Youngsters who are spanked might lose IQ points, according to Murray Straus of the Family Research Laboratory. Children's IQs are on the rise, and at least one expert believes that part of the reason why corporal punishment is falling out of favor in the United States and elsewhere.

Most kids have their head up their ass anyway.

SEEEEE....I told you that this kind of punishment is not productive!

Ya'll need to listen to me more often!! :)

"Most kids have their head up their ass anyway."

Well, that certainly explains your posts.

Does the same thing happen to adults when they are spanked?

Gwad, I hope not ...

Well, this does explain why Doc changed his name from Spanky Spankerton. Well, that and a couple more reasons.

Spanking May Lower Kids' IQs Down to Those of the Parents That Spank

What about punching them?

"What about punching them?"

Why not?....seems to have worked quite well in your case...

What about punching them?

Nah, much better to hit them with a pillow case filled with oranges, less marks.

A corn cob and turpentine will keep the girls out of trouble.

Waterboard them.

SO my IQ should be 225 instead of a paltry 185/190?

Its nice to meet you your Royal Highness. *hit tip*

Now, there's some sound scientific research.

i suppose i should have whacked my three geniuses more? actually, only two were spankworthy and one not - she IS by far the more brainy of the three although none of them has had a difficult time academically and all are musicians.

never spank in anger and only after a warning.

Hmmm, who tends to spank more, righties or lefties???? Explains a lot.

"...and all are musicians."

Big deal...lots of ignorant dirtbags are musicians.

"Lower class people both smack more and have lower IQ so any significant difference is most likely to be a class effect, not an effect of spanking."

Can you say "red state"?

What a load of crap! Reasonable spankings (especially of toddlers) not prompted by a parent lashing out in anger are a great parental tool. As far as IQ's rising (probably BS) if that's so it's most likely due to better diets and (it chokes me to say this) mental stimulation from TV, video games etc.

I really wanna to take back that TV, video games comment but I'll leave it

Statistics have shown that taller kids are better readers.

It's called a spurious correlation.

AGE is the reason for taller kids being better readers.

I've met quite a few "geniuses" whose families are a mess and even more "simpletons" with amazing families with well-adjusted and obedient children that are a joy to be around.

Think of Matt Damon in "Good Will Hunting."

"If you spank, you teach your child that hitting is the way to deal with a situation," she said. "But if you use other methods of discipline, you can begin teaching your child higher-level cognitive skills, self-control, cause-and-effect and logical thinking."

Some "educated people" like knocking starw-men down!

That's like saying that a child burning his hand on the pellet stove will learn how to be an arsonist.

Just about every trip to the grocery store I see some Mom and her 3-5 year old that appears uncontrollable, screaming and often cussing or threatening his/her mom while the Mom "reasons" with the child, threatens a "time out" etc.

There's a "cause and effect" relationship, and it ain't a good one.

Straw-man arguments

"Just about every trip to the grocery store I see some Mom and her 3-5 year old that appears uncontrollable, screaming and often cussing or threatening his/her mom while the Mom "reasons" with the child, threatens a "time out" etc."

So kirk sees a crappy parent in the walmart and thinks beating the kid is the answer.

What a fucking moron.

I know when I was a kid and I acted out in a store Mom always either spanked Me right then and there or drug My ass outside for a spanking/yelling fit. Oh and DHS/CPS's were not called.

Hey now I can't help that the electrical impulses created by the spankings fried My brain. I should have been "grounded" first and THEN spanked. At least the electrical impulses would have gone to ground instead of upto My brain. Oh well too late for that.

Larry

"Oh well too late for that."

At least you're taking it well.

Have some potato chips.

Potato chips create havoc for My IBS. I'll skip them thanks.

[Whew!!!] What a relief that is to hear Larry I thought you were avoiding me after that scorching afternoon of one sided passion back in June where I had you where I wanted you in that dusty Kansas sunflower field. Was the Doc able to stitch your corn chute up all proper afterwards?

Gimme_sum_lovin'_Larry

[I really should check my dumps record before I submit this but hey what's a life without funsies?!?!?!?!?]

Thanks Larry. Got it and responded.

My Dad told me about a fellow who happened to be sherrif of the next county over, and the guy had a 'time-out' room built into his barn. Complete with a bathroom. When his kids acted up, he would send them to "Jail" for the afternoon. My Dad thought it was horrendous, saying "Why doesn't he just beat the shit out of them(his kids) like everyone else?"

Well. Hm. IN the barn? Interesting because part of the logic of time-outs is to remove the child from where the "fun" is. Seriously. I don't know if it works (I know spanking is rife with problems, though I also know that spanking and abuse can be quite distant from one another), but that's the idea. Or one of them. I think time-outs require more patience and greater time investment by the parent.

I remember when my oldest was two and ran out into the road. It was icy as shit and I'm after her yelling but she didn't listen. One good swat took care of that. Sometimes, especially with little kids, you can't explain something they won't understand.

WURSTER is correct. I frown on spanking but something like it is required to teach avoidance of dangerous behaviors where another chance to teach may be intrinsically unavailable.

Attempting to use time-out to teach the four-year-old not to run into traffic may mean a dead kid. You also don't want to give him any practice setting fire to your drapes.

So kirk sees a crappy parent in the walmart and thinks beating the kid is the answer.

If by "beating" you mean loving discipline involving a minor swat on the butt followed by loving words that the BEHAVIOR is the problem not them, YES, I DO think crappy parenting lacks that.

Please share your effective parenting style...or stop calling others morons.

EVERY crappy parent I see is trying "time-outs" EXCLUSIVELY.

"Time outs", withholding rewards, creative communication are ALL good; physical abuse, such as hits and kicks with hands or feet accompanied by cussing or personal insults are terribly destructive. 95% of convicts in prison in the US were told by one or more parents that they'd wind up in prison--a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The only time my grandma physically punished me was when I beat down her gladiolus flowers and she switched me. Crepe myrtle makes a mighty good switch. My dad would use his belt on me and my two brothers. I felt like that was kind of rough until one day I asked granddad what was that thick piece of leather hanging inside his closet. He said it was a razor strop and what he used to use to whip my dad and my uncle with when they needed it. Oddly enough, granddad was a graduate of Vanderbilt, dad of UNC-Chapel Hill and I went to UofAla. Maybe the theory is right.

The effect of corporal punishment on IQ is just a theory but the effects on EQ is obvious.

They have the findings backwards: already stupid kids get spanked more.

I guess this liberal cock sucker must have had the shit beat out of him when he was a kid, cause he is dumber than nancy the slut pelosi now.

I had no idea you were a birther 2.5 I feel for ya I really do

Are we sure that the low IQ isn't a result of being the offspring of people that spank to begin with?
