"Make sure you get plenty of sleep before going to court. Clifton Williams didn't and he's been sentenced to six months in jail for yawning. "I was flabbergasted because I didn't realize a judge could do that," [said] Williams' father, Clifton Williams Sr.,"... "It seems to me like a yawn is an involuntary action." Williams, 33, attended his cousin's July hearing at Will County Courthouse in Joliet. His cousin, Jason Mayfield, pled guilty to a felony drug charge. As the judge sentenced Mayfield to two years probation, Williams let out a yawn, an involuntary faux pas in such a formal setting. Circuit Judge Daniel Rozak thought the yawn was criminal and sentenced Williams to six months in jail, the maximum penalty for contempt of court without a jury trial."

YAWN

~Chickenfelcher~

"It seems to me like a yawn is an involuntary action."

Ya right. He did this to be a little prick and show off in the court room to the rest of the gallery as to illistrate that the judge's ruling was nothing to even be conscerned about. Pure in simple. People yawn all the time in court rooms; they just have the decency to cover their mouths and do it without the flare and noise this guy did. Its like shoing up for court in Sweat Pants a beer t-shirt, just plain stupid.

"He did this to be a little prick and show off in the court room to the rest of the gallery as to illistrate that the judge's ruling was nothing to even be conscerned about."

Being obnoxious is not a crime. This judge is just an authoritarian asshole.

Judge should be removed from the bench for blatantly abusing his power. In a just world, he'd also be beaten severely and denied his freedom for a while.

He works for the people, it was never the other way around.

Anyone who defends this guy is a pussy.

Being obnoxious is not a crime.

Yes, in a court room it is. I believe they call it "contempt" or something like that.

"Yes, in a court room it is. I believe they call it "contempt" or something like that."

Sounds like you're an authority-worshipping pussy.

Contempt of court is a court order which, in the context of a court trial or hearing, deems an individual as having been disrespectful of the court, its process, and its invested powers. Often stated simply as "in contempt" or a person "held in contempt", it is the highest remedy of a judge to impose sanctions on an individual for acts which excessively disrupts the normal process of a court hearing.

A finding of contempt of court may result from a failure to obey a lawful order of a court, showing disrespect for the judge, disruption of the proceedings through poor behavior, or publication of material deemed likely to jeopardize a fair trial. A judge may impose sanctions such as a fine or jail for someone found guilty of contempt of court. Typically judges in common law systems have more extensive power to declare someone in contempt than judges in civil law systems.

In civil cases involving relations between private citizens, the intended victim of the act of contempt is usually the party for whose benefit the ruling was implemented, rather than the court.

A person found in contempt of court is called a "contemnor." To prove contempt, the prosecutor or complainant must prove the four elements of contempt

Its the word of the law, man.

I'm old school anti-establishment. Not like the Partyline "as long as he's MY parties Guy its ok" boot lickers. take your assumptions as cram'em.

Good thing he didn't fart.

I've been to court in Will County, for a speeding ticket.

The bailiffs are very abusive to the people waiting for their time in front of the judge.

They yell at anyone, for even the most minor thing.

If your name is called, and you don't move fast enough, they yell at you, and threaten to throw you out of the courtroom.

Seems most of the collar counties around Chicago, are like this.

DuPage County bailiffs are also bad, but there a speeding ticket can cost you $600.00. No lie.

Thanks for more reasons to avoid Illinois.

Part of fighting what/who you percieve to be your "enemy" is to know every little procedure they can call you on and Never giving them the chance to do so by acting stupid with shit like this. I'm with you, to the extent that the 6 months is excesive but, even a idiot should know that his little stunt was gunna place him in contempt. He just didnt figure this judge was going to go the deep end of the allowable statute. Ya its crazy, but guess what its legal.

Kinda like when folks are arguing abortion.(which i support the womans right to choose FYI, BTW.) Ya its awefull but guess what; Its fucking legal. Deal with it.

"Thanks for more reasons to avoid Illinois."

Thats not quite fair, ZATOCHI. Once you get south of that living Hell that is Chicago this state is actually pretty laid back and nice place. Southern IL, especially the Shawnee National Forest is just plain great for hiking, fishing, and rock climbing. Not to mention the Wineries that dot the Southern Half of the State, I would recomend BLue SKy wines to anyone who enjoys wine.

GotTruth,

I've only been to O'Hare, mostly to change planes, U of Illinois at Chicago Loop and Fermilab. I'd never move there because of the gun laws.

What did they say in that movie "Find Me Guilty?" It was something like: "You can insult a judge's wife, burn his house to the ground, and kick his dog, but NEVER criticize how he runs his court."

"I'm old school anti-establishment."

If you're making excuses for an asshole judge who claims yawning is an instance contempt of court worthy of the maximum penalty, then you are clearly not anti-establishment. You are in fact a craven pussy who fears all authority. You'd probably suck a crossing guard's dick if he told you had to.....

"If you're making excuses for an asshole judge"

I did no such thing.

"is an instance contempt of court worthy of the maximum penalty"

And you obviously didnt bother reading my post as I stated in plain english: "that the 6 months is excesive". I'm thinking that your reading comprhension is so bad that you would think Huckelberry Finn a racist book.

Your both (NuLL & SULLY) are absolute paper gangsters. Internet tough guys who would piss their precious little panties if you ever had to actually apear in court for anything other than a traffic ticket. I say this because of you obvious ignorance of "contempt of court" can mean. Don't believe me, fine, go prove me wrong and go into your local COurthouse and do what this moron did. While a judge is reading a sentence just bellow out a excesive yawn and Be sure to come here and let us all know how that goes. A Court room is one place you DO NOT want to act like a damn fool.

Okay, well, first of all, it's "pure AND simple".
Second, from where do you get your power to know someone's intentions from large distances?

Troll away.

Hey Tom why else would one yawn so loud the freaking judge and whole gallery could here him?

Troll away.

I never said I'd tell off a judge in his courtroom. I said a judge who takes away a guy's freedom over a bodily function is an asshole who is abusing his power. Having that opinion doesn't indicate one way or the other how I'd act in front of a judge.

Yawning is not acting like a damn fool. Its a bodily function. The only one acting like a damn fool was the judge. But you become such a mewling little shitstain at the mere mention of an authority figure that you can't seem to wrap your head around the fact that this guy didn't do anything.

oh and forgive me for not minding my grammar on a internet blog.

"paper gangsters"

That's a new one I hadn't heard before. LOL

"Yawning is not acting like a damn fool."

In this case its like answering your phone at full volume in a theater only there are legal ramifications instead of someone punching you in the back of the head. SO what, Ya its a bodily function(So is pissing, so your point is NULL) but id does not have to be doen with full volume dude. It can be done with restraint and at a low volume. His volume and animation is tel tale of his intent.

I'm getting the feeling that trying to explain to you how to act in a court of law is like explaining Calculus to a kid with Downs Syndrome: a waste of time/excersis in futility.

Six months sounds harsh but from my stints in jury duty, I'm amazed how poorly people present themselves in court. One would assume that it's just common sense to now visibly yawn, whine in a shrill voice, interrupt a judge, and to at least look reasonably presentable (tucked in shirt, don't huff/roll eyes, no hands not in pockets, no gum, etc.).

Good to see you around again, Katieberry.

Even if we assume, that his yawning was a blatant attempt to disrupt the court. 6 months is WAY harsh and completely out of line. A night in lockup would of been more reasonable. But 6 months??? wtf is that about??!?!

The judge is a disgrace to the bench.

People can be rude in court with their cell phones.

6 months --wow--could you imagine what this judge's dog goes thru?

The judge needs a vacation--seriously.
