Teddy exhibited conscienceness of guilt with his actions after the negligent homicide and in his memoirs.

It was said she was alive for two hours--I disputed that. My thoughts were she hit her head, and drowned very shortly after the accident. If she was alive and conscious for two hours she should have been able to get out the same way Kennedy did and swim to the surface. The water was only 8 feet deep. My point was that she was probably dead soon after the accident--not that she should have been able to save herself, and that a diver would have no experience placing the time of death over 12 hours after the accident--a coroner--yes--a diver---no. If she were alive, one of the doors could have been opened since the pressure would have been equalized. But most likely one of the doors was already opened since Kennedy probably got out that way. He couldn't have gotten out until the water pressure equalized, since the water rushing in would have prevented his exit even if he were strong enough to open the door. If that were the case, the door would still have been opened, and she could have escaped. If Kennedy escaped through a window--the window would still have been opened. My point was that she was dead soon after the accident--not that it was her fault for escaping. If the door was open--she should have been able to escape if she were alive and conscious. If the door was closed--how did Kennedy get out. No one knows exactly what happened---there is only speculation. I speculate that she died quickly and gave my reasons. Others speculate that she died slowly and placed their speculation on a diver giving the time of death. I question his expertise in that area. When did the coroner say she died?

As to Kennedy's actions, only he knew for sure about that--but he did do a lot of drinking in his later life. I also speculated that Kennedy should have taken her with him when he left. That she didn't follow him out makes me think she was unconscious---I don't think an aware person would sit calmly by as the car sank--escape would be a paramount thought. As the minutes and hours ticked by--escape would have been attempted by any means. That no attempts of escape were reported, I think she died quickly--there were few seatbelts in that time, and those who had them rarely wore them. A car turning over and landing on its top could easily have caused her to hit her head on the roof as the car hit the water.

Kennedy had to live with the guilt all the rest of his life. The question really boils down to whether he was really the monster who let her die or he was lost and confused by the accident.
I can only add this, when I was in high school I went out driving one night and alcohol may have been consumed. I drove into a tree. I know now and shortly thereafter, I was in shock and didn't have a clue what I was doing for the next few days.
Why is it so hard to accept that when it involves a Kennedy??? Because the name Kennedy sells newspapers.
