Listen up, anonymous bloggers: You don't get to call someone a "Horsey Face," "ho," "skank bitch" or "#1 skanky superstar" and remain anonymous. A judge ruled Tuesday that Google must reveal the name of the creator of Skanks in NYC, a now defunct Web site that was hosted on its blogging platform and existed for the express purpose of publicly leveling such schoolyard insults at model Liskula Cohen.

OH SHI-

"Back in the days, trolling meant something!

They did it for the lulz: What a horsey-face skank ho!

Liskula Who?

This is GREAT!!

Something needed to be done to stop the bullying and blatant lies that some say on the internet.

People should be held accountable for what they say.

Lisa,

I agree, this is great.

All the name callin is minor torts that should be held responsible.

Hi Money!!

Yes, I'm not talking about the minor changing of peoples names like Jeff mentioned above and there are some posters who take jabs at each other that may sound hateful to some but the two know that is their way of joking/ teasing each other.

That is far different than what I, and others have experienced and I'm glad people are going to be forced to watch what they say!

Hi Innie,

I agree with you on this, people should be forced to be responsible on these blogs.

They wouldn't be so on the street, in public places, which is exactly what these forums are.

Also, putting up someone elses personal information.

Internet bullies stalk others and then feel free to publicize information about them.

There needs to be accountability!

I'll drive 20 mins and blog from Mexico if I have to. If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. The retort wasn't designed for the weak. You can either take the abuse or you can't.

i agree with rasta and clean his clock on a regular basis. he is a lying democrat - but what can we expect?>8]

Liksula Cohen...

She kinda looks like Sasha Baron Cohen. Any relation?

oops! Wrong thread!

OK, IM shutting this window... Sorry.

If they crack down on trolls I don't know what I will do.

Wow...I feel like an up and coming outlaw in the old west who sees railroad tracks in the distance and knows the wild times are coming to a close.

Don't shoot that last buffalo.

Skanks in NYC

Is that like a JeffNDenmark?

People should be held accountable for what they say.

People ARE held responsible for what they hear or read and take for fact or reason. Our current predicament, (non partisan,) is proof of this.

If someone reads something on the internet and takes that as fact and then dies of a result, they deserve it.

Blogging might be your night out pal not mine.

How you equate an anonymous blog with public behavior is a bit of a stretch.

Or Rcade could have a zero tolerance policy and nip it in the bud, after all its his blog.

What about all those Sara Palin lies and smears that he allowed to happen?

My take is if you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen.

What about books and magazines and newspapers and bumper stickers and graffiti?

lol

Whoops!I said lol... don't kill yourself or your family...I didn't mean to say kill....strike that please.

LOL

Remember a few deaths related to "heavy metal music."

Its the music's fault and not the kid that was fucked up to begin with.

"Its the music's fault and not the kid that was fucked up to begin with."

I know you're being sarcastic, as you should. I always thought -- if it's really the music -- why aren't all 8 million who bought the album murdering, instead of just one jackhead?

Trolls Beware: "Internet Not a Free-For-All"

Aw, come on.

Even when I'm cranky or in a bitchy mood I still have to play nice?

#25 - You, bitchy?
That's unpossible!

This is not good.

I think it's interesting that we haven't heard from the 'government is here to help' reichwing nut jobs who are so worried about national health insurance.

They seem curiously quiet about the idea that government is pretty much asking google to spy on its users for it.

"I would have to say the first-place award for Skankiest in NYC' would have to go to Liskula Gentile Cohen," the blogger "Anonymous" wrote in one posting. The blog, since removed, ridiculed the former Australian Vogue covergirl as a "40-something" who "may have been hot 10 years ago", when she was actually 36.

"I would have to say..." kinda' says it all right there. I thought in modern US English, that heading warns its listener that what follows is an opinion. Not to mention, I don't think there's any architecture in place that definitively frames the criteria for being "skanky" is there? The author could've meant anything it's not unlike the semantics our career politicians love to express in DC.
Cyber-bullying? Ever hear of the off switch? Sticks and stones baby. In my opinion (just so there are no mistakes if princess's eyes somehow happen to wander onto this page) the "bully-blogger" might be on to something.

Dont know the details of this case or care much. Stalkers don't need protection.

One of the things that need to happen on the net is some accountability for what is said. Yes, this from Mr Free speech.

Free Speech does not mean you get to make up slander from thin air and present it as fact with the intent of doing harm to any persons life or career.

Like the trolls who think I froth at the mouth. (-; Everyone is a bad ass behind a key board. I miss the days when we looked into a persons eyes and were "accountable" for behaviour and rudeness.

To many sheeple, not enough grown ups, a lack of thoughtful conversation. Spoiled little children that think they are "special" and "intitled". Such sad excuses for human beings. What a terrible legacy they will leave behind. Common since tells us that a generation that thinks everything should be "given" to them will produce NOTHING to hand down to future generation other than slavish dependence. What must it me like to be a man with no pride or self reliance?

Fuck that shit.

They'll have to pry my cold, dead fingers from my keyboard.

It's hard for them to talk with all the dic...I mean feet in their mouths. After all, it's not such a huge leap to go from monitoring what people say in email, blogs, forums, etc to punishing them for it.

This bullshit is the result of the PC crowd having their way. One side wants to sensor people because their pussies hurt. Another side wants to sensor people because they're scared shitless a brown person will blow them up.

OMG was i supposed to register before i went outside?

They'll have to pry my cold, dead fingers from my keyboard.

not only might they have to do that, RK, they'll also have to prove libel, sorry DR members.

ya know, i remember that some ppl, years ago, on the internets would alway act PO'd and state that they won't talk to someone without a name (a non-"handle" name). this seems asinine to me, i mean, ok, so i'll start signing HIdeki, Ichiro or mb Bob Jones, or Betty Black. WTF?

who ARE those ppl? same ones with the guns at the rallies? they want only to exchange IDs not ideas?

now, in TFA, this woman is making typical libel claim (the model/celeb charge)... as TFA says through both side of its face:
a) Listen up, anonymous bloggers: You don't get to ? call someone a "Horsey Face," "ho," "skank bitch" or "#1 skanky superstar" and remain anonymous yes you do.

b) This is definitely a case to watch no it's not: Imagine what a win for Cohen could mean for all the World Wide Web's anonymous trolls nothing, dumbass -- particularly those fond of maligning women's sexual reputations online i see, the FA author is a sexist.

c) In order to win her case, Cohen will have to prove that the nasty insults are false and unprivileged.

and of course that she REALLY is a professional model whose living is damaged from this, she probably made MORE!

so, personally, forget the article, happens everyday: i'd like to stop hearing (reading) these dumb pleas to forbid so-called anonymity.

you can reach me when you have a court order, k? k.

i259.photobucket.com

more litigation..I guess the lawyers have to create more frontiers to sue since caps on medical lawsuits will follow after the health care bill is law.

Free Speech does not mean you get to make up slander from thin air and present it as fact with the intent of doing harm to any persons life or career.

libel laws.

Like the trolls who think I froth at the mouth. (-; Everyone is a bad ass behind a key board. I miss the days when we looked into a persons eyes and were "accountable"...

having pair and the law are 3 different things:

...for behaviour and rudeness.

one person's verbal rudeness doesn't necessarily (often not) justify or make legal another [reacting] physical, violent, behavior.

there is NO law that says i have to be nice guy. no RUDENESS law. if i am rude "looking you in the eye" and you strike me --i assume that is what you meant, YOU GET SUED, and probably definitely ARRESTED.

caps on MEDICAL LAWSUITS

@ #34, what, you want to repeal libel laws?

Liskula Cohen

Never heard of her.

Wot's her biatch?

Some stalker-troll set up a web site specifically to take shots at her?

Well, that may be pathetic but it shouldn't be illegal.

Increased litigation regarding who sed wot about whom on the intrawebs will certainly have a chilling effect on blogworld.

For a time.

Evntually if it turns into too big of a biatch some sites may end up resorting to employing an electronic Terms of Use Agreement stating that you can't sue or be sued over anything sed on the blog before you can start blogging.

Anything short of Hate Speech ie. inciting, advocating or promoting violence aainst an individual or group is Free Speech.

Free Speech is good. K?

Be Well.

What about all those Sara Palin lies and smears that he allowed to happen?

All Palin had to do was go after the buggers and prove they were false. Good luck with that.

Good. Blogs would be a lot better if people's identities were not protected...

Yeah? Well you are a Skanky Bitch! So there!

What the fuck for?

So a celebrity can sue a pauper for calling hiom a name???

You can say anything about a celebrity in the context of comedy.

Fuck this Judge, the case should be appealed, Google certainly has the money.

Yeah? Well you are a Skanky Bitch! So there!

Donnerboy!

I'd respect it more if your real name were behind it. Of course, with a pseudonym, you can pretend you're not still living in your momma's basement, and nobody would really know, except for comments like the one above....

Sounds like (from what I read in the article) these guys stated an opinion of this model. and, that opinion, no matter how distastefull or untrue, is just that, an opinion. I think that this is possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard. This model is actually claiming injury for the opinions of others. What an incredibly stupid bimbo. And, the judge in this case has to be completely brain dead to actually give credence to this...

As I said earlier: I think the absence of comment from all the reichwing brown shirts who hate government health care so much is quite revealing.

Shawn,

Brownshirts were socialist progressives, and therefore, leftists, along with Woody Wilson's thugs, Mussilinis guys, and Uncle Joe Stalin's guys....Now, our Fuhrer has a plan to assemble a thug army...they, too, will be leftists....

idiots...

Thus spoke,

The Nazi meme was a staple of the left during Bush - were you bothered by it then?

Just asking.

The Nazi meme was a staple of the left during Bush - were you bothered by it then?

As much as I detested Dubya, I (still) think the Nazi reference is fodder for idiots.

Hence, "emotionally potent oversimplification".

There's plenty to detest about both W. Bush and Obama thus far, but violating Godwin's Law just destroys any kind of valid criticism.

...a staple of the left...

I consider myself to be socially liberal on the whole, but that doesn't mean I won't consider arguments from the "other side"...for instance, I believe that gun control is, by and large, bullshit.

Also, I seem to be way out of touch because I think we should be strictly financially conservative.

Bring back charters for corporations! Revoke their "personhood" and make them prove that they have some kind of sustainable business model based on the common good!

Same goes for foreign policy...we have enough diarrhea to clean up state-side; I hardly think that aggressive nation-building is a good idea...

Not trying to be a dick, but I have yet to encounter ANYONE who doesn't proclaim to be a fiscal conservative.

...I have yet to encounter ANYONE who doesn't proclaim to be a fiscal conservative.

That's just an illustration of how out of touch the ruling elite is from the so-called "common man", aka the "know-nothing mendicants", as I'm sure we're known to the ruling class.

The owners of this country have their own agenda which is rammed down our collective throats every few years.

Doesn't mean it's consensual...

I sure as hell didn't vote Obama...

As long as we're going to spend billions of dollars at a breakneak pace, why not invest it at home?

America sorely needs a breakthrough...

We need to become innovators in the "next big thing", which is going to be ENERGY.

Both parties are lolligagging around, because they have a conflict of interest in oil.

Time to evolve ideas, people!

America needs a scientific/technological breakthrough that we can export to the rest of the world...we can profit AND lift EVERYONE up at the same time...crazy, right?

That's where I'm at...

...politically, I couldn't care less where the innovation comes from. It's the ANSWER which counts.

...in the interest of having this country survive, though, it DOES need to come from somewhere in America...

Otherwise, we're already second-rate (American students can't even begin to hold their own in tests of scientific aptitude, for instance)...how much more backsliding will we tolerate before we become a bona-fide "has-been"?

What will happen next to deprive U.S. citizens of privacy? First the U.S. pressured the Swiss Banks, USB anyway, to reveal the names of depositors in "secret" bank accounts. And now this decision presages the loss of anonymity on the internet. What's next, a poster ID number?

Parenthetically, weren't some of the Swiss accounts numbered so that the identity of the depositor was putatively unknown even to the bankers?

Watch for the outflow of deposits?

Everyone is "marked" nowadays so that there is no escape. Back in the days of the American frontier, a person could "flee" and start anew elsewhere. Not now. Fingerprints. DNA. Photos. The ubiquitous Big Brother is there looking over all of us.

Zarathustra,

You mean, me pointing out that Nazis were not from the right, but the left, is somehow kneejerk? Really, its simply a fact that many, oddly enough, seem to be unaware of....

The belief that it can't happen again is simply silly, from a historical perspective and a contemporary one.

It's good to see you elevating the discussion by calling me an "idiot", though.

As far as your excitement for "energy"...I share it. But government won't be the driving force for finding the cheapest energy form available, any more than it has been for the 2 million years or so that human-like apes have been walking around....

Want to start an energy revolution? Break up the public school monopoly and start actually educating people...they'll do the rest...

"You mean, me pointing out that Nazis were not from the right, but the left, is somehow kneejerk?"

No, it's just a nasty lie that right wing tools like to put forth. Nazism was a right wing phenomenon closely related to fascism.

***"The lefties seek to promote "understanding" but not to the reality of Islam. They present a bowdlerized version of that benighted religion as if it were the reality, and avoid address of the fact that it continues to function based on the primitive and bloody values of a warrior cult"

The Left tends to accept that Islam is a religion made up of extremist and progressives, just like any other religion in the world. This fact is something that you obviously can't get your head around (or won't) because it doesn't fit your kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out mentallity. To understand that there are Muslims that feel the same way about extremist Islam that you do would deny you and yours the justification of blanket hatred for a people due to their ethnic/religious background and the color of their skin...

This story is a good example of the scism within Islam: The model wants to bring to light the ignorance (as she sees it) of the extreme fundementalist faction of the ruling clerics and extreme Islamic law. The extremists are trying to hold on to their control, so they make an example out of a high-profile figure...

The Left also understands that the US can't go around fixing the problems in the Islam. Muslims must do this. And, there are a lot of them trying to do so...

***"Expansionist Islam seeks to bring you into the umma and under the jurisdiction of the enlightened clerics, who staff the sharia courts and who have all the knowledge necessary, which is gained by studying the Koran"

Yeah, and Christianity seeks to indoctrinate everyone into the fold to be washed by the blood of the lamb of God, to follow Gods laws; which taken out of context can seem pretty midevil. Our country is lead by self proclaimed Christians. And, the two wars we are engaged in at this very moment were started under the proclaimation that "God told (our president) to invade". as far as "effective" religious violence goes America's body count for Jesus has got Islam beat all to hell...

So, if you really think that Islam is evil, and think it needs to be changed: pray for the Muslims that are trying to achieve those very ends. Spewing generalizations and character distortions isn't an effective way to change anything. These only serve to whip up ferver amongst the easily manipulated masses of your ilk, which is why you regurgitate them in an attempt to reinforce your own unfounded position...

***"There is nothing in all of Islam to defend or respect. The people living under Islamic rule must be freed just as we here in the US must be freed from liberalism"

Well, thankfully you aren't just full of the same bullshit generalizations and blanket assumptions that have made Conservatism an impotent skidmark on the political tapistry of America's future history...

There are countries that hand out life sentences for less than that and I personally take six strokes from a cane over life in prison"

Please source me, as I think that you just made that up...
