The Government Printing Office and the Office of the Federal Register have announced they're making the Federal Register available for free as XML data for use by the public. The previous cost for the data, which is crucial to tracking the work of the federal government, was $17,000 a year per product.

Wow!
Is this another of Lesko's Fed givaway thingies?
17 grand for a date?
Dayam! my wife and I could have a REAL good time on that.......

Awesome! My AI will love this.:]

I'm certainly no archivist. This shit is more confusing than trying to digest raw economic data. That's just me and everyone can feel free to make fun of my intelligence for failing to make sense of this information. I don't care. It is very confusing.

This shows initial symptoms of becoming a true time-hole!

I think it's time they switched to printable digital format. People would actually be able to search for and find policy decisions relevant to the issues they're researching. Gov docs = nightmare

Wow,

That sure saved me a bunch of money on my car...um, no, actually.

Think of the jobs available as being the Scanner of the Federal Registry for an enterprise.

And now, bloggers have access to "original source" for at least three things a year.

Seriously, glad it is available for free and that there are tools coming out that let you datamine that stuff! Can't wait to make it an assignment in class next semester ;)

It is confusing but now that it is available in XML (a machine readable format) that is a lot easier to change. It can be manipulated, categorized and archived to show the progression of an agency's changes in policy. It will be much easier to digest. And because the price is right (from $17k to Free) no longer will this info be there for only the elite.

A good move on the part of the Obama administration.

A good move on the part of the Obama administration.

1Libertarian.

Agreed.

Taking the price from 17 K to Free in order to read the "newspaper of our democracy" is a pretty good bargain thinks Spud.

In the information age we live in this move, of course, makes nothing but sense and it is an important first step for Obama in terms of fullfilling his important campaign promise to increase governmental transparency.

Rolling back governmental secrecy in favour of increasing tranparency and ultimately, hopefully, accountability is a good thing.

Journey of a thousand miles yada yada yada..

Be Well.

These are the kinds of changes that can make or break America. I'm sure the right will call it wrong, but when were they ever right? Obama rules when it comes to individual rights. Go Obama go and don't let the opposition get away with anything.
