Yeah, well, fuck you, too.

It's C O R N Y N, Rogers.

Now I'm sorry I said good morning to you.

I think I had him confused with Hume Cronyn.

Good morning Mr. RCADE.

Or, esteemed colleague, Jessica Tandy

Hume Cronyn's tons more fun.
'Batteries Not Included' is one of my favorite movies.

I've met Cornyn.
What an asshole.

I appreciate you coming to this discussion again this morning, Danni. Do you disavow your earlier remarks that a Democratic woman would reach better decisions than a Republican male?

if it doesn't look like the picture, she's gonna screw up your order...

Nope.

POSTED BY DANNI

Anybody see Conan's Sotomayor "numchuck" informercial?

Google or youtube that shee...

Sotomayor is a Corporate shill, willing to set individual rights aside for the sake of commerce or merely to brush black marks within the Courts under the rug. She will strengthen the Conservative gang of four in their battle against individual rights for the sake of Corporate profits. At least two prisoners were denied their day in Court and Freedom based on trivial technicalities renders the "empathy" criteria meaningless.

From Democracy Now
Story of Wrongfully Convicted Prisoner Denied Appeal by Sotomayor Excluded from Confirmation Hearings.
Jeffrey Deskovic, a wrongfully convicted prisoner who spent sixteen years in prison until DNA evidence proved his innocence. In 1997, nine years before his eventual release, he appealed his conviction to Judge Sonia Sotomayor and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. The court dismissed his appeal without even considering his innocence claim because paperwork from his lawyer had arrived at the courthouse four days late, as advised by the Courts misinformed Clerk.

Here's another one, profoundly disturbing:
Martin Armstrong, once a well connected economics-based theorist, was privy to the corrupt inner workings of our federal government and financial system. He has given talks and written papers about Goldman Sachs' influence on the U.S. and world governments and financial systems.

Armstrong developed a proprietary economic forecast model, with his own source code, that became sought after by the CIA and Goldman Sachs after a few of his major economic predictions occurred spot on (to the day).

Well shortly after refusing to answer questions about his model or make it available to the aforementioned parties, he was severely prosecuted. Had he just wrongly confessed to what he was being charged, the most severe sentence he would have received under federal guidelines would be 6 1/2 years. However, he was imprisoned for 7 years alone for contempt, which carries a max 18 month, as per federal guidelines. He nor family members, colleagues, or associates were allowed to testify on Martin's behalf in court. He has received no fair trial to this day.

Well, he finally pleaded guilty with the understanding that the 7 year contempt charge imprisonment, would be counted as time served. Instead, they renigged on their end of the bargain (a common practice with Federal Prosecutors) and gave him another 5 years for fraud.

Sotomayor was instrumental in keeping Armstrong in jail for Goldman-Sachs. This woman is a heartless bitch who will providee that fifth vote to suppress individual rights in favor of more concentrated money and power.

"Do you disavow your earlier remarks that a Democratic woman would reach better decisions than a Republican male?"

To be precise I said Lesbian Democratic Women of Irish ancestry who drive Mini Coopers make better decisions than right wing tools.

Speaking for the Democratic majority, I think we can all agree with that, Danni.

What if that Lesbian Democratic Woman of Irish ancestry drives a Nissan Kube? Or a '76 Chevy Impala? (The latter seems less likely. Though if the lesbian in question is particularly butch...)

Camden Yards is awesome. Drove by it on a recent trip to Baltimore and wished the team had been in town.

"To be precise I said Lesbian Democratic Women of Irish ancestry..."

Hmmmm...no wonder I get a mental image of Rosie O'Donnell every time I see your name. Are you really Irish?

Absolutely, recovering Catholic, one of seven kids.

YOU mean something that GOES A LITTLE LIKE THIS

I welcome the comments from my esteemed colleague rcade who has a wonderfully AMERICAN story in his own right

Born to sharecroppers and raised as the only white child in the mississippi delta
as he rose up form those humble beginnings to recieve a first rate education from the sisters of the roman poor in south bumfork virginnia....
he kept his SHOULDER to the grindstone and rose to a position of prominence at the firm of DIddly, DIDDly and BO.....when he knew that a journalistic career was his real calling

SOMETHING LIKE THAT perhaps...

GET IT
GET IT

the firm of Diddly, DIddly, and BO

get it

OOPS SORRY IT WAS a firm in lousianna

DIDDLY, DIDDLY, AND BEAUX

Serious question.

How and why did Al Franken get on this committee?

All of the members are either lawyers or have had rather long distinguished political careers Franken does not fall into either category.

That's where he was appointed.

and besides.........what better way and place than to present the "NEW FACE" of the democrat party.

I mean with a rock star president, why not showcase a clown and a comedian in the senate..OOPS>.is that a oxymoron??? LOL

and it reminds of best line I have read on the subject

WHOSE NEXT DEMS???? CARROT TOP....
I am STILL laughing at that one

COME ON PEOPLE

diddly, diddlty and beaux...

get it

I know you are out there..I can hear you typing

How and why did Al Franken get on this committee?

I don't know how he scored such a sweet committee assignment, but it might be due to Sen. Kennedy's unavailability and the desire to get Franken on something important.

That's where he was appointed.

Thank you ol' wise one.

What a dickhead.

Is Sotomayor babbling now, or have I lost the ability to make sense of these hearings?

Sen. Ricky Ricardo?

Sen. Tom Coburn evoked a 1950s TV show in a quip responding to Sonia Sotomayor's scenario about what he might do if she -- hypothetically, of course -- attacked him.

"You'll have a lot of 'splainin' to do," Coburn said, to laughter from the crowd and Sotomayor. What he said -- and how he said it -- was a riff on a Hispanic television character, Ricky Ricardo, whose accent is now widely considered a broad parody.

In the famous 1950s TV show "I Love Lucy," the Cuban-American bandleader Ricardo (played by the equally Cuban-American bandleader Desi Arnaz) would often admonish his scatterbrained wife, Lucy, by saying she'd have some "'splainin'" to do. The phrase, "Lucy, you have some 'splainin' to do," has become part of the popular culture.

Calling Coburn out for this might be going too far -- those who know him say he often speaks like this -- but it was hard not to notice his inflection and choice of words. At the very least, it suggests a tin ear -- particularly when you're speaking to a woman who may become the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice.

news.yahoo.com

I would have been babbling by the second day. The Dems ask milktoast questions and the GOPhers ask gotcha questions.

Babbling may be the best strategery.

Too which Sotomayor responded...

OHHHH Tommmmy... WAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

It's hard to do the patented Lucy wail in print.

If only she had of said that! I would have paid to see it. Plus, it would have livened up the proceedings and given the media a weeks worth of news.

that post came across like maybe Tommy and Sonia were having a good ole time until Tommy connected about 2 inches too low

It's Franken time! Nice intro.

Must be really important if Al Franken is on the committee. Right now he's talking about the TV show Perry Mason. No shit. Perry Mason. She's no Perry Mason. Wasn't he gay?

Al Franken says he is amazed that Judge Sonia Sotomayor said earlier in the day that she decided she wanted wanted to be a prosecutor from watching the television show "Perry Mason," "because the prosecutor, Berger, lost every week."

Then he says her nomination is "pretty cool."

What the fuck is this guy doing on the judiciary committee?

Al's pocket Constitution has a picture of Soupy Sales on the cover.

At least he is asking some questions in a manner that allows her to answer them.

I love all the agita coming from the right over Al Franken. It's like they never heard of an entertainer going into politics before.

I've heard of it, and it always sounds ridiculous. Franken can be a Senator if that's what the people of Minnesota want, but for the people who run the senate to appoint him to the committee on the judiciary when he has no legal background is pretty unbelievable.

Joe just wishes he had a degree from Harvard.

I guess Ronald Reagan would beat out Bonzo for the title of, "entertainer". I guess.

Or like they have never seen a clown in Congress before!

Franken just walked Sotomayor into a terrific exchange on the right to privacy and the meaning of words in the Constitution. The best exchange -- in her favor -- yet. Score one for the funnyman.

lol! Good to see Franken say something funny again now that he's seated.

Dorky just wishes he could address one of my points. Don't hold your breath, Dorky.

yeah! Franken finally made a funny!

Dorky just wishes you had a point other than the one that fits your hat.

That exchange at the end was funny. Stuart Smalley would be proud of him.

How nice, a Franken dick suck fest.

Later.

Besides, everyone knows how funny jurisprudence is.

Every Democratic senator gets at least one top committee assignment. LBJ started that tradition when he was Senate Majority Leader. More info:

"Democratic leaders who put Franken on the Judiciary Committee say they did so because of his smarts and his engagement in public debate over the past three decades as author and radio host.

Joe,
Did you expect a legitimate answer from some dude who chose to name himself after the water head from Life goes on.

there is a presumption that those most qualified will be the appointees.

Then you may presume that he is most qualified according to those who are doing the selecting. And I don't remember them having to ask your permission. But, please do go ahead and bitch about it if it makes you feel better.

Oh Chairpoodle said dickbag! Ouch!

The answer would only have intelligence to those who actually have some. That would rule you out. So, I guess the answer wasn't meant for you.

Why do Republicans fear Al Franken so much?

You always seemed above this type of stupid retort, rcade. What's next? "Why does _______ hate America?"?

"Every Democratic senator gets at least one top committee assignment"

So why, in particular, the committee on the judiciary? Is there anyone else on the committee with no background?

"He's been involved, even though it was from a radio commentator's viewpoint, with the big issues," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill."

LOL. Does that moronic statement from Durbin address the fact that Franken has zero legal experience and therefore is unqualified to evaluate judicial nominees? No, but it's hilarious how you pretended that it does.

Joe - does your moronic statement address the fact that a Supreme Court Justice is not required to be a lawyer or have "legal experience"?

"You always seemed above this type of stupid retort, rcade.

Goldman Sachs?

Montecore thought Harriet Myers was qualified...

Yes, I did. To vacuum the Oval Office anyway, and maybe refill the paperclips.

You always seemed above this type of stupid retort, rcade.

It was a joke, son. You can't say Sarah Palin around here without being accused of fearing her.

Joe thought Harriet Myers was qualified.

Why does Sarah Palin Hate Alaska?

"The Bill's were a joke before, but nopbody paid any attention to us, which was good. Now we're going to get more press because of TO and more people will be aware of how pathetic the franchise is."

The quality of NFL teams vary wildly from year to year and because players move around, it takes half a season for some teams to gel. I don't expect the Bills to be good but if they made the playoffs it wouldn't shock me either. If they go on a run and TO plays a big part you'll be rooting for him to make plays even if you still don't like.

Shit, I have to root for A-Rod to get hits. I loathe him and would rather see him off the team but if he's playing and I'm watching the game and wanting my team to win, I have to hope he does well.

Oh, and just to stay on topic, Sotomayor looks like she probably has really bad breath.

Is there anyone else on the committee with no background?

#99 | Posted by JOE

Yes.

Dems
Herb Kohl
Dianne Fienstein
Ted Kaufman

Repubs
Chuck Grassley
Tom Coburn

These people never practiced law but have been elected politicians for many years. The exception being Ted Kaufman who ranks 97th in seniority in the Senate, but he's worked in politics forever.

I hope he does. I put $20 on the Bills to win the Super Bowl this year. I can't remember the odds I got, but they were a longshot and will pay handsomely if they pull it iff.

I believe Coburn, Grassley, Kaufman, and Kohl are also not lawyers.

"Joe passed the bar once. Drove right by it.....

You're right, MonTrigCore, great point you made. There is no "requirement" that SC Justices be former judges, lawyers or have "legal experience" but one would certainly hope that they had some. I guess that makes Franken qualified to be a Supreme Court appointee too. Great point!

Are you equally upset that Coburn is on the J-Committee? Grassley?

Another flunk out from Basics of Writing 101.

Read her entire speech, and then get back to us.

Unfortunately that concept will never exist in reality in any courtroom, and if you read the entire speech I believe she says as much she contends that judges should try to put their bias and experiences to the side but its pretty much impossible.

I kind of agree with you on this. The second half of the speech is actually pretty good, but the first half is basically a Latina power speech just read the speech and insert white every time you see Latina and Latino and you would cringe.

I know she was playing to her crowd, but still.

bigot Rush Limpbarker has been using "s'plainin" forever.

between the "s'plainin" remark and KKK Sessions referring to the PR ancestry of that other judge... these ppl really ought to be exiled to some uninhabited tiny pile of sand in the middle of an ocean, and forgotten.

that these morons are Senators is simply... mind-boggling.

Joint Statement

Wayne Lapierre, Executive Vice President, National Rifle Association
And
Chris W. Cox, Executive Director, National Rifle Association - Institute For Legislative Action
On
Judge Sonia Sotomayor's Nomination To The United States Supreme Court

Other than declaring war, neither house of Congress has a more solemn responsibility than the Senate's role in confirming justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. As the Senate considers the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Americans have been watching to see whether this nominee - if confirmed - would respect the Second Amendment or side with those who have declared war on the rights of America's 80 million gun owners.

From the outset, the National Rifle Association has respected the confirmation process and hoped for mainstream answers to bedrock questions. Unfortunately, Judge Sotomayor's judicial record and testimony clearly demonstrate a hostile view of the Second Amendment and the fundamental right of self-defense guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.

It is only by ignoring history that any judge can say that the Second Amendment is not a fundamental right and does not apply to the states. The one part of the Bill of Rights that Congress clearly intended to apply to all Americans in passing the Fourteenth Amendment was the Second Amendment. History and congressional debate are clear on this point.

Yet Judge Sotomayor seems to believe that the Second Amendment is limited only to the residents of federal enclaves such as Washington, D.C. and does not protect all Americans living in every corner of this nation. In her Maloney opinion and during the confirmation hearings, she deliberately misread Supreme Court precedent to support her incorrect view.

In last year's historic Heller decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees the individual's right to own firearms and recognizes the inherent right of self-defense. In addition, the Court required lower courts to apply the Twentieth Century cases it has used to incorporate a majority of the Bill of Rights to the States. Yet in her Maloney opinion, Judge Sotomayor dismissed that requirement, mistakenly relying instead on Nineteenth Century jurisprudence to hold that the Second Amendment does not apply to the States.

This nation was founded on a set of fundamental freedoms. Our Constitution does not give us those freedoms - it guarantees and protects them. The right to defend ourselves and our loved ones is one of those. The individual right to keep and bear arms is another. These truths are what define us as Americans. Yet, Judge Sotomayor takes an opposite view, contrary to the views of our Founding Fathers, the Supreme Court, and the vast majority of the American people.

We believe any individual who does not agree that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right and who does not respect our God-given right of self-defense should not serve on any court, much less the highest court in the land. Therefore, the National Rifle Association of America opposes the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the position of Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

"It is only by ignoring history that any judge can say that the Second Amendment is not a fundamental right and does not apply to the states."

Or by ignoring Supreme Court precedent, as in Presser v. Illinois.

So if the Second doesn't apply to the states, then none of the others do, either; Genius, sheer genius.

Take it up with the Justices who decided the case, don't blame me. I don't even agree. But if you want a judge that rules based on established case law and doesn't make up new stuff, she did just that.
