The husband of Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D.-N.Y.) died Friday while descending the Cho Oyu mountain between Nepal and Tibet. Clifton Maloney, 71, a retired investment banker and experienced climber, was resting in a high-altitude camp after a successful ascent to the summit of the world's sixth-highest mountain

Those are some real hombres who climb those monsters. At 14,000 feet I'm gasping for air, and have to really take my time. Getting better, though :)

Kudos to a guy who is still going at it in his 70's.
RIP.

Hmmm, the husband of the Rep Carolyn Maloney. Sibel Edmonds claimed she was filmed by Turkish Intelligence in a lesbian tryst.

Ah, obviously the beginnings' of a nefarious plot aimed at overthrowing the Congress. 'The game is afoot!'

I never knew you mountain climbed, RightisRight. I'm impressed!

I use to watch in amazement over by Camp 4 in Yosemite (which was the base camp for the climbers who took on the granite cliffs there in Yosemite Valley) and you could look up and see the climbers literally hanging by a rope off some of these sheer drops.

It takes more nerve than I've got.

He was Dem. That sucks. RIP

" you could look up and see the climbers literally hanging by a rope off some of these sheer drops. "

That's nothing compared to free-soloing, i.e., rope-free climbing. Above 100 ft or so, one mistake and you're dead or a paraplegic.

With apologies in advance for sounding trite, isn't this a great way to go? 70+ years old, on the way down from the 6th highest mountain in the world?

Try above 10ft

In case anyone is interested, Discovery did a really good documentary of a team of 6 guys who tried to ascend everest a couple of years ago, you can get it streaming on netflix.

Absolutely beautiful country and brutal. The thing i was most surprised about was how much the price of making the climb has come down. When i first became interested in the Himalayan mtns it was nearly half a million dollars to make an attempt. Now its down to about 40k.

Any time you take your body above 8000 feet you are taking your life into your own hands (this is mostly for us sea level dwellers) Even young fit people are at risk for Altitude sickness. I agree with RiR. Cant think of a better way to finish off a good life. i personally was planning on skydiving into a volcano when it became apparent that i was no longer able to take care of myself.

No Death Panels for me!

Bless his heart!

When most people at his age are unable to move around like they used to or are riddled with illnesses, this man climbed a mountain and died after doing something he loved.

RIP

So sad. Sounds like a pulmonary edema. He sounds pretty healthy. These things happen to climbers of all ages while in rare-air zones, and edemas can be quick killers. Too bad.

His last words as he was falling were, "At least I don't have to listen to her bitching about healthcare anymore."

Well I guess I better buy that beer I promised Rogers if anything actually useful was ever posted on the DR. Never thought I'd ever see this day in a thousand lifetimes

That's a wussy way to go. You want to go up in a huge freaking fireball with a mushroom cloud that hangs around for a while.

A bit more dramatic and much more satisfying.

"His last words as he was falling were, "At least I don't have to listen to her bitching about healthcare anymore."

Didn't read the article as usual, right?

"between Nepal and Tibet."

Jesus H Christ, don't American mountains kill people anymore? We have to outsource that too?

They do, member, but it's much more exotic to die on one of the 7 peaks or their smaller relatives than it is to die in the Tetons. Still awesome to see an old timer still climbing at that age. I hope I'm still able to do those types of things if I make it to my 70's.

I bet this guy had been planning this from the start to give his wife a sympathy boost in the votes for Nationalized Health Care.

Okay, not really.

Apparently Sibil Edmonds makes a lot of claims and then publishes them in the "American Conservative Mag"

Did you and your cronies ever find the "whitey" tape ? or ya savin it for the right time??

I am sure there was no tax payer money involved

Is 'Climbing a Mountain in Tibet' anything like Sanford 'Hiking in the Applalachians'?

What is the "whitey" tape? and no I'm not a conservative, Bush was a lying idiot and Regan was senile before he took office.
I believe what Ms Edmonds has to offer is worthwhile pursuing and I think it raises interesting questions about both democrat and republican politicians.
I sincerely hope Obama has the fortitude to reform the crap that is going on.
I'll settle for a public option over universal care for a start but really when you see health insurance reform being writting by someone like Backus and all the money he's received from the insurance industry you've gotta wonder.

Doing what you love at 71, that's a pretty good way to go.

Out on a high note.

Obviously he was a victim of the vast right-wing conspiracy. They must have bribed the sherpas to do something devious.

Or maybe this was a love triangle thing. He was banging one of the sherpas and the jealous lover threw his old ass off the mountain. Just tossing some plausible theories out there.

You've been doing that for quite sometime now.

It hasn't worked yet!

Beyotch!
