The gnome is ambivalent looking to me. The elbow is crooked, not straight, and the hand is curved like he is waving. He does not have a dedicated look on his face but looks like he is pondering gnomish runes. Plus, he's gold. It is art. The time has come for Germany to deal with their past in a way where they are trying to work through their issues and not just shove them in the back of the closet.

I liked the way some of our neighbors handled themselves over non-P.C. lawn statues when they moved in.

They're African-American, and some of our older residents had those black jockey statues out front.

Instead of getting upset or getting in anyone's face, the new family procured a jockey statue, repainted it with a white face, blond hair and blue eyes, and installed it out front of their house. Not a word was said.

They're very popular people around here - a sense of humor is always more attractive than whining.

A friend's mother collects black American caricature memorabilia. Most are cutish, but the salt and pepper shakers of black children eating watermelon has perplexing meanings.

When I was in middle school I offered the next door neighbor kids a couple of our sugar baby watermelons - we grew a patch and regularly gave away anything extra from the garden. The kids were excited and brought them inside, but their father immediately got irate and had them returned to me. I didn't understand until later in high school that they are Jehovah's Witness and what their father meant when he stated that I was an "evil racist sodomite". The kids were not allowed to even talk with us and we could no longer play together. They eventually moved away without even a goodbye. He might have understood me better at our previous house - my uncles are black panthers and would never have tolerated his attitude.

They were from the South, I believe someplace Mississippi. I have no interest in visiting, ever.

Regarding Gnomes.. they are possibly the origins of the Druid. How ironic that a Jew would be offended! Also, the Gnome in question is quite obviously mocking the 3rd Reich, not ennobling it. Mr. Hamburger should get sober before making further public statements.
