Chicago is unlikely to reap a financial profit by hosting the Olympics but the city may improve it's image.

Not an adequate reason the run the risk in my opinion.

What does the Olympics come down to in its most basic form or quality - its really just a low grade Circus right? Or discarding that label the Olympics are just a form of "Amateur" Entertainment! But heres the rub and its that no other form of Entertainment,be it sport or music or theatre,that comes to town,gets $Billions in Free Funding from the (mostly unwitting) taxpayers! I lived in Kennesaw GA at the time the Olympics were announced until after they were over.

It was a grand time for the city watching the the preparations, the construction, listening to the buzz. A large sign over I-75/85 just north of town counted down the days.

I didn't want to go to any events because I hate crowds and I was sure it would be disorganized and like a bad trip to Six Flags. My wife insisted we go just once. We had some free tickets (they ended up being everywhere, especially if you "knew" somebody) to the Nicauragua/Japan baseball game.

It was a blast!

We went three more times. The foreigners and excitement and sponsors and everything made it quite exciting. I was very pleasantly surprised how well it was run.

They did not allow driving into the city, so there were satellite parking stations. The one nearest my house was Kennesaw State College. There were municipal buses from all over the city -- not just MARTA.

We were on a bus loaned by the city of Chicago (coincidentally vis-a-vis this thread) one night and the driver got lost in a very bad part of town. There were some Danes on the bus with flags painted on the faces and some Japanese waving flags. We were all so drunk and the Dane started passing around a bottle of tequila! The bus driver meanwhile was driving 45-50 MPH on these urban streets trying to get out of that part of town. We were falling out of our seats laughing uncontrollably with everyone chattering in a different language.

Many other stories --- but in short, it was a grand time. I'd do it again.
