The U.S. Marine Corps has banned Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and other social media sites from its networks, effective immediately. "These internet sites in general are a proven haven for malicious actors and content and are particularly high risk due to information exposure, user generated content and targeting by adversaries," reads a Marine Corps order, issued Monday. The Marines' ban will last a year.

There's going to be a quite a few young Marines who aren't going to be too happy when they hear this news.

The Marines: Internet pussies since 2009

I'm sure you'd rather the Chinese have unlimited access to our nation's military networks, traitor.

Yeah, because some poor Jarhead trying to get laid via Facebook is going to disclose the nuclear codes.

I gotcha.

I thought they did this like 2 years ago in the name of security.

they can still access these site with their own private computers and laptops. They are just blocking them from Instalation computers and hardware.

Any decent network administrator should block those sites. They have no business value.

Unless your business is in retail and you want to involve social networking in your marketing plan.
Best not to be so narrow-minded.

Nothing new here the Air Force network has had these sites banned for more than 3 years.

Craigslist (some parts) still work, however.

They can sign on at the Internet cafes.

In other words: don't let exchanges of ideas confuse the troops from their baby killing missions...

The White House and Obammy said the War Against Terrorism and jihadism is over.

Who is the Defense Dept afraid of normal American taxpayers and patriots?

They have no business value.

They block them at my job.

For a while the admin blocked the retort. I thought I was done here for sure.

I only got out of the service as late as 1998 and I still had to send letters. Email was non-existent on a Destroyer at that time.

I can't imagine luxury of not only email, but news that wasn't filtered by Armed Forces radio.

"The White House and Obammy said the War Against Terrorism and jihadism is over."

Guess I missed this major news story.

The policy makes sense.. while sympathetic to the young marines (we have family friends deployed with the marines now) there are very reasonable security concerns with having someone twitter their military activities..

"In other words: don't let exchanges of ideas confuse the troops from their baby killing missions..."

Do you have the USMC confused with Planned Parenthood?

Studies have said these things "infantilize" the brain, creating people who need constant stimulation and affirmation for their self-esteem.

Property of the US government is what they sign up for; that's why I could never join up.

We just put out a policy letter to the guys in my unit about what they could and could not talk about on SNS while deployed. I expect the actual government systems will block use, but we can get access to the civilian network, even at fairly remote base camps. I am buying a laptop this week end so that I can stay in touch and do "my own thing" while deployed.

A "friend" of mine was a Marine, in the Yankee White program, the personal protectors of the Presdient at times like at Camp David, had to go through a series of filtering questions:

If you're in debt--you're disqualified

If you have ever done drugs--you're disqualified

If you've been drunk in the past 6 months--you're disqualified

If you're not a virgin--you're disqualified

To the Marines, character matters and character has consequences.

Any decent network administrator should block those sites. They have no business value.#8 | Posted by mysterytoy at 2009-08-06 08:55 AM | Reply

A local university computer administrator said he thinks 95% of all university bandwidth was used by facebook.

WTF?!?!

The Secret Service has similar qualifications. Their logic is, they don't want you worrying about anything except guarding your charge.

Of course, personally I'd be worried about being a virgin, but that's just me.

You are a no respect having piece of shit. Your posts prove that you are on the fringe and belong to the 10% of people who make up the extremists of the left. People like you are pathetic and worthless.

Twitter, Facebook, MySpace are for fags anyway, Marines have no business going to these sites, they should be out killing terrorists, not trying to pick up teenies.
