The Chicago Cubs might file for Chapter 11 in order to speed their sale by bankrupt media company Tribune Co., sources told Reuters. If they file, the Cubs would become the first team to declare bankruptcy since the Seattle Pilots went belly-up in 1970. "It's pretty certain that they will do it," said a source, who asked not to be identified because the sales process is continuing.

Jeez, if you can't make money on a pro ball team, what can you make money on?

Oh, I forgot, it's the Cubbies.

Professional sports are a waste of time and money.

Milton Bradley's fault.

Fitting, considering they've been bankrupt of any skills for a century.

Professional sports fails for the same reason all sports fail = censorship.

You never heard of the roman gladiatorial games going bankrupt... just the roman empire.

Professional sports are a waste of time and money.

That's what they're for.

This wouldn't have happened if Chicago had Community Organizers!

This is totally bullshit! Bankruptcy was created to protect businesses who ran into cash flow problems and needs immediate protections from creditors.

It is not to make a better deal for when your company is up for sale! This is abuse of the bankruptcy laws and I hope the judge sees it that way.

"Jeez, if you can't make money on a pro ball team, what can you make money on?"

A lot of them are in trouble, from what I hear. Overpaid players and costs inherent in glitzy new facilities are forcing ticket prices to rise to levels unaffordable for fans.

How can this happen to a baseball team from Chicago, the home of our Dear One?

HOW'S THAT CHANGE THING WORKING OUT FOR YOU CHICAGO?

2009 payroll for the Cubs is $134,809,000, third highest in the league.

1. Carlos Zambrano - 18,750,000
2. Alfonso Soriano - $17,000,000
3. Aramis Ramirez - $16,650,000
4. Derrek Lee - $13,250,000
5. Ted Lilly - $13,000,000
6. Kosuke Fukudome - $12,500,000

And what is baseball, and all pro sports in the US, if not a business?

Team spirit, solidarity, all that rot?

Hail the Corporation!

Hail the Corporate Employee!

Wanna cheer for someone? Cheer for Lance. Yeah, he's making a bunch of money. But this is through his own personal achievement, not because he extorted some team for more bucks: "I'll take my ball and go play over there then."

Cubs suck. Cards rule.

If they file for bankrupcy, shouldn't their assets be sold? I mean Dereck Lee and Fukidomo should fetch a buck or two.

Yup.

TO HELL WITH THAT DRUG ABUSER LANCE ARMSTRONG

I mean Dereck Lee and Fukidomo should fetch a buck or two.

Yup. Sell Wrigley at auction. Take any silverware from the trophy case and put it on e-Bay.

They want to file bankruptcy as if they were person gone-broke because their wife got cancer, let 'em. Just make sure we treat them the way a family is treated in chapter 13.

Steven Gerrard turned down 20 million in extra salary to stay with the team he supported as a kid.

not because he extorted some team for more bucks

Armstrong's USPS contract was worth around 300 million. Spare us the Robin Hood routine, please. The guy is a proven doper and an epic self-promoter.

We're already building ball parks for these professional spoiled brats, owners not just players.

...and they are providing a long term study of the health effects of steroid use....

So I suppose taxpayers will have to bail these fuckers out next. The rule is pay the top of the pyramid first, fuck everyone else.

If our educational system put as much into educated people as they did athletic programs maybe we wouldn't be 28th in the world in math and science.

"Take any silverware from the trophy case "

Um, that cub-board is bare.

So I suppose taxpayers will have to bail these fuckers out next.

I just hope to hell Obama isn't as big of a baseball fan as he is a Car Enthusiast.

Well, that 1908 trophy has probably appreciated a lot in value. It is so rare, after all.

True, true.

Can we bail them out?

Well I hope this affects their playing. They ALWAYS pull ahead of the Brewers after the All Star game!

f the brew crew. the only good thing they got going is the sausage race, and even that's BS. chorizo s/win every time!

Steaming:

My friend's daughter was the one the player hit with a bat several years back during the sausage race.

I love those races.

But I love the Brew crew more!!

i remember chuckling when that happened. can't remember the player's name, but he got some flak for that and other incidents around the same time.

seriously, how can the Cubs file for Chpt 11? i'm no bankruptcy attorney, but the Cubs sell out all non-matinee games and they're one of the top-five valued MLB franchises. near as I can tell, this team/venue is a cash cow. are they allocated a share of the Trib Co debt, enough that renders the franchise insolvent?

He's only got one, but he has more balls than you.

"The guy is a proven doper..."

Verified and validated evidence please.

The SAME problem Baseball has is the very SAME problem Lance Armstong has.

Baseball took to long to take care of THIER problem and they are suffering the financial conquences now.

Bicycle Racing did not take as long to tackle the drug abuse problem. Lance got away with it.

So? You think Lance was the only one? Sounds like he cheated fair and square to me.

Professional sports are a waste of time and money.

No one spends and wastes money like an athlete. They practically pump money into the economy.
