It was just too much, having to return to court twice on the same day to contest yet another traffic ticket, and Jericho, Ark., Fire Chief Don Payne didn't hesitate to tell the judge what he thought of the police and their speed traps. The response from cops? They shot him. Right there in court.

Holy crap!

they shot him in the back!
LOL

Send them to the big house.

Cant wait for the FBI to dig into this for Fraud.

Looks like lots of jail time for the bacon and their Mayor.

Holy shit. I can't believe this article. I mean I believe it, but I don't want to. There's too many ridiculous lines to comment on.

I know Right HC?

If I saw this on a TV show i would think it was crap because it was unrealistic.

The crazy thing about this article at the DR is that there isn't enough info to mount a partisan attack on the cops... or the fireman... or the town.

Usually I'm happy with that, but here, I'm just looking for an explanation.

How about this: They were corrupt. No political party necessary. It was simply a case of absolute power corrupting absolutely.

Fuck, Moomo... I'd rather it be something potentially curable.

The town had what, 175 residents.

Memories of the Milgram prison experiment come to mind.

Fuck, Moomo... I'd rather it be something potentially curable.

Sounds like it is. Sometimes the cure can damn near kill you though. That is a lesson this countries founders didn't want us to forget. Such is life.

countries = country's

"That is a lesson this countries founders didn't want us to forget. Such is life."

Sometimes I think we give the wealthy, slave holding, landowners too much credit.

Sometimes I think we are too concerned with what other people have that we don't instead of worrying about what we can do for ourselves.

I'm not so concerned with what other people have as I am in how it was acquired.

That isn't always as noble as your implication that its due to hard work.

.......police gone wild........

.....reminds me of the story about another small southern town where the cops routinely stopped people, confiscated their cars and cash as being from the "proceeds of crime", and did not need any proof or even to go before a judge.......

......when no one polices the police......

"Martin declined to name the officer who shot Payne. It's unclear if the officer has been disciplined."

????? This town must be tripping on acid.

"Sometimes I think we are too concerned with what other people have that we don't instead of worrying about what we can do for ourselves."

Sometimes I think people who make statements like that are pompous assholes.

Is it me or is the constabulary force in the u.s. going off the deep end? There seems to be more and more reports of innocent people getting shot, tasered, hit, strangled, harassed, etc.

"Sometimes I think we are too concerned with what other people have that we don't instead of worrying about what we can do for ourselves."

Unless they are "ethnic" then we best check em out real good, right?

Prosecutor Lindsey Fairley said Thursday that he didn't plan to file any felony charges against the officer or Payne. Fairley, reached at his home, said Payne could face a misdemeanor charge stemming from the scuffle, but that would be up to the city's judge. He said he didn't remember the name of the officer who fired the shot.
What? So the cop just ges off free?

I agree with HC, this story is fucked up on so many levels.

Why the police equipment sales brochures in the back of the mayor's car?

Why is city hall locked up with all of the financial documentation inside?

How the fuck is the shooting just going to go unpunished with the possibility of the guy who got shot getting a misdemeanor?

What the fuck?

I think this is a script for a lifetime movie that got leaked and mistaken for news.

The state needs to get involved. WTF is going on in that town. It sounds like it happened in Lagos or some other third world city not in America.

Ah, figured it out.

"Arkansas"

Fucking bullshi. The Judge an't remember the name of the Officer who shot the guy?? In such a small town too?? Oh and the victim maybe charged??This is totally fucked up.

Larry

"When I first moved out here, they wrote me a ticket for going 58 mph in my driveway," 75-year-old retiree Albert Beebe said.

Cops are out of control in that town.

"Cops are out of control in that town."

In many towns.

In many towns.

I would agree, but I fear the cops in my town.

i fear cops more than muslims.

the worst thing a muslim ever did to me was sell me a stale candy bar at the corner delicatessen.

#16 - my thoughts exactly. Not a felony? What the fucking fuck is that fucking fuck fucking talking about?

Pardon my redundancy.

#24 - Sure, that's how it starts, Nerf. Next thing you know it's an undercooked kebab or some moldy falafel. And then BOOM, our country has been taken over.

::must remember to mind my pints and quarts when traveling over memphis way::

i LOVE the law enforcement in our area - they are a great bunch of people.

nerf: agreed and lmao

Did I read correctly that they are not at this time intending to press charges against the shooter? I mean its damn hard to justify shooting unarmed individual in the back as self defense or necessary force. Especially in a 7-on-1 scuffle lol

Where I grew up, cops had to surrender their firearms before entering a court. Only the bailifs were armed. Not sure if that is the standard here in Pittsburgh, but I dont recall any cops i have seen testify in court packing any hardware. I kinda thought that was standard....live and learn

"With 174 residents, the city can keep seven police officers on its rolls but missed payments on police and fire department vehicles and saw its last business close its doors a few weeks ago."

Cue the banjo music. Taxes will have to respond with a shoot-out in a police station if it wants to be the dumbest.

Pity the fire chief though, it doesn't sound like the town has anything to sue for.

"i LOVE the law enforcement in our area - they are a great bunch of people."

Translation: they're all clan members.

Wasn't this "Walking Tall"?

Anyone know why the prosecutor is not charging the pig who shot this guy?

Generally when you shoot someone in the back, you get charged with a crime.

i can tell you, however, where they are - my husband saw a drop box at a sheriff's office one evening on his way home from work "KNIGHT DROP" - and our daughter was spending the night at a friend's whose folks are uppity mucks a few years ago and something startled them awake and they looked out the window and saw a man in a white hood walking through their back yard. one sign of the KKK is they incorporate the color pink in their motif, whether it be their house or business. subtle, eh?

Wow! Stay away from there!

Reminds about that movie with Dan Akroyd?? And the judge with the penis nose?? lol

Demi Moore was in it too.

I agree - cops are out of control in many jurisdictions. Any cop who gets caught doing something a cop should not do has only to jump jurisdictions, going to work for another force and continuing his reign of terror.

We need a national vetting program for cops, a national database to stop jurisdiction-hopping, and a national training and certification program to make sure cops know the law - and citizens' rights.

If Only the People in the Court were armed, this never would have happened!
Oh, and it's a good example of why we need everyone who visits a national park to carry an Assault Rifle.
That way, when you see a group with ak47's AND some Tortillas, you won't know whether they are growin' the reefers, or just camping!

Sincerely

The NRA Union

It's like a Dukes of Hazzard episode - on steroids.

Usually this shit is a form of highway robbery designed to get people going through town. The lot should be in prison including the judge.

Prosecutor Lindsey Fairley

Fairley, hardly.

"Anyone know why the prosecutor is not charging the pig who shot this guy?

#32 | Posted by ZombieHunter"

Because, like in most cities and towns, prosecutors and cops are essentially the same thing.

Exactly. The same reason a big fat Chicago cop who was caught on video beating the shit out of a tiny female bartender got no jail time.

"Exactly. The same reason a big fat Chicago cop who was caught on video beating the shit out of a tiny female bartender got no jail time."

I can't believe it.

Monte and Joe playing nice.

Don't worry, it won't last. (Joe always agrees with me, except when he's wrong. Which is why it won't last.)

...there isn't enough info to mount a partisan attack on the cops... or the fireman... or the town.

I guess you can't call it partisan when the whole town is a bunch of radical right wing rednecks.

Generally when you shoot someone in the back, you get charged with a crime.

Shoot someone in the face, not so much, either.

Ok this sure sounds like total corruption.

Town of 174.
Has 7 cops
Has Police Chief
Has Court House
Has Prosecutor
Has a Judge...

????

Lets see cops get away with "murder". Prosecutor sounds like he was on their team. This happens and the judge as a last act before stepping down wipes out all existing tickets? Was the Judge on their team until they went too far? Judge trying to save career and stay out of Jail or just disgusted? Cop (1 of 7) CONFRONTING the unarmed Fire Chief in court shoots him in THE BACK and no charges are expected to be filed???? WOW.

Anyone hear the banjo playing?

They all belong in their own fucking jail.

I guess you can't call it partisan when the whole town is a bunch of radical right wing rednecks.

I think they could be a bunch of left-wing whackjobs just as easily (taking money by force, using the power of gov't to extort the citizens). In fact, the state of AR has many more elected dems than repubs in office (both senators and all but 1 in congress are dems, I believe).

From the little mentioned in the article, they have been taking lessons from the Chicago thugocracy, with maybe a dash of California's beat down thrown in to the mix.

Having lived a while in AR, let me just say I was VERy happy to escape from that place. Almost as bad as living in Maryland.

What part of his body is court? I know wher the head is and some other parts but court is a new one.

The woman was shot and the bullet is in her yet. I don't know where that is either.

Sniper... why do I get a mental image of you saying to a woman "Am I there yet... Am I there yet..."

LOL

ff for 1lib

The Fireman could face misdemeanor charges? You've got to be kidding me. That cop should be looking at assault with a deadly weapon or possibly attempted homicide.

....a little southern hospitality ?

"Generally when you shoot someone in the back, you get charged with a crime."

Unless you're Border Patrol. Then you're a hero.

Living in AR, I can attest to the harassment of the cops. They lie in wait for unsuspecting motorists, hand out tickets for minor things (a blown tail light will cost ya 150) and heaven help if you are in an accident.

Got a warning once for "following to closely", although I was driving a 5 speed standard transmission vehicle, going uphill behind some doofus doing 20 mph in a 45. If I had taken my foot off the gas, the truck would have died. Ah the wonders of our local tax collectors.

Wow! Stay away from there!

Nothing but Trouble

This town reminds me of the village of Lindale near me.

It is a town of about 117 (2000) and they issue thousands of tickets every year because the little shit hole straddles about .25 of a mile on I 71 between the main inner ring suburbs and Cleveland proper.

en.wikipedia.org

its the little red dot in the middle of the picture.

The town should have been absorbed by cleveland or Brooklyn (the suburb directly south of it) years ago. but there are a mountain of people there who earn their "Living" as leaches off the ticket revenue.

www.auditor.state.oh.us

this stuff makes me ill to read.

The residents pay about 1/5 of the cost of their town, the rest of it is extorted out of people driving to and from work.

I think they could be a bunch of left-wing whackjobs just as easily...

That will be a day to mark in history when a cop from Arkansas is a liberal. Next you will be saying they are all gay too. Yea, right.

All gay in AR? Are you kidding... they aren't sexist in AR... they have family. Don't matter, dad, mom, brother, sister, aunt... or small farm animals probably.

I don't see how that can properly be call "conservative" or even a "rightie".

And the idea that you can continually screw someone else to pay for what you want is, sadly, a trait that both those on the left and the right are all to quick to apply.

Don't know where the JUDGE that found all these people guilty sits on the political spectrum. Same for the person who is the local law enforcement officer. He might be a dem, a repub, or no political party (some cities do not have party affiliation for police and other services).

I would say that all the cops and the judge sound like crooks.
