PoliticsDaily: Between 1951 and 1962, the Atomic Energy Commission detonated more than 100 nuclear bombs in the atmosphere over its Nevada Test Site, just 65 miles from Las Vegas. The radioactive fallout menaced not only the ranchers and the miners unlucky enough to live in that remote area of southern Nevada, but -- as a new study unveiled Tuesday demonstrated -- untold millions of unsuspecting Americans as well. Epidemiologist Joseph Mangano analyzed the lingering radiation in infant teeth (donated long ago by the parents of baby boys born in the St. Louis area between 1959 and 1961) and compared the results to contemporary cancer data from the subjects. "What we found out was shocking," Mangano said.

No sooprise here.
Muthafucka bastards who experimented on humans.

Aha... this explains why so many in DR have fried brains. LOL

The Livermore Labs at Berkeley, where they were first toying with that new element called "Plutonium," is a severely restricted building since they were flushing the stuff down the toilet and such. Hardly any part of the original building is open anymore.
Which begs the question the conspiracy nuts can not face: If these nuclear scientists knew the consequences of atomic tests why did they subject themselves to them?
Articles like the one linked make me laugh. They simply did not know what what going to happen. That is why they conducted experiments in the first place. Obviously, they were so psychopathic they killed others and themselves? Huh?
....really....science KNOWS the truth....religion is only a myth...science knows the truth....religion is a myth...science knows the truth....

They were going to get a DNA transplant on the mothership, of course.

Diablo, are you on a mission to prove your stupidity at every opportunity?

The hazards of radiation and fallout were known since the Trinity test. In some cases, the scientists working on the bombs were among the most vocal proponents of ending the tests precisely because they knew the hazards more than anyone else. The scientists at Livermore, Oak Ridge, and Los Alamos did indeed have accidents, but these individuals were rarely the ones in harm's way during nuclear tests.

In 1954 the US tested an H-bomb in the Marshal Islands. It was a dirty design to be detonated in a ground burst (which maximizes fallout production). The yield was greater than expected and wind patterns changed, contaminating nearby islands and poisoning their inhabitants. The partial test ban treaty was ratified by congress in 1963 but had been in the works since the late '50's. Radiation hazards had a lot to do with it - there was considerable backlash against atmospheric testing after the poisoning of the Marshall Islanders.

The danger to the islanders was known, but it was not until decades later that the extent of the damage became clear. The same applies to the rest of us. The government knew that fallout from nuclear tests spread across the country, but they could not have known at the time what the effects would be. High doses of radiation cause acute radiation poisoning, but the cancer and birth defects caused by lower doses may not become apparent for decades. For that reason, it's only now that the toll of nuclear testing is becoming apparent in studies.

Cold War Nuke Tests Endangered Millions and Comminusim has killed many millions!!! Take your pick.

...and that's a valid correlation how?

You can't be that stupid com!!!!

^.^

In fact, the Soviet tests were a lot more messy, and did a lot more pollution ... from inferior nuclear reactor designs that resulted in Chernobyl, to an entire major city in the Ural mountains being irradiated by above-ground nuclear testing specifically designed to see how the civil population would react and adapt...

Quite frankly, when faced by a nation that was quite willing to use nuclear weapons to destroy us, I'll take the Cold War tests.

Edward Teller - great example of the right wing war pigs taking control of the weapons of mass destruction.

Oppenheimer was a national hero for what he accomplished in developing the nuke bomb. But he was pushed aside by those like Teller for being politically incorrect, in this case too left leaning.

Not surprised to hear there were many nuclear scientists at the time concerned about fallout but they were scoffed at an ignored by Teller.

I suggest you make a visit your local chemo ward. Tell all the folks there how lucky they are to have cancer and not be dirty red commies.

^.^

Hmm, I'd be willing to wager that the number of people who have cancer from smoking is a HELL OF A LOT more than the number of people who have cancer from Cold War-era nuclear tests.

Let's be a bit real here ... people have lived around nuclear testing, and not much has happened ... Hell, people in Las Vegas used to go to the rooftops to watch the explosions.

Some people are just trying to make a big deal out of something and scare people with it ... it's a fake threat, I'm not getting cancer from anything.

Good for you.

I'm sure you'll understand if I take the word of an epidemiologist over the uninformed opinion of some right-winger who hawks his empty blog in every post.

But if you do get cancer, will you opt out of Medicare so I don't have to pay for your treatment? It is, after all, a small price (for you) to pay for not being a commie.

"Quite frankly, when faced by a nation that was quite willing to use nuclear weapons to destroy us, I'll take the Cold War tests."

The day that MAD occurred, no more tests should ever have been conducted by either side. I can understand the need to be able to pose a threat large enough so as to make an attack unfeasible, but beyond that it was just crazy and inhuman.
I should do some research, just wonder what the right was saying when Kennedy did negotiate the nuclear test ban treaty???

That has to be one of the most intelegent statements you have ever made. After I post that, the libs are going to hate you like they do me.
