Mohamed ElBaradei, outgoing chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has called the Iranian threat "hyped," saying there is no proof the Islamic republic will soon have nuclear weapons. "In many ways, I think the threat has been hyped," ElBaradei told the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in an interview released Tuesday. "Yes, there's concern about Iran's future intentions and Iran needs to be more transparent with the IAEA and international community," he told the Chicago-based magazine. "But the idea that we'll wake up tomorrow and Iran will have a nuclear weapon is an idea that isn't supported by the facts as we have seen them so far."

Yes, the Iranian "nuke threat" has been hyped since 1995.

"But the idea that we'll wake up tomorrow and Iran will have a nuclear weapon is an idea that isn't supported by the facts as we have seen them so far."

And who, exactly, has made that assertion? Nobody? Oh.

On the one hand, I am paranoid about the government lying to us about another countries possession of WMDs. (We all learned that lesson from GWB.) On the other hand, given the rhetoric coming out of Tehran, it is difficult to look upon Iran's nuclear program as entirely benign. The obvious proper course of action is to maintain a high level of scrutiny, while attempting to maintain dialogue even with those we distrust.

And who, exactly, has made that assertion? Nobody? Oh.

Iranian nuke in 2009.

Lucky for us, they have someone dying to nuke them a mere 500 miles away...who just happens to have 300 nukes at their disposal.

Stating in January of 2009 that the Iranians could have a nuke at the end of the year is hardly claiming we're going to wake up tomorrow to a nuclear armed Iran.

The obvious proper course of action is to maintain a high level of scrutiny, while attempting to maintain dialogue even with those we distrust.

Obviously. History shows that works every time with crazy regimes hell bent on a fight. Well, part of the time. Well, maybe once. Actually not at all.

Never mind.

Stating in January of 2009 that the Iranians could have a nuke at the end of the year is hardly claiming we're going to wake up tomorrow to a nuclear armed Iran.

As compared to the rhetoric that they were 10 years from a nuke in 2007, yes it is.

Unless you are literally suggesting 24 hours...which is not what El Baradei is saying. He is talking about the hype of Iran getting nukes, not a timeline.

I wasn't suggesting anything. I simply used the quote from El Baradei, and responded.
Sure his quote was hyperbole, but it was still over the top.

Sure his quote was hyperbole, but it was still over the top.

The end of 2009 is 4 months away...suggesting that Iran will have nukes by end of this year is hype. Suggesting Iran will have material to produce 50 nukes in 4 months is over the top.

Actually, the article you're discussing said they could produce 1 with-in a year (i didn't look at the date of that article). A "year" isn't even remotely close to "tomorrow".

Having an advisor or an unamed source claim they could have a nuke in a year isn't exactly out of the question. Look how accurate we were in regards to Pakistan, India, and North Korea.

Did you see the way they were celebrating when they first produced their nuclear fuel. If this was to generate electricity and they already have electricity would they get this excited?

It doesn't really matter if the threat is real or not. If you point a toy gun at a police officer and he kills you does it matter that the gun was a toy?

Good point.

When it comes to nukes it damn sure does matter if the threat is real!

You cannot (morally) go into a country and murder millions of innocent people if the threat isn't real.

If the threat is "hyped" we should focus on those who "hyped" the threat and give their words little attention from here on out.

"If you point a toy gun at a police officer and he kills you does it matter that the gun was a toy?"

maybe the moral is don't go walking around as an armed police officer if you can't operate in a calm and objective manner to quickly distinguish what's a true threat and what isn't.

The entire world needs to jump on Iran's ass and demand inspections. We don't need another nuclear threat. And we should start eliminating all nukes as a basis why they should listen. Nuke power yes. Nuke bombs, no. Should be UN #1 objective. And should be supported by everyone or take them back to stone age conventionally. Or disband the useless UN. If we're going to police the world, I say we charge!

If this was to generate electricity and they already have electricity would they get this excited?

So its silly to have gotten excited over Apollo 11 because we had rockets since 1945ish?

Tel Aviv, London Paris and Islamabad would be good places to start. They'd never see it coming.

I am sorry, but I need to hear this from someone whose name is not Mohamed.

Like moths to a flame
Is man never gonna change
Times seen untold aggression
And infliction of pain
If thats the only thing thats stopping war

Then thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb

Nuke ya nuke ya

War is just another game
Tailor made for the insane
But make a threat of their annihilation
And nobody wants to play
If thats the only thing that keeps the peace

Then thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb

Nuke ya nuke ya

Today was tommorow yesterday
Its funny how the time can slip away
The face of the doomsday clock
Has launched a thousand wars
As we near the final hour
Time is the only foe we have

When war is obsolete
Ill thank God for wars defeat
But any talk about hell freezing over
Is all said with tongue in cheek
Until the day the war drums beat no more

Ill thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb

Nuke ya nuke ya

Just who has Iran invaded in the past 2500 years?

Only Greece in 400 BC!

And we know how that ended, don't we?

Nukes are here to stay and it isn't a matter of if it is a matter of when...

and throw-weights

This is no surprise. We've observed the western media cry wolf over iran's nukes for 10 fucking years, and each time, iran is "just about" to have the bomb. Just like most media outlets jumped on the WMD lie.

Why don't you guys lead by example instead of developing various low-yield nukes?

Yeah. "Mein Kampf" was over-hyped too....

oohhhh, how cute. the libtard takes a swing... now you can go back to swilling your wine and pontificating on the world knowing you're the better person.

certainly, the Iranians have nothing in common with Hitler, and don't really want to push Israel into the sea or kill all the jews. must be nice to live in your world. sleep tight little man.

Why does Mohamed Elbaradei have any credibility? He is just another Muslim fuck.

somoco, how much does israel pay you to shill for her or do you take your salary in little boys?

now go back to neocon toadie school like a good boy, and when you get older, perhaps i'll invite you over to mow my lawn.

perhaps i'll invite you over to mow my lawn.

Sure his quote was hyperbole, but it was still over the top. #9 | Posted by 101Chairborne

Only if you are looking to split hairs. We understand exactly what he meant--the threat is overblown.

Which of course should be no surprise to anybody who recalls the imminent threat of "mushroom clouds" Bushco/Israeli propaganda. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice...

ahh, the obligatory Hitler reference. Go back to grade school, neocon toad.

Ahhh, Nerfherder, are you Neville Chamberlain back from the dead? Well, those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it if the chance presents....

somoco, I'm 18. I don't yet have a wife. i believe you accidentally came over my house and nailed my dog. I found a trail of blood coming from him the other day. You should'nt be so rough on yer canine love interests. next time you come over let me know. we have a garden hose out back. you can water the lawn after mowing and when yer finished i might let you get freaky with the hose nozzle.

jon ryker, you pull out another obligatory--- the "if we don't do something about EYE-RAN then we are Neville Chamberlains". no one buys it any more. So go back to headquarters and blow your israeli overlords some more.

If you point a toy gun at a police officer and
he kills you does it matter that the gun was a toy?

A real police officer would know better than that.

Be Well.

Skip, you are a police officer?

So go back to headquarters and blow your israeli overlords some more.

Somoco brings up a legitimate point and just runs a little far with it. The Iranian government spouts a lot of apocalyptic rhetoric. The Israeli government should be slightly rattled though Ahmadinejad is a belligerent little short fuck who wouldn't have the authority to deploy nukes if Iran had them. Israeli foreign policy happens to be a neocon's wet dream come true, and it's making the situation a lot worse.

The best case scenario for a pre-emptive strike would be to delay the development of an Iranian bomb. All for the small cost of starting another war and killing countless innocent people. Proliferation of nuclear technology is ultimately not something that can be stopped militarily. The "threat" remains as long as the weapons do.

Nerherder,

Ahhhh, "Peace in Our Time", is it Neville? Better tell the Iranians...oh, wait, I'm sure our Fuhrer will just set down with them without preconditions and they'll give up all their naughty behavior....

Sing with me, now...

Obama's gonna change 'em
Obama's gonna change 'em
Gonna chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaangeeee 'emmmmmmmmm!

Sieg Heil!

Yes Iran's Nuke Threat was purposely Overblown by the "Racist" State of Israel!!!!

Also vastly Overblown is the the $4 Billion+ Dollars a year the American taxpayers are F-O-R-C-E-D to "contribute" to the racist and war-mongering State of Israel (anyone remember Israel's "Cowardly" Gaza Genocide against the defenseless Palestinians?)

Why is it that if I post a thread about Iran or Israel, the loonies come out in droves? Jewish conspiracies and Nazi references galore on this thread... is there anybody out there not drinking kool aid?

"Just who has Iran invaded in the past 2500 years?"

The USA.

Don't forget US embassies are considered US soil.

Iran has been an Islamic idiocracy for so long, they're certified nutballs capable of anything.

"Don't forget US embassies are considered US soil."

A common misconception...

U.S. Diplomatic and Consular Premises and Extraterritoriality: All depositions taken in Japan for use in the United States must take place on U.S. Embassy or consulate premises. Diplomatic and consular premises are not extraterritorial. The status of diplomatic and consular premises arises from the rules of law relating to immunity from the prescriptive and enforcement jurisdiction of the receiving state (Japan); the premises are not part of the territory of the sending state (the United States of America).

travel.state.gov

"Just who has Iran invaded in the past 2500 years?"

The USA.

So much for this silly drivel...

"It doesn't really matter if the threat is real or not. If you point a toy gun at a police officer and he kills you does it matter that the gun was a toy?

In the present case a more apt analogy is that he kills you and you didn't have a toy gun.

ahh, the obligatory Hitler reference. Go back to grade school, neocon toad.

Ahhh, Nerfherder, are you Neville Chamberlain back from the dead? Well, those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it if the chance presents....

Ahh the obligatory Chamberlain reference.

"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

Congratulations, 18 years old and 10 times the common sense as the wrinkled, old r'tards on this site.

I am beginning to dislike the general populous. (See most comments above)

Just like N Korea... Don't do anything until they have them. Then you lose negotiating power. 5 years 10 years who cares. The more countries with them certainly increase the chances somebody will blow one off. I don't want to see it. I don't want my heirs to see it. Trying to seek some sort of world peace is a good cause. And despite all our mistakes, I think all our soldiers spread out 6 feet under around the world demonstrate our true intentions and what you get when you follow our "true" ideologies. How we stray from holding people, dictators and countries responsible has to simply be more stern and recognized that bad behavior will not be tolerated. No more bleeding hearts for scum and those who's efforts are to be fundamentally f'ed up

Ahh the obligatory Chamberlain reference.

Tom W,

Yes, obligatory, because Chamberlains always pop back up in some liberal administration....they never learn.....they're also blissfully ignorant of how often this happens...

Jon Ryker, bringing up Chamberlain in this instance is silly. If Neville Chamberlain had an arsenal of 300 nukes at his disposal (as israel does) that he could launch if Hitler flew one plane into English controlled airspace, then I don't think neocons like you would be able to use him as as an example of appeasement.

however, being an obvious shill for israel and the neocon pov, which, i might add, is solidly entrenched in the progressive ideology that you supposedly hate (see: republican Teddy Roosevelt, father of the Bush doctrine and begetter of Woodrow Wilson and FDR for the beginnings), you need to make the situation look as desperate as possible in order to OK yet another military operation, ergo the ridiculous WWII comparisons and the constant use by you of the neocon touchstone words, "fascist, fuhrer, mein kampf and chamberlain".

Nerfherder,

The idea is that no one launch nukes. This would require some balls and prompt action...our Fuhrer is incapable of either. Of course, progressives like war, as they believe it enlivens the spirit and makes for easy focus of the masses on other issues. They also tend to get their countries into massive wars because of their misjudgment world politics.....In the end, their mistakes get cleaned up by large wars....they don't mind...

I agree completely that Teddy Roosevelt was an evil progressive asshole, just like Wilson, Roosevelt, Johnson, Hitler, Mussulini, Mao, and our current Fuhrer. What's your point? I didn't vote for him or any of them. Oh, that's right. You don't have a point. You simply label.....A witch! A witch! Burn!

I remain unimpressed....

so jon Ryker, you agree that Bush was an evil progressive asshole as well? you conveniently left him out perhaps.

Congratulations. you only said "fuhrer" in your post and refrained from hitler, chamberlain, mein kampf, and fascist. you're learning.

p.s. i don't have to label you a witch in order to burn you.

First off, I like for someone, anyone to post a speech, a quote, or even a thought cloud coming from Grand Ayatollah Khomeni stating that Iran seeks to build nuclear weapons or to stockpile same. I'll save you the time. He never has. Infact he issued an fatwa years ago stating that Iran would NEVER seek nuclear weapons and that possessing same was against the teachings in the Quoran. Google it if you don't believe it.

Ahmedinejad IS NOT the leader of Iran, Khomeni is and the Supreme Council. No matter what blather comes from Ahmedinejad's piehole, he has zero to do with Iran's nuclear industry nor its defenses, so it matters not his views on Israel, the Holocaust or anything outside of making internal Iran work.

For the person who asked why Iran needs nuclear energy for electricity, its quite simple. Iran IMPORTS gasoline to keep their growing youth population placated and we've seen how well that efforts going post election, haven't we? Iran has huge deposits of yellowcake and is seeking to become a global supplier of nuclear fuel for reactors in other countries. This is the reason they're enriching uranium and trying to perfect their process.

Do I trust them? Moreso than I do the pollyanna neo-cons itching for any reason to strike Iran. As mentioned before, Iran's MILITARY hasn't attacked another country in centuries. Obviously we can't say the same.

Iran is close to getting a nuke. Yeah, Yeah we have been hearing that shit for years nobody even cares anymore. If they wanted one they could go buy one already made.

Hahahahhaa, I love watching hard leftist make excuses for any and all enemies of America.

Hussein the Terrorist does have his constituency.
