Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The "cash for clunkers" program ends at 8 p.m. today, the Department of Transportation has told auto dealers. The stimulus program spurred the sales of 625,000 cars and total vouchers equalled $2.58 billion. "It's been a great run," said Mark Cannon of AutoNation, which made 12,000 deals under the program.

And the first missed payment on a Cash for Clunker deadbeat loan is only 7 days away.

That has to be one of the worse operated gov programs in a long time. It was to last 3 months and it only lasted 3 weeks.

Now, ask the dealers how they are banking the money the government hasn't given them yet for the trade-ins. Talk about a cash flow problem.

In related news, the much heralded "Cash for Geezers" will officially begin at 8:00:01 pm today, thereby insuring that more money will go to the scam artists.

Geezers will only go for five cents on the dollar, but in volume can add up, if there is property involved.

WHAT? OVER already? WTF? I was getting ready to trade my car in. I thought we had more time.

I see it moved a bunch of Toyota's and Honda's. LOL!

I always found it offensive that our elected leaders would call someone a clunker.

...and that the media would help to perpetuate that stereotype.

If $2.58 billion created all that economic activity, just think what $1 trillion should have done.

Where did the $1 trillion "stimulus" go again?

Oh yeah, it went to the Rich and Newly Friends of Obama.

Jeez, a program succeeds at selling cars beyond wildest expectations, and all any of you right-wing knuckleheads can do is piss and moan.

Wow, are you fucking stupid!?!?!?

It's clear you don't know what you are fucking talking about.

Why don't you go see if you qualify? I bet you don't. Banks haven't eased up their loans over this you stupid fucking moron.

Who in the fuck told you that and why do you insist on allowing them to make you fucking stupid?

Welcome to having a minority in the WH CBOB!!!

Get used to it. We have over 7 more years of their pant pissing.

Manypaths - Not that it's any of your business, but I just bought a new Honda for cash in April. Let's just wait six months and see if your boy Barney is calling for bailouts for the new auto loans that are defaulting. Do you think there might be a reason why people were driving these clunkers in the first place and not buying new cars?

cbo, the government program was to give away $3 billion tax payer dollars over the corse of 3 months. It failed beyond anyone's wildest immagination. It lasted 3 weeks. Just think what is going to happen when the doctor visit is free. Try to picture that if you can.

Do you think there might be a reason why people were driving these clunkers in the first place and not buying new cars?

Well the diehard Conservative in my office was saving the truck to give to his kid for school. They got 4500 bucks for it, bought a new car for themselves and gave the kid the car that they were driving.

Upgrades all around.

But continue to confuse this program with one's ability to get a loan from a financial institution.

It makes you look funny and I like to laugh.

That has to be one of the worse operated gov programs in a long time. It was to last 3 months and it only lasted 6 years.

Sniper loves wars, but hates programs that exceed expectations.

It ran out of money early because it was so successful you dumbfuck.

I mean really. How can you be so fucking stupid?

And we borrowed $8,000 from the Chinese to be repaid, with interest, over 20 years, so your neighbor could have his upgrades all around.

I'm laughing on the inside.

Sniper thinks this would have been a success had it taken a year for people to buy into it. The fact that the public took advantage of it so quickly means it sucked.......?!?!?!?!?!?

It's how we know he's fucking stupid.

$8,000!

Over 20 years!

Not Bad.

That has to be one of the worse operated gov programs in a long time. It was to last 3 months and it only lasted 3 weeks.

Unlike Bush's war in Iraq that was only supposed to last "six months, tops", and is now heading into year 7?

C for C was a success. The only thing that went wrong was it was more successful than predicted.

I realize righties like Snippy don't know what success is, having spent 8 years believing the Failure-in-Chief and his 9-11 allowing, two war losing, recession creating blunders were Missions Accomplished.

$4,671 in interest, paid out over 20 years, for a car that lasts 5 and a half or so.
Gud bidness. Especially when you factor in that we borrowed money from China, so that most of our new cars in the cash-4-clunkers could come from Japan.
Obamanomics in action! Gobama!

That has to be one of the worse operated gov programs in a long time. It was to last 3 months and it only lasted 3 weeks.

I hope you aren't self-employed as you know nothing of business.

The program was a fantastic success.

This right wing knucklehead doesn't bemoan the program at all. In a world with trillions in so-called stimulus doing next to nothing, this measly 3 billion really was truly stimulative, and the benefit went directly to average Americans, not Obama cronies.

That said, it was also one of the worst run programs in history. Did they not think that giving away money would be popular? They had no infrastructure to handle the program of their own devising. They left dealers in the lurch waiting for their money, so much so that the dealers had to pony up the money to such a degree that they went broke and had to be rescued by they manufacturers. The money ran out long before anticipated, even after the additional cash infusion. Sure, they could have made the program last longer, but then they would have had to "ration" the program.

So, after two weeks, the program ends broke, in a disorganized shambles, with only a lucky few benefiting.

AND YOU WANT THESE PEOPLE TO RUN YOUR HEALTH CARE?

Oh, and the reason the CFC program sold so many foreign cars is that Obama folded like a cheap camera when confronted by his international overlords when he dared mention any "buy American" provisions in his "stimulus" programs. Freaking coward.

23 | Posted by Dinsey at 2009-08-24 04:28 PM | Reply | Flag: - wants "ebil gub'mint" to tell him what kind of car to buy

CFC is a microcosm of any government program.

It cost 3 times more than it was 'thought' it would cost.

The people who benefited really didn't need the help.

The people who were supposed to benefit won't.

It only put off the inevitable because the money ran out.

It resulted in artificial inflationary pressure on the sector which the government wanted to 'help'.

The list goes on and on.

#23 - I wish you guys would get your talking points straight. I thought encouraging people to buy American was interfering with capitalism. Not that I disagree with a buy-American mindset, but I never hear conservatives saying that.

And "a lucky few benefiting?" Whether they ran out of money in a few weeks or it lasted 10 years has no effect on how many people the program helped.

I do wonder whether continuing to promote the sale of automobiles in a world of declining oil is a good idea. For the long run, I'd say no. We need to rethink our use of limited natural resources. But for the short-term goal of moving cars and having a stimulative economic effect, CFC seemed to do as intended.

I don't know what good this will do in the long run. It's like a tapped well (oil or water)... you've got the whole neighborhood sucking on the tit, figuratively speaking. It'll take time to replenish the goods... ya know what I mean?
Granted there were many sales in the short span of the program, but I doubt there will be any more for quite some time. Everybody that was serious and/or capable already bought their car. The remainder of those who are able will likely have that, "I missed out" feeling that will further hinder a future sale at least until that wares off. Some months from now, the only thing indicating the "Cash for Clunkers" happened will be a spike and the reactive dip in our little car-sales line graph. The market has a momentum behind it. Ya pedal hard up the hill, you'll get tired faster, end up coasting longer, and likely make it up the hill at the same time as the rest - if not behind the guy pacing himself. The Quick-fix spurt only works in the short-race, not the marathon. Analogies are fun aren't they?

several dealers I have read about stopped it a week ago because the govt had paid only 7 or 8 out of 40 or 50 deals...
in other words the govt was slow to take care of its promises..
YEP sounds like JUST THE PEOPLE to put in charge of health care...

That is BS. Because of the demand it caused in the automotive industry, dealers didn't come down on the prices like they would have if there was no incentive. They sold the cars close to what they would have anyway and will still have money coming in the next couple of months.

I tried to trade in my clunker, but it didn't qualify. I asked the guy how the program was working and he said, quote "we are like kids at Christmas". THE PROGRAM WORKED!!! Even better than expected. True, many of them don't work well, but by showing that you will not concede this you lose all credibility.

Redman, are you that retarted? Do you think a bank, as tight as credit is right now, will give out a subprime loan when there are people with great credit standing in line? Really, think about it.

Robot,
I agree about the pifall in demand after the program ends. I plan on waiting a month or two and getting $4,500 off the sticker price by negotiating.

Your analogy seems to argue against any stimulas at all - helping in the ST, but bad for LT. I believe stimulas is needed in bad times, just like higher interest rates are needed in the boom times to try and flatten the hills and valleys.

it worked real well for toyota didnt it?

and as several economist have said ..this is a 'stealth' stimulus...wont last and the bubble will burst...

will be known as one of several failed obama programs like the 'help out the homes being foreclosed program...so far a dismal failure...

and did anyone see the pic of the car being destoyed

it was a nice looking corvette

that has to be wrong on several levels....

BL2,
I always took you for a Trans-AM kind of guy.

"and as several economist have said ..this is a 'stealth' stimulus...wont last and the bubble will burst..."

The program offered a quick pic-me-up for the auto industry for a small amount of money. It worked beyond all expectations.

And they took cars with Mexico plates.

So the taxpayer gets screwed for 3 billion to buy Mexico cars from money borrowed from China.

And Mexico is planning a cash for clunkers program--betcha money they won't be accepting US plated cars.

"And they took cars with Mexico plates."

Got a link?

In light of this occassion, I am starting a new program. It's called, 'Cash for Cash for Clunkers for Carbon Credits'. Since this Cash for Clunkers program was so great and wonderful, and it was in a cute, socialistic kind of way, we can just bypass all the gov't stuff all together.

Here's the way it works. You guys give me the money that you would have normally paid in taxes to pay for C f C. Then bring down your clunkers and I'll give you a whole shit-load of carbon credits.

That's right, your own personal carbon credits. As many as you want.

"The program offered a quick pic-me-up for the auto industry for a small amount of money. It worked beyond all expectations."

I think the biggest benefit to this, was the Cities raking in all the sales tax. If by chance there are snags, and the money is not apportioned for the dealers, can the dealer go after the buyer? Thought I heard both parties agree in the contract.

CFC is a microcosm of any government program.

It cost 3 times more than it was 'thought' it would cost.

No, it cost exactly what they thought it would. It was just so successful that they added 2 billion to expand it.

Unlike, say the Republicans' 40 billion dollar Iraq war.
Has it started paying for itself yet?

#40 | Posted by northguy3 at 2009-08-24 07:43 PM

It's more like a trillion dollars, not billions.

Bush's war in Iraq can never pay for the sorrow and grief the deaths of more than 4000 of our military brought to their families, and will take decades for U.S. citizens to pay off to China the money Bush borrowed from them to pay for his war.

But who cares, as it's made Bush and some of his closet war profiteering buddies billionaires several times over. And that's all that really mattered to them in the first place, wasn't it.

No, it cost exactly what they thought it would. It was just so successful that they added 2 billion to expand it.

I love that excuse -- er -- logic. May I borrow it?

"The war in Iraq was so successful, they added another trillion dollars to expand it"

I guess I am. It must be a real bitch giving away money. Giving someone free money was sucessful? Son-of-a-bitch. It was supost to last 3 months!!! How long did it last??? Them damn government weenies shure have a handle on how to give away free shit!! ONLY IT AIN'T FREE DUMB FUCK.

OK, let's see what happens. Several people have called me stupid for thinking this will result in bad loans, but here's my reasoning:

Five months ago I wanted to buy a new car, so I bought one and paid cash. BTW, I traded a hybrid with 100K miles because I did not want to be the first one on the block to discover what happens when a hybrid becomes a clunker. The point is I wanted a new car, so I bought one. No government bailout for my old car, no credit problems since I paid cash.

Now if I had a car that was worth shit and I needed a loan to buy a new one and I had a marginal income could I have done that? Maybe, maybe not. But would a government bailout to provide 20% down payment that I did not have, cause a credit company associated with a bankrupt auto manufacturer; i.e GMAC Financial Services, to justify a loan that they would not have made under other circumstances?

Let's give this 6 months, but my gut feeling is that GM will be back at the table asking for money to cover all the bad loans they made "to support the Cash for Clunkers program".

I'm with you on this red.

son of a BITCH! My 2000 Explorer decided to fuck up today of all days...by the time I picked it up a 8pm, the mechanic discovered I need a new ABS module and possibly new sensors....too late to take advantage of C4C. Looked up the trade in value on Edmunds....$656...fuckin a....

so that most of our new cars in the cash-4-clunkers could come from Japan.

#20 | Posted by rightisright

I think the Cash-for-Clunkers program was a stupid idea that gave a temporary boost to car sales but did practically nothing to help the economy, or the U.S.

You've advocated in the past that Honda and Toyota are providing lots of non-union jobs by making cars in Alabama, where corporate profits go to Japan = good.

Now you say that Cash-for-Clunkers sells lots of Toyota's and Honda's, made in Alabama by non-union workers, where corporate profits go to Japan = bad.

How can both be true? How do you reconcile all these positions? Do most of the cars traded for the program come from Japan? Are most of the non-union cars made in Alabama? Which position is most convenient for you today?

"And they took cars with Mexico plates."

Got a link?

You are being disingenuous? They put in the amount of money and estimated how popular the program would be. It was much more popular than they thought so the added twice that much to it.

Bankrupt? Really?

well yeah...they ran out of money....
if I was need of a car I would probably have taken advatage of it...have to admit that but there is still the results to come out of it that we dont know yet

for instance how much longer will some dealers have to wait until they get paid

will there be a rash of cars picked up for not paying in a couple of months

and they destroyed some perfectedly good cars that a lot of poor and moderate income people would have bought.....

lots of questions still out before calling it the raving success..

and of course there is the point of toyota corola being the best selling car

and did you know that more than a couple of SUVS AND hummers were eligible to be bought with that money....that doesnt make sense if you are pleading the good for the environment case..does it?

'Clunkers' offshoot still on table
Germain among 40 U.S. auto dealers offering trade-in credit in private program
Tuesday, August 25, 2009 3:06 AM
BY STEVE WARTENBERG
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
As the government's "Cash for Clunkers" program disappears, a privately funded sales-incentive program remains under way with the hope of keeping good times rolling.
Germain Motor Co. is one of about 40 dealers across the country behind the Automotive Stimulus Program, which offers up to $4,500 in trade-in credits for the purchase of a new or used vehicle.

The program is funded by the dealers and began about two weeks ago. The total incentive is determined by the fuel savings of the vehicle purchased compared with the one traded in. It ranges from $500 to $4,500.

"Only 10 (percent) to 15 percent of the marketplace was qualified for Cash for Clunkers, and this is a mechanism to expand the eligibility," said John Malishenko, operations manager for Germain.

The Clunkers program was so popular that $2 billion was added to the original $1 billion earmarked, in order to meet consumer demand. It was to have ended at 8 p.m. yesterday, but the deadline was extended until noon today -- but only to allow dealers extra time to file paperwork amid a flurry of activity that crashed government computers.

Perhaps this analogy better fits the bill... Think of a dam holding back water. You open the flood gates to limit the water that can pass through into the valley. Manipulating the interest rates is as though you close the gates some in order to allow the water to back-build while we wait for the rain. In better times, it's as you say - you open 'em up so the dam doesn't break. I see these stimuli as not regulating the flow, but magically creating the rain. However, there's no such thing as magic is there? The reality is they're trucking in the "rain" from China and we tax payers are the ones assigned to dumping the water into the river one bucket at a time... like slaves.

The clunkers program is an illusion. It suits the previous bike pedaling scenario just fine. Nothing happened.

You are correct. They were a success at giving away $3 billion. Hell of a job there brown spot. I could never have done that.

Now ask the dealers how well they like the program. They are hanging out for about $2.5 billion right now.

I guess we should see how many people default on their auto loans in about 6 months before we start saying how good the program was.

If you are going to stimulate the economy, build something that can be used for some time to come. Have people WORK for the money.

"Now ask the dealers how well they like the program. They are hanging out for about $2.5 billion right now."

LOL...and these government freaks wanna manage the ENTIRE health care system in the United States...

"The politicians care mainly about getting credit for the giveaway, not if some hapless dealers are left holding worthless paper when the money runs out."

Ain't it the absolute truth!

Snippy, Your 3 arguments have already been disproved multiple times in this thread. Maybe we should just start copy and pasting to help you out.

"build something that can be used for some time to come"
Like infrastructure? I remember that stimulas package being dragged through the mud worse than any of them.

Pretending this program was an amazing success is hyperbole. We borrowed more money, and a few people got an early Christmas. Better than the bailouts / stimulus because it at least went directly to Americans, but this way of trying to prop up the economy can't last forever.

*wonders how many cash-4-clunker cheerleaders complained about Bush tax rebates*

for instance how much longer will some dealers have to wait until they get paid

While I don't think C4C will be all that beneficial to the economy, this one righty talking point is a bit annoying. As a business owner who has sold a lot of merchandise to various government agencies over the years, I can tell you from personal experience that all levels of government are slow at paying. If you are not aware or prepared for this...if you need fast cash flow, DON'T deal with the government.

I cant wait till I need a kidney.

Would Obama qualify for $4500.00? He sure qualifies as a clunker after 8 months.

The other thing I should add, because they're even worse...if you need fast cash flow, DON'T deal with insurance companies.

Hmmmmm... My buddy purchased a used Eddy Bauer Explorer a few years back from a private party. That Explorer has cross-crossed the Southwest many times, put on 10s of thousands of miles, carrying our camping gear and canoes on a trailer, 6-man raft with frame, ourselves, up and down goat paths to get to the launch sites, etc. Never a problem. Never a breakdown.

What's a Texan doing driving a rice burner anyways?

Heard on the news this morn that around 670,000 new cars were sold under the CfC program.

Not that I am a big admirer of Ford Explorers. I think the interiors are oddly, and in some areas poorly, designed.

I have a '89 Toyo 4WD pickem up stretch, nothing fancy, just turned over 210,000 on this last trip through the Rockies to do the Gunnison. I have replaced the radiator, and various hoses and belts. Other than that, seems like it wants to keep going and going.

Sniper loves wars, but hates programs that exceed expectations.

It ran out of money early because it was so successful you dumbfuck.

I mean really. How can you be so fucking stupid?

It is comical, isn't it? The desperation to 'prove' that anything this admin does is a failure, even when it's more successful than thought of. It's safe to ignore anything Sniper says, as reality doesn't matter to him, just that Obama is bad. Just plain old intellectual dishonesty at its finest.

To Sniper, if you planned on selling 10,000 'Bush is Awesome' t shirts in 3 months, but sold that many in 3 weeks you'd be a failure. Yup, that's right wing logic for ya.

I cant wait till I need a kidney.

yes, those countries that have socialized medicine frequently run in to that problem. I'm sure you could post plenty of lists from places like Sweden, Japan, England, Canada etc where this is a problem.

NOT!

Do you think that if you just say or think or parrot something, that makes it true?

I love that excuse -- er -- logic. May I borrow it?

GoatShit,

You're clearly losing your fucking mind.

I'll pop some popcorn and watch as it all unfolds. God stuff!

You're clearly losing your fucking mind.

I wasn't the one who made that postulation. I just mockingly extrapolated it.

Enjoy the popcorn.
