Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Friday, October 23, 2009

A Northwest Airlines jet failed to make radio contact with ground controllers for more than an hour Wednesday night and overflew its Minneapolis destination by 150 miles before turning around. Federal officials are investigating whether pilot fatigue was a factor.

the crew told authorities they became distracted during a heated discussion

Earlier news... "Drudge Retort members get pilot license!"

I filed Northworst once. That was enough. Will never fly that POS airline again....ever.

Southwest is the only way to fly.

heated discussion over airline policy

Probably about them making 18.25 per hour and only getting 29.5 hours per week.

Southwest is the only way to fly.

Or Jet Blue.

Airtran rocks, we do the Business Class upgrade online, usually 1-2 days before the flight. $69 dollars PP and it's just like First Class.

Hell I'd of been delighted with overshooting the airport 150 Miles. Think about it 300 extra miles that You didn't have to pay for. Just think of a roller coaster ride going longer than scheduled. More Ride for the buck.

Larry

Southwest is the only way to fly.

I'll second that 726. I have had the best experience with them.

they leave on time, more pleasant personnel, price is right etc....

"Just think of a roller coaster ride going longer than scheduled. More Ride for the buck."

Larry's logic boggles the mind.

Besides, what's the big deal? Who here hasn't missed an exit off the interstate at least once?

Are they baking chiocolate chip cookies on the flight? They do in Milwaukee.

Dave Dave Dave think about it. You get to fly longer enjoying the scenery longer and You didn't have to pay extra for the ride. I call that a win win deal.

Larry

Or Jet Blue.

Flying them in November for the first time. I have heard nothing but good things.

Who here hasn't missed an exit off the interstate at least once?

How many times have you driven the interstate asleep?

I am not buying the whole "we were having a heated discussion and missed the airport" arguement.

Even if true, why would I put my life in the hands of two pilots who get into an arguement and forget to land the fucking plane?

Northworst Airlines!

Hey wasn't Jet Blue the airplane company who went into that swamp in Florida??

Think about it 300 extra miles that You didn't have to pay for

I don't think they got an extra 300 frequent flier miles from that Larry.

Maybe a coupon to use for a $7 McGriddle at that airport McD's.

I think that was Value Jet.

Oh Yeah Thanks

Larry, your description of the ride would be appropraite to a hot air baloo ride.

For a scheduled Air Carrier, ahem...well, hell no.

You're right, Larry.

What was I thinking?

Well hell OldWhiskeySour had I of been on that flight I would have thought it great fun to fly longer than I paid for. Shit it would have been quite a blast to be sure.

Larry

Imagine the poor bastard that had to sit next to your fat creepy ass!

Southwest is a great company. They pay their employees better than other major airlines. They treat the employees like assets and not like a cancerous growth. They set low expectations for the customer and those are easy to meet.

As far as the NWA/DAL flight. No excuses!! They fell asleep.

What, were they having a wet T-shirt contest in the cockpit with the stewardesses? That might be reason enough to "overshoot the runway"

tempest in a teacup.
At 560mph 150 mile goes by pretty quick ~ 15 minutes.

yes but they would have started the descent about 20-30 minutes prior(100-130 miles) to flying over MSP. They were "out of it" at least that far before

They were obviously asleep. I can only imagine the air traffic controllers trying to establish communications with them. After 911, they are lucky the Air Force didn't shoot them down. It's a good thing they were flying over Minnesota and not the Northeast Corridor.

After 911, they are lucky the Air Force didn't shoot them down.

After 911, what makes you think the air force could even find them, much less shoot them down?

Hmmm.... A man pilot and a woman pilot having a "heated" discussion and losing "situational awareness".... Anybody want to guess what was REALLY going on in the "cock"pit?

Yes, and after the accident they changed their name to AirTran. In their defense, they did have a fire onboard, not like Eastern who put an L-1011 into the Everglades on a clear night.

those damn airports are small from up there especially if there are clouds.

If they can fly a small hollow tube 500 miles an hour, 7 miles up in the air, half way across the country, and find Minneapolis in the dark, why the hell can't they find my bag.

I think that was Value Jet.

Some "Value" THAT Flight was!

did Falcon Heene have to use his air miles??..I think not!

Nice to see Dubya back in the cockpit.

We know it wasn't McCain because it actually landed.

LMBO

You're crackin' me up Northguy!!

LOL

"Some "Value" THAT Flight was!"

If they simply advertised it as an up close safari in the bellies of the crocodiles living in the florida everglades they woulda had somethin'

Yes, and after the accident they changed their name to AirTran.

Fuck up big enough to have to change names. Nice.

Only flew AirTran once.... it was not great.

"Only flew AirTran once.... it was not great."

AirTran is way better than TranAir, though i hear the stewards look great in high heels...

There's a parallel here to the administration's projected landing on budget for health care.

The federal government missing it's airports is pretty commonplace.

The federal government missing it's airports is pretty commonplace.

National security on 9-11, the economy, Iraq, afghanstan, dead or alive.

You got that one right, Hopeless

TWA landed at the Craig Colorado airport in 2001 while trying to fly to the Hayden Airport.

It will be interesting to see what the CVR has to say if was recorded long enough...

In the early 1980's, I took a flight on New Year's Eve to Texas. The stewardess was so f-up she got the oxygen mask stuck over her ear during the safety demonstration and started laughing like a hyena. The pilot gave a rambling and incoherent greeting over the PA. Then they overshot Love Field and had to turn back to land. Yes, I was scared.
But at the same time, I am most grateful to have been more high than any of the crew at the time.
That said, I agree with deregulating most drugs but also insist pilots, train engineers, truck drivers and similar workers must be clean beyond a reasonable doubt.

A lot of chopper pilots are flying around drunk.

Link is just the transcript, but when the woman screams "Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire!" it's the scariest thing I've ever heard.
