Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

CHDK started two years ago and has matured to the point that if you own a Canon Powershot you really ought to check it out. The article focuses on RAW capture and the advantage over standard JPEGs in terms of light and color. But there's more, lots more in the kit, so take a look. It might even influence your next purchase if you're looking at consumer models.

But can I take pictures of UFO's in the upper UV and lower IR with it?:]

Seriously, this is a great Powershot hack that merely bypasses the downgrading of the images by the camera software.

Since it remains on your card your camera is left perfectly intact which most importantly keeps the warranty intact as well. Very nice.

i have a canon eos mk III. i got it for a birthday present last summer and i hate it. it errors out every now and then for no reason. i like my mk II better. i like to shoot things that don't move so the focus on the mk III, which seems to be geared for moving things, sucks. i always shoot in raw cr2 with the mk III. jpeg sucks, even at 20 mp.

Redlight,

There is an outfit that replaces sensors in SLRs without a hot mirror, and can go full spectrum IR to UV. But then you'd be stacking filters if you wanted to use it for normal shots.

Easier to do UV with film.

I bought a Canon S5IS a couple years ago. Great digicam for a point and shoot. Pretty good zoomage (12X), which is one of the main reasons I went with this cam, plus no proprietary batteries. No RAW on-board capability. Checked-out CHDK a few months back. RAW can be done, but the app has to be loaded on an SD card, where it will allow you to take RAW pics as long as the SD card remains in the camera: no rewrite of the on-board firmware.

Can't currently access the CHDK link provided.

Oh man this is great news, I had no idea I could tweak my Powershot.

Every time I try to bookmark the page in Firefox it crashes, Seamonkey works well though.

Zot I had the same problem the download page was blank, I banged on the mouse a few times and then the page loaded.
