Socialism is just a word used by the GOP to frighten people. In the 1950's it was communism, in the 1960's it was the John Birch Society and today the Pubs are trying to bring Obama down by using the word Socialism. FOX nation is so pissed as is the Republican Party that a black man beat John McCain. Lets face it John McCain couldnt even keep his facts straight, and his infamous map of the Middleast had much to be desired. That is not necessarily the meaning of Socialism, it is the collective nation paying for services through taxes instead of directly to the purveyor of services. Medicare is a perfect example, so are police protection, fire departmens, etc.
It's a word that has been demonized by the right yet which describes many of the services we take for granted every day in a civilized country.
The work "liberal" was resurrected from the ashes of thirty years of demonization so now the right has shifted to the next word on the list, "socialism." Meanwhile Medicare continues to serve millions of people who who be shocked if you told them their health care was socialist, even though it clearly is.

danni - medicare is funded by employees and employers and meant for people when they retire - it's not like THE PEOPLE put NOTHING into the program - it's like insurance for the elderly, but too many people have used it beyond its boundaries to be effective anymore - how many use it without ever having paid into the program? it is funded through FICA - something every legitimate employee pays into. you act like the government is just GIVING it to people out of the goodness of their hearts. amazing.

I have to disagree with you on the fascism being a right ideology. The differences between Socialism and Fascism are only semantics. And both are to the far left. I will admit that many who claim to be on the right spouse both and many don't even know it. So in terms of reality your partially correct but in terms of ideology your wrong. One of the characteristics of the librarians who are just left of anarchism is that they just want to be left alone. Hence you don't hear much from them until they get really pissed off. I think that's beginning to happen.
