Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida said Friday he will resign from the Senate as soon as a replacement can be appointed, leaving the seat more than a year before his term ends. Martinez, the only Hispanic Republican in the Senate, wrote in a letter to supporters, "My priorities have always been my faith, my family and my country, and at this stage in my life, and after nearly 12 years of public service in Florida and Washington, it's time I return to Florida and my family."

Another scum sucking repub quits GOOD!

This will be awkward for Crist who wants to run for the seat himself especially with Ros-Letinin asking him to appoint an hispanic. His biggest competitor in the primary will be Marco Rubio who is hispanic.

If you listen closely you can actually hear the wheelz coming off the rep party.....

LM

Cut and Run!!!

Then again, because he voted for Sotomayer, he was never really a Republican, right?

I agree Danni, weird timing from a purely political perspective. Seems most likely that Crist wins the thing next year just from what I've heard but this puts him in an uncomfortable position.

Expect Crist to appoint another repub and someone who will agree not to run in 2012.

Will Crist appoint a Log Cabin Republican?
Oh, my bad, I forgot, he got "married" when he was being considered for Vee Pee.

Every odd. I knew he was not seeking re-election, but I thought he was going to finish his term. Could this be GOP payback for Crist's backing of Obama early on?

He wanted the chance to vote for Sotomayor then out.

seems risky. But not beyond the party of NO. They do seem to relish Pyrric victories. If this looks like a way of screwing him,Crist could appoint some extreme whackjob rightie that has no chance of getting elected
and let the Dems win it.

So, what's the consensus? Female prostitute or another man?

OMG! There is going to be less diversity in the U.S. Senate now! I hope they don't appoint a white male!

Sincerely

Democrats

Republican, so, definitely another man.

Mrk Blond for U.S. Senate!

Actually, Mel doesn't strike me as a real wingnut, so maybe he just got tired of hanging out with the real thing up in DC.

He could change Parties, but then he'd be dating women again.

I think Mel learned from the Terri Schivo affair. He was on the wrong side of it and saw the light and became a better Senator from that point on. I am actually not totally thrilled to see him go.

Apparenty Marco Rubio was being pressured not to seek the nomination, he wasn't the favorite candidate of the establishment. This could be a way to screw Rubio if Christ appoints someone else.

My guess its dan.

Hahahahahahahaha. Another GOPher quits. Hahahahahahaha. Welcome to the Democratic States of America. i am almost starting to appreciate the impact/aftermath to having Bush/Cheney in office for eight years.
From the lack of rightwing posts, it is obvious that even they understand that there is no good way to spin this. Their Party is dying.

"This could be a way to screw Rubio if Christ appoints someone else."

Then I say thank you Sen. Martines. Rubio is a right wing loser.

moder8, One-party states are overrated. You may not realize it now, but a vibrant and health opposition is needed to keep the party in power in check.

"My priorities have always been my faith, my family and my country"

Sex scandal coming soon, or drugs, maybe both.

So, what's the consensus? Female prostitute or another man?

Porpoise.

I glad to know it's okay to make an unprovoked mockery of someone who is a minority as long as he's a Republican.

unprovoked

Not familiar with his record, eh?

"I glad to know it's okay to make an unprovoked mockery of someone who is a minority as long as he's a Republican."

Er...are you a new comer here???? Virtually everyone gets mocked here, it's what we do. Republicans mock Democrats, Democrats mock Republicans, Independents mock everyone.

Crist WILL appoint a strong Hispanic candidate AND run against the other senator when he is up for re-election, thereby gaining additional Hispanic support.

With his approval ratings in Florida, Crist will be an odds on favorite to gain that seat. Net LOSS to Dems of one seat!

DOGEN makes a possible point there though unseating Bill Nelson would not be easy. He got 60% of the vte in 2006 and would not be up for reelection til 2012.

i'll so not miss this guy.

Hey Jackass, who ties your fucking shoes? I doubt that you are capable of something so hard to do.

Incumbent seats are usually pretty safe. With so many repubs dropping out up front, its not going to be an easy 2010 election for them.

"...it's time I return to Florida and my family."

Whenever politicians do the old "I want to spend more time with my family" routine, you know there's a big scandal brewing. Will it be a "tappity tap tap" adventure or time for another hike along the Appalachian Trail? Stay tuned.

Maybe he's sick? Crist will win. I live in South Florida and he's not that much of a right winger. He actually has some common sense and will at least consider other points of view. He was very visible whenever a hurricane hit us. lol. He'll be a better Senator than Martinez. Or maybe Martinez missed being a big fish in a small pond.

ONe thing you can say for Charlie Crist is that he is exceptionally neat, dresses exceptionally well, has a great tan and always looks great.
He hasn't been nearly as bad of a governor as Jeb and, at least, had the common sense to welcome stimulus money unlike the idiots in several other states.
