My dad had a record or two of his. I'd forgotten about him, it's been so long ago. Sometimes it's hard to remember the guy who started it all when so many have followed. RIP.

RIP Les; and thanks for all the great music.

For any of that play, or attempt to play, guitar.. Les Paul was the man! Not just as a musician, but as a person that changed the technical side of instrumentation forever..

RIP, Mr. Paul.....

Up until Les Paul, the guitar's main function in an orchestra was to inform the drummer where they were in the song and to tip the changes.

Bringing the guitar out front as an electrically amplified solo instrument was a popular music game changer, keeping in mind that European players like Django Reinhardt were relatively unknowns here at the time.

He mostly gets credit for reinventing the guitar, but it's his multi-tracking innovations that people tend to forget about.

94 ! What an old fuck! He was costing us way too much in health care. I am glad he is dead.

Sincerely

Obama

RIP Les.

Guess I'll have to have a beer and crank up my Les Paul Custom tonight to honor the man.

As a drummer, I couldn't imagine recording on one track. Would be a disaster. Thanks Les!

Just kidding. Fuck him. How hard is it to play a fucking guitar, anyway? For fucks sake, his parents named him "Less". Surely they didn't expect anything from him, and I'm sure they were pleased he met their expectations. He played guitar...wow. Consider me unimpressed.

How many Ron Paul supporters are sending in consolations do you think?

As I heard it, it was the Kinks with "You Really Got Me Know" and a blown speaker, but that could just be urban legend.

I guess there aren't enough political threads on the DR for the 'haters' to spew their special brand of vitriol. Why they feel the need to bring their bullshit on to this thread, is beyond me.

Aren't there any town hall meetings today?

I know that, according to Vanilla Ice, it was my town that created all the bass sound, and I am sorry for that. We tried to kill all the bassers before they got out of the city limits, but those low riders go much faster than one would think.

And yes, I know Hairbrain101 was trying to be funny...consider me unimpressed.

What kind of a fucking idiot waits years to bring it up? Did you suddenly grow a pair or are you on the rent to own plan?

I often find 101 to be quite humorous, and since I don't have a taste for kool-aid, I even agree with him on some issues. I just didn't find his or wisgod comments particularly humorous or appropriate for this thread. Nor is it appropriate for me to continue with this petty bickering, so let's get back to celebrating Les Paul.

You think THIS is bad, you should have been here for the Hunter S Thompson thread. You must have thick skin when one of your idols dies around here.

I agree. Woo Hoo, that old talent-Les fuck is dead!

Hip Hip Hooray! D-D-D-D-DEAD!!!!

He tried to pull his own plug but his arthritis plagued hands were too weak, so he suffered need-LESly, and because of that I laugh, and celebrate.

The she was wrong Kanrei. I guess you missed my "What does a man with a 12" penis have for Breakfast" joke.

"You must have thick skin when one of your idols dies around here"

I know Kanrei, it's just when it comes to my musical heroes, I can be as annoyingly self-righteous as the neocon fundies are about Jesus.

Ok, but did I get your name's origin right? Wisconsin G-d, not W is G-d?

Yes sir.

Mr Soul,
It was hard to bite my tongue when Hunter died. He is one of my biggest influences in my writing and one of the few authors I can honestly say I have read almost everything, including letters. You can guarantee there will be one tasteless joke per celebrity death and odds are it will be 101 making it.

My bad. I hate when I am called "she" here and I know it is a common insult, but I honestly thought you were a XX and not an XY.

Kanrei -

Cali,
I have no speakers at work, does your link say it was the first use, or does it simply show distortion being used?

It didn't say. The clip was one of the old original versions of the Kinks singing the song and it was being played at what looked to be some indoor concert or club. Check it out when you get home tonight.

I'm a huge HST fan as well kanrei. I suspect the style and tone of most of the hateful comments directed towards him, were ironically, inspired by his gonzo genius.

I seem to recall it had something to do with him blowing his head off.

I hate when I am called "she" here and I know it is a common insult...

Yeah, I don't get it. Why do guys on here always think the biggest insult they can give another guy is to refer to him using feminine nouns and pronouns and/or attribute a guy to having various parts of the female anatomy?

You must not think the female anatomy is all that bad 'cause you're always talkin' and hopin' you can get your hands on one. lol

Got ya, Kanrei.

And FF for Wisgod!

With comments like those of WizGod and 101Chairbored on this thread, it makes it hard to really convey any type of condolences for a man who shaped music historically and helped to contour the future of the art through nothing more than his love for music, and for the instrument he played.

I guess the sad part about it is the indignation one feels when a person or persons of such inconsequence and utter forgetability attempt disparage the memory of an artist that touched the lives and souls of so many.

I believe an argument can be made for Link Wray being the father of distortion.

Royce: So in your head you're tall and skinny?
Martin: 190 pounds of muscle!
-Weirdsville

As a kid, I used to watch Les Paul & Mary Ford with my dad who was a guitarist. I'm 62 now. Dad is gone. But I have great memories of that era.

RIP, Les, and thanks for the years!!

Everbody knows you measure circumference, not width.

Did I just say that?

Did I just say that?

Nope, don't worry. You did WRITE it however.

You know what I meant! Math has never been my strong point. LOL

California Math:

Two eights= one quarter
Two quaters= one half ounce
Two half ounces= one ounce
16 ounces= one pound

That is about it.

Everbody knows you measure circumference, not width.

#109 | Posted by Hagbard_Celine at 2009-08-13 05:15 PM

That in conjunction with the length gives you a very loose approximation of surface area.

I measure by expression.

Wide eyes is long
Squinting is not so much
Laughing means leave.

"That is about it."

Not quite.

3.5 grams=1 eight

3.5 grams=1 eight

#116 | Posted by nullifidian at 2009-08-13 05:23 PM

We are talking California Math, so really 2.5 grams = 1 eighth =D

"so really 2.5 grams = 1 eighth"

Not the eighths I buy. :)

Surface area... I thought it was an estimate of volume?
Lol I didn't mean to hijack... Well... Maybe I did.
Re: california math: I remember dating this girl from NC when I was 21 (the equivalent of catharine zeta jones in that john cusack movie)... She said let's get a half quarter and I said dou you mean an eight? She looked at me for a moment and said "I think so."

Who buys eighths? >:)

At NY prices? Most people.

Then I have one word for you:

MIAMI

I knew there had to be a good side....I mean I have heard other people talk about it. I honestly don't know what it costs, or even what we are talking about. Didn't Les Paul die or something?

www.javahandicraft.com

"Who buys eighths? >:)"

Well if you want to try 8 different strains you buy 8 eighths instead of 1 oz.

Its strictly business in NYC, nothing kind about it.

Makes me miss portland when I think about it.

Hey Hagbard, are there still services like Weed Delivery in NYC?

So I hear. But I think its sketchy and even more expensive. I don't want those sKetchers in my house.

But at least I never have to rely on a calculator to do most math problems like so many kids today have to do. Try and get them to figure out how much change to give back to you out of a $10 bill if their fast food cash register all of the sudden went on the blink. All you get is a wide-eyed stare unless a sign can pop up on their register telling them exactly how much change to give back. God forbid they had to figure it out themselves on paper.

#133

Man there aint no such thing as a 3 finger lid anymore.

Perhaps an even more profound impact on the world of music was his invention of the multitrack tape recorder for recording studios.

#137 | Posted by CalifChris"

If you give them change after they've input whatever bill/bills you handed them to round up so you'll get only quarters back as change it's apparently as mind boggling as the Theory of Relativity to all too many young people. Sad. "New Math" isn't as good a teaching method as "Old Math".

Yeah, I hear ya. I was just curious about how much more one has to pay for home-delivered herb.
#130 | Posted by mrsoul62 at 2009-08-13 05:51 PM

I pay the traditional $40 for one eighth, but when something really exceptional comes through I dish out $50. I deal with very few people ever and we are all friends so the money goes to good folk - no sketchers welcome at this dwelling. If that's just un-doable I send a person to retrieve, but the last time I did a quantity myself was when I was ambushed by two inquisitive police officers. I was totally stoned and the container was awfully stinky. The leads pale blue eyes were a work of art, shaking my influence momentarily. Never again.

Delivery is best, but they can't just leave instantly unless you want to attract any observers, so I have cake & coffee on the ready.

Still the prettiest city on the planet though...

"Naw, not as much. It's been taken over by homeless youth and the trendy Pearl-ites..."

That is too bad, I used to go there practically every day. The homeless kids was something that bugged me while I was there, that people in their early 20's would beg on the streets all over the place... Sp'ange-ing we'd call it (as in "spare change?"). I was barely making my rent and feeding my self, but I never resorted to that.

And those kids had dogs... and kind bud! Heroin too a lot of the time.

I remember the day I caught a roommate, my ex girlfriend mentioned above in #119, begging for rent money. I left shortly after that.

Pioneer Town Square is a hassle - the homeless kids can be vicious to visitors who recklessly feed them. I try to be cool, but seeing how they take advantage of everyone makes it an ugly place, especially at night. However, in my current apartment we have gangs working for street dealers so I get to run the entire gauntlet to safety.

Portlanders have the best parties - particularly when we blend the political officials with the sweet tarts and local beer mavens. I just made my first visit through North Portland yesterday for the organic farmers market - four rainings, five tomatoes and two rugby games later and I'm totally moving there ASAP. Great people, lots of dykes on bikes and good nature. My kind of home.

Nope.
Link gets credit for the "power chord", but fuzzy, distorted tone goes back to guys like Willie Johnson
en.wikipedia.org and Pat Hare
en.wikipedia.org
It happened accidentally at first. An amp would fall off the car or down a flight of stairs and get the fuzz. Then, they figured that if you soaked the cone and/or slit it with a razor, you could get it.
