with whether the ad is devastating or not. Apple's ad is correct. Microsoft markets every version of Windows by saying it sucks less than the last one."

Actually, market share is kinda important, because if Mac is only talking to the people who like whatever computer they have, Mac or PC, or they are talking to the rest of the 2% of the market share they have, they aren't going to make headway on the 97+% that Microsoft dominates.

They can tread water if they want.

LOL

If your Windows is buggy you're doing something wrong, and probably shouldn't be allowed near a computer.

I'm going Linux OS next time I need a new PC or OS.

Family Guy reaches new deepths in comedy that a quality show would never have to go to for ratings. Anybody over the age of 12 that can watch this cartoon and think its so funny also thinks shows like simpsons, bevuis and butt head and the other one I cant think of but is always talking about poop, and farting as the main theme. Good comedy dosent always have to be tasteless and vulgar to be good. See Lucille Ball, Red Skelton, Jack Benny, or Carol Burnett for funny with out being obscene.

This is old but still really fucking funny.

Well, ok. You are quite passionate about it. I can tell because you are using the Apple ad to prove your point.

However, I don't see why the passion against Windows...

Three things you never discuss at a dinner party - religion, politics, and what computer you use.

If your Windows is buggy you're doing something wrong, and probably shouldn't be allowed near a computer.

You're kidding, right? Do you have any idea how many patches Microsoft sends for each Windows release, or how easy it has been to compromise Windows boxes with spams and malware over the years?

However, I don't see why the passion against Windows...

I am not an Apple user. I use Windows because I bought a lot of Windows software over the years and it's never been worth it to switch. I am not a zealot about this. I just thought the ad was a nice smackdown.

You know RCade? I really never gave it much thought. Windows is pretty crappy when it comes to fixing things.

Most of the vulnerabilities in Windows are from the added software that is typically slammed into service from either Microsoft or a 3rd party. Microsoft could clean it up a lot better, but why would they? They own the market.

MAC made a smart move by changing their OS to Unix. That move made it more secure and more robust. It far better than the OS/2 (operating system divided by 2) technology that Microsoft switched to.

But, I will continue with Microsoft because that's what I do and have been for 25 years. I'll probably do it for another 25.

I am not an Apple user. I use Windows because I bought a lot of Windows software over the years and it's never been worth it to switch. I am not a zealot about this. I just thought the ad was a nice smackdown.

#63 | Posted by rcade

But, RCade, it's not worth it to switch to it. Even though Mac is a growing market, there is not near the number of users for Windows. However, if someone came to me and said that they needed an application to run on Mac and would allow me to get up to speed with the development tools; I would probably do it out of curiosity.

You're kidding, right? Do you have any idea how many patches Microsoft sends for each Windows release, or how easy it has been to compromise Windows boxes with spams and malware over the years?

Windows isn't necessarily easier to crack than other OSes, it's just more popular.

A few good practices and properly assembled hardware, and Windows works just fine.

^.^

"See Lucille Ball, Red Skelton, Jack Benny, or Carol Burnett for funny with out being obscene."

Yeah, except that those comedians were out of the 70s or so...

Starting with the Simpsons, the comedy genre has gone slowly but surely downhill.

John B.
www.politicscity.com

Windows isn't necessarily easier to crack than other OSes, it's just more popular.

Windows is much easier to crack or crash than Linux.

These days, I don't care much about the OS as long as it can run a browser and Java, MySQL and PHP.

I have been using Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit since last March. I get a new bleeding-edge-of-technology when I upgrade, which is about every three or four years. The reason I am most happy with Windows is that it patches itself and upgrades itself behind my back, while I am sleeping. I have come to think of the changes as having a homeless guy come in and helping himself to something from my refrigerator.

I use whatever computer I own at the moment as an appliance, like a washing machine or a microwave oven.

I have one friend who uses a Mac, and he is vehemently proud of it. I sometimes point out to him that the only other place I see Macs is as product placements in movies and on TV. Then he starts to get upset. I only do this when he has pissed me off, and I feel like lashing him a bit.

Mostly I don't care, and wish Mac supporters whatever comfort they can derive from their choice of computer and OS.

If Mac ever gets more than a piddly little share of the market, and it becomes worth while to write malicious code for Macs, it'll be good fun watching their systems crumble under the weight of all the viruses and exploits, and to see their owners' pointed heads explode.

Mac are running Unix hidden behind a nice graphical user interface.
There are several times more developers working on unix/linux than on windows. The code is open and the quality is several levels higher.
May be THAT is the reason that Mac user do not have those troubles.

I sometimes point out to him that the only other place I see Macs is as product placements in movies and on TV

Last quarter Apple sold more than 3 million Macs and more than 17 million iPhones/iPods.

Mac are running Unix hidden behind a nice graphical user interface.

#70 | Posted by fribo

A lot of Windows boxes out there are merely the front end/user interface for UNIX servers.

"There are several times more developers working on unix/linux than on windows. The code is open and the quality is several levels higher."

Linux is open source. UNIX is proprietary.

Explain what you mean by the quality is several levels higher.

I attempted to run Linux on my home system, specifically Ubuntu 9. Had it running. But I had lots of problems with it, though mainly because of hardware/graphics incompatibilities. I could have downloaded a shit load of drivers/patches to bring it up to snuff. Gave it up. Wasn't worth it. Linux is not mainstream, still in the world of geekware.

UNIX is a different beast all together. It is not built for the home user. That is why there is Windows.

I have very few problems with my XP set up. But I also maintain it assiduously, download the various Windows patches/upgrades, and keep my security suite updated.

My XP system at work is a rock.

If Windows was truly shitware, then it would not be on 85% of the machines worldwide.

Linux is open source. UNIX is proprietary.

Ever heard of FreeBSD? Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD.

UNIX is a different beast all together. It is not built for the home user. That is why there is Windows.

LOL. That is why there is Mac OS X. Unix is running on Macs and the user does not even know it.

"Unix is running on Macs and the user does not even know it."

yes we do.
