Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

David Letterman told his audience Thursday that he is the victim of an alleged extortion attempt and admitted to having sexual relations with several members of his staff, according to a press release from his production company. "This morning, I did something I've never done in my life," Letterman said. "I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury."

Seems too me like it should be between him and the band.

i suppose this is as good a place as any to get/give some advice - FOR WOMEN ONLY:

WHY MEN DON'T WRITE ADVICE COLUMNS?

"ASK MIKE"

Dear Mike,

I hope you can help me here. The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband in the house 20 watching the TV as usual. I hadn't driven more than a mile down the road when the engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help.

When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbors daughter. I am 32, my husband is 34, and the neighbor's daughter is 22. We have been married for ten years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that they had been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. He won't go to counseling and I'm afraid I can't get through to him anymore..

Can you please help?
Sincerely,

Beulah

--------

Dear Buelah:
A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors.

Sincerely,

Mike

LOL

Even more pathetic is most guys probably won't even see the humor in it and are wondering what was wrong with the answer "Mike" gave her.

It was about time Letterman FINALLY cured his gamophobia.

Took him long enough. He waited until his boy was almost six years old even though he had a relationship with the child's mother for years prior to their baby being born.

"It was about time Letterman FINALLY cured his gamophobia."

Fear of great legs?

Actually, I know it's fear of marriage.

But it looks like he's afraid of 'pins'.

If his family is so important to him, why didn't he just pay the ransom? He's got the money, it comes easy to him. Other celebs have "settled" such matters in order to keep their dirty laundry to themselves.

Letterman as a slimy philanderer is to be expected. He took too much glee making fun of people that did the same as he did, betraying and lying to the people that love them. But somehow the idea of outing himself in order to save money seems even worse. Maye you need to have Obama on again and he can give you some tips.

Dinsey-
Obama had an affair? (Or are you just full of shit?)

Extortion?

Leterman admits it on Teevee?

Did he werk into his viewer mail routine?

Be Well.

stage elft.

Even more pathetic is most guys probably won't even see the humor in it and are wondering what was wrong with the answer "Mike" gave her.

Well you got me there. I would have suspected the ignition system.

3_some!

Whats about Lettermann's long "relationship" with Schaeffer and Rupert from the Hello Deli??? Ha!

Letterman had the courage to do what anyone should do when he/she is being blackmailed. Admit everything and go to the cops and show up in court to finish it off. It's gonna save him heaps of trouble down the line whether he loses his job over it or not.

And why do women always say things like "Top ten reasons women shouldn't work for Letterman"? Does she think women don't have brains enough to decide for themselves who to sleep with? That women don't have to take responsibility for their own lives? Does she think that Letterman somehow raped these women?

is this the same guy who has been hammering other guys for years for doing the same thing?

Does she think that Letterman somehow raped these women?

no,but did he use fear and pressure over losing their jobs to get what he wanted?

Well, at least he did the right thing this time.

I hope his marriage survives.

The extortion or consentual sex?

why didn't he just pay the ransom?

Rich people stay rich by not pissing away their money. In my opinion he handled this brilliantly. He outed himself before anyone else could use the info against him, and got the guy arrested and off the street. And the best part? It didn't cost him a dime.

People in this thread and elsewhere are criticizing Dave for making jokes about other people who have been caught having affairs.

First, I've seen nowhere where these flings were "affairs" either while married or in any "exclusive" relationships. He quite likely was single and both single men and single woman have sex. That's right, they do. Celebrities probably more so.

The jokes Dave makes about things like this in others are usually more about the hypocrisy in those others and NOT the sex itself. Make no mistake about it, Dave in the future will be making fun of Dave's sex life in the future. Maybe not so much while the case is open against the perp, but he will make jokes about it.

Nice to see Dave all wee wee'd up.

What I find most shocking about this is that David Letterman has a newsworthy sex life. It was hard enough to deal with the revelation that Bob Barker was pricing models backstage.

"most guys probably won't even see the humor in it "

manhater.

Dayummmmmmmm not David Letterman too. Sighhhhhhhhh Don't anyone believe in faithfulness anymore?????? I mean can't You keep it zipped up??

Larry

"Nice to see Dave all wee wee'd up."

So how long before he makes a joke about the next rep. caught with their pants down? Didn't he rail on O'Reilly when he was being extorted by a former employee for doing the exact same thing? Of course everyone knows why it is different though.

Pricing models? Hee hee. You get a funny flag for that one, Rogers.

That asshole still picks on Newt. I hope his wife dumps him and cleans out the bank account. Bucktoothed P.O.S.

this is just what he needed for a ratings boost. media whore.

"this is just what he needed for a ratings boost. media whore."

I think I heard he beat the Tonight Show for the first time ever in the 18-49 or whatever the number one age group is.

What a loser!

This guy was going to unveil to the public that Letterman had sex with women? Only a Republican would think this is something to be ashamed of.
Remember when they outed Harold Ford as a heterosexual during a Senatorial campaign a couple of years ago?

Tonight he will announce that he is going to re-hab and because of it will get a ticker tape parade.

#30...

Care to point out where it says women in the article? Seems to me the word "staff" could be either sex. More likely it was a man or both hence the extortion.

I hope his wife takes him to the cleaners.

no,but did he use fear and pressure over losing their jobs to get what he wanted?

Please tell me how in the world you know such an intimate detail of his affairs?

Letterman is married, dummy.

So, Dave and Paul, eh?

I thought there was something funny going on there.

In most workplaces that would be grounds of immediate dismissal. Sadly entertainment and politics are exempt.

Care to point out where it says women in the article? Seems to me the word "staff" could be either sex.

In the video of his remarks to the audience, he says it was women.

That article does not say women, but numerous others do. Why would your mind even go there Crispee?

Thanks...

One of Letterman's lovers was Stephanie Birkitt, a former assistant used in some on-air bits who once said in an interview that he's "great fun to play catch with":

www.huffingtonpost.com

These two are my new Jim and Pam.

Well, well, well....

Why is it that celebrities and politicians make such public spectacles of themselves?

They have sex like guinea pigs--some may be with guinea pigs!

And it wasn't the women staffer(s) who was doing the extortion--it was some guy--a producer--who was trying to black mail him.

And the wagons are circling to protect him like they circle to protect Polanski.

(NO--they are not the same--only that they circle to protect some kind of industry they belong to).

No wonder Letterman has such a thing for Palin and her daughters..he has no respect for women--any woman--not even his wife.

And he laughs about it.

One word for Letterman--Scumbag.

I understand that Dave is the first man on record to ever drop trou with a cute co-worker...

... but not the first to get caught. Not sure how that works.

"Letterman and Lasko, who had been together since 1986, wed during a quiet courthouse civil ceremony in Choteau, Montana on March 19, 2009"

Ah, I stand corrected.

See? Six whole months!

I just don't keep up with important news like chairpoodle does.

Let me know if any of this philandering happened after March 19, 2009. Otherwise, STFU.

Yes six whole months and they have a 6 yo boy.

"Yes six whole months and they have a 6 yo boy."

Sinners!

Why is it that celebrities and politicians make such public spectacles of themselves?

Letterman didn't make a public spectacle of himself. He was blackmailed.

He must have known that this sort of thing would be more of a possibility were he to get married, but he did it anyway... perhaps for his child.

Good on Dave.

"Letterman didn't make a public spectacle of himself..."

OK how about a blatant hypocrite?

Rcade--when you are having multiple affairs with women staffers while married with a child--you are a recipe for a 'spectacle', with or without the extortion.

They always think they can get away with it!

There is a list of politicians as long as your arm who thought that way before they were caught being a spectacle.

I just don't keep up with important news like chairpoodle does.

#46 | Posted by Zatoichi

Why do you have to be a dick when corrected? Is it because it happens so often?

I just happened to read the article that this thread revolves around, stupid. Put down the bottle and try it some time.

Good on Dave? For admitting he had affairs? If it were not for the blackmail, he would still be maintaining his infidelity. Just because he got caught and aired it to everyone, he gets a fucking gold star on his forehead?

He must have known that this sort of thing would be more of a possibility were he to get married, but he did it anyway... perhaps for his child.

Good on Dave.

Yeah, what a noble guy...
It was so brave of him to cheat on the child's mother, and then make her an honest woman 5 years after the birth.
Give that guy a Medal of Freedom!

I hope Sarah Palin pays this dick back in spades.

I hope they beat each-other to death.

Ah, Murphy, Crispee, and Chair, those who would throw the first stone as they are SO sinless.

Letterman is like most men, does at at least half his thinking with his small head.

Nothing new under the sun, and yes, I do give him props if he married because of his child, regardless of the potential blackmail that might not have occurred had he not married.

I hope they beat each-other to death.

#59 | Posted by 101Chairborne

If there's beating involving a woman, Dave's all in.

Think of the blackmail that would not have happened had he not cheated on the child's mother.

But no, you're right, we should give people "props" for doing what any normal human being does. You know, like getting married, breathing, eating, etc

Corky, this is Letterman, not Obama.

"Good on Dave? For admitting he had affairs? If it were not for the blackmail, he would still be maintaining his infidelity. Just because he got caught and aired it to everyone, he gets a ******* gold star on his forehead?"

Yes, he is or will be called, HERO ON THE LEFT. Well, this makes the Palin thing go away rather quickly eh?

Dear Sir,

While we understand your (faux) outrage at the sinless goings on in the natural world, we would like to remind you of that time outside Denny's when you nearly buggered the life out of poor Paul Shaffer.

And although that unfortunate incident might have resulted in a childless union, you should understand that not all of us can be as sinless as you.

Sincerely,

Pope Corky Paul III

-"Good on Dave? For admitting he had affairs?

One assumes they don't teach reading comprehension in the Chapel.

If Letterman didn't rip on conservatives every chance he got, Dorky wouldn't be here defending him. That is just a fact.

Come on Corky, we both know I'm not the least bit outraged by this, faux or real.
I'm simply pointing out that there's absolutely no reason to give Letterman any "props" for marrying the mother of his child, especially considering he ran around on her.

Do you believe the kid will grow up and say "Dad did the right thing and married mom when I was 5! He's a swell guy for doing that, and for running around on her."

If I didn't tear Joe a new asshole every other day, he wouldn't be here blabbering about it. That's just a fact.

Gee golly willikers, 101,

If Letterman were black, you'd be ecstatic if he married his child's mother.

blabbering = blubbering...much more accurate

If Letterman were black, you'd be ecstatic if he married his child's mother.

If Letterman were black he wouldn't have been in a position to have sex with "co-workers"...

If he were black, he could do from around the corner.....

and that's what really pisses you off!!

If Letterman was black and a woman, he wouldn't know who the father was.

I felt left out of this racist joke love-fest.

" Put down the bottle "

But the Perrier isn't finished yet!

If Letterman was Black, he couldn't have issued the $2M sting check.

Someone should Photoshop a hip-hop Gangsta' Dave tribute.

How did we get on the "If Letterman was Black" theme anyway?

It's 101's fault.

"How did we get on the "If Letterman was Black" theme anyway?"

Another lame Corky retort. When backed into a corner, bring out the race card or Bush card. Regardless of the thread.

Too bad Kanrei said that, not Dorky.

It was entertaining.

If Letterman were Jewish, she never would have gotten a penny.

If Letterman were Irish, he wouldn't have remembered which one

If Letterman were Mexican, he would already be in another country.

Come on, this can be fun!

If Letterman were a liberal, the affairs would have been with men.

Fuck all you assholes calling Letterman Black.Fuck you all again you fucking fuckers!
Celesary

If Letterman were a lawyer, he could have bored the blackmailer into submission.

If Letterman were a liberal, the affairs would have been with men.

If Letterman were a Republican, they would have involved a "glory hole," a men's room, and a scared and confused male intern.

-If Letterman were a liberal, the affairs would have been with men.

How counter-intuitive, considering the toe-tapping facts, Counselor.

If Letterman was an American Indian, he would have been blackmailed by a Buffalo.

If Letterman was from Chicago he would'nt be going to the Olympics.

If Letterman were a Hmong, he would have shot the blackmailer from a tree stand.

If Letterman was FrankF2.5, this wouldn't have happened.

If Letterman was FrankF2.5, this wouldn't have happened.

Now there you go being dishonest again and shortchanging Frank. You know it is 2.75 now. Come on Wis.

This is the kind of crap we've come to expect from the scum under the DR bridge.

Do you think anybody on his staff would have waited for him to wrap it that many times to gain 1/4"?

Maybe Micro Surgery for this procedure isn't covered under the little guys Health Care Plan.

If there's beating involving a woman, Dave's all in.

The venom being spewed at David Letterman ever since he dared to tell a joke about Palin's daughter is ridiculous. He favors the beating of women now? Sheesh. The guy's a comedian. He'll tell jokes about his own failings just as comfortably as he tells jokes about others.

It's wrong that he committed adultery, but the people casting judgment on him because he married his wife *after* they had a kid need to look at a calendar. It's 2009. Millions of Americans choose to have kids outside of marriage. I think marriage is important, but not enough to cast so many stones at people who feel differently than I do.

#97...

Are you saying he has not made jokes about politicians ( mostly repubs) and doesn't deserve to be the butt end of the hypocrisy joke?

Letterman deserves to be the butt of hypocrisy jokes and any other jokes that can be made of this.

Well I'm going to say the obvious unlike many of you. This shows how incredibly stupid Letterman is. A smart person does not have sex with people that work for them. It creates problems in the work place. It can lead to favoritism and create a hostile environment among co-workers. This behavior sometimes creates more problems than it's worth trying to get the show done.

I'm not going to mention his wife because that's between them. In this day and age, they could have some special arrangement that says it's ok and it's not my job to criticize him for it because it's between him and his wife.

Lonnie

The full 10-minute video of Letterman explaining all of this is funny:

www.youtube.com

Letterman definitely deserves to be the butt of jokes... but what are cute, young interns for, if not bangin'?

No, I'm not being serious.

As for hypocrisy?

Comedians are held to a different standard than politicians.

On one hand, you have a man behind the pulpit, or deciding national policy and proclaiming to people that sex outside of marriage is 'evil', and marriage can only be a certain way.... except for himself.

Then you have someone whose only job is to make people laugh.

We can laugh at him as well as with him.

CBS would be entirely within their rights to pull the plug on him. Sexual harassment laws being what they are, being a 'boss' and bangin' girls that work under you is like playing with land mines. While extortion by a third party for $2 million is illegal (and a bit greedy), having a girl he used turn around and sue for $20,000,000 is A-OK.

And BTW, for future reference, if you're thinking about 'extortion', just get a picture (or better, video) of the crime with a hidden camera, and anonymously sell it to a magazine. You won't necessarily get $2,000,000, but you'll get quite enough money to make it worthwhile, and not go to prison for it.

He favors the beating of women now?

But what if it was with...men?

This guy's a pig and he has the nerve to make jokes about others and their children. Turns out he is a jerk and with all that money. Another guy with tons of money and notoriety who thinks he can do anything he damn well pleases. He was my guy over Leno and certainly O'Brien. I guess it will be TCM or AMC for me from here on in.

I see wissy-wussy and cripeecritter are obsessing about my dick again...

Neither of you has a chance.

#119...
Now now 8, he said he has enough. I mean had enough.

Having worked in PR for a few years, Letterman did exactly what I would have advised. Get it out, spill it, apologise and move on. Do not evade questions of a follow-up nature but refuse to rehash what has been addressed (politely refuse, that is).
He really is a brilliant host even though I rarely watch him. People will move on and forget.

"People will move on and forget."

Good point. It will be one or two news cycles. If he hid it and/or lied about it, it would have been ten.

But, having used this material in his show he has now jumped the shark.

#121...

Based on the applause the audience gave him you are probably right.

The question is... What is the line on him doing it again? Well, getting caught doing it again?
