I wonder if being a WW II combat veteran had somehow changed him and set off the violence or if he had always been a psycho but his killing urge never emerged until after the war? Or if he was depressed because he was a homosexual at a time when it was definitely not acceptable in society? He had so many psychological problems from which to choose you can just take your pick.
