The United States is now facing a decision on how to meet its future energy needs. In the coming months, the U.S. Department of the Interior will weigh whether to allow oil and gas exploration on Alaska's Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) to be expanded. Such exploration could set the country on a clear and sustainable energy path for decades to come.

Alaska's OCS contains an estimated 27 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 130 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas. That's more than twice the amount of oil that has been produced on Alaska's North Slope since the Trans Alaska Pipeline System went online in 1977. Alaska likely has more than 30% of the nation's recoverable oil and gas. Developing these resources will advance our national interests in three significant ways.

"Alaska's OCS contains an estimated 27 billion barrels of recoverable oil"

Currently, the United States consumes 19.6 million barrels per day, of oil.

Do the Math! That's enough oil for 142 DAYS --- Not Decades!

In addition to this, oil is a Global Commodity. Just like Now, it's Unlikely that Any of That Oil will be used in the lower 48. It will go to Asia, just like all the oil pumped from Alaska does today!

"Do the Math!"

Vermin? Math? HAHAHAHAHAHA

The ME has ~750 billion barrels

All of North America, at best 209; All of the US, at best 30.

Not that it is a very big difference, but on my calculator I get that 27 billion divided by 19,600,000 equals 1,377 days, which would be 3 years and 9 months. It would be better to hold onto our oil to use for making plastic with thousands of years into the future rather than further damage Alaska's environment.

Isn't the use of oil and gas for energy by its very nature NOT "sustainable"? Who writes this crap?

No-her son Trig...

nice try Vernon, but that doesn't pass the most elementary of fact check tests.

Well, aside from the fact that your math is wrong, you (as always) miss the point.

Some fuckhead always pulls out the "only 37 days" line, as though this were some kind of argument.

There have been massive new finds in North Dakota, California and other parts of the US. Combined with conservation, nuclear power and alternative energy, The US can be energy independent.

Yes, oil is a global commodity and it makes efficiency sense to ship Alaska oil to Japan.

So your entire post is shit, as usual
