I've been shooting since I was 8 (1968). I've taken and taught every firearm safety course and hunting course in my area.

This kid violated rule # 1: ALWAYS be sure of your target. There is no way a hunter should ever kill a "bear" as it crossed a hillside a couple of hundred yards away and then it turns out to be a hiker.

Crazy a 14 year old can operate a rifle but can't drive. They might want to increase the age to 16 or even 18. Not that it would have helped hear but maybe he would know how irresponsible he is. The hunting age should be moved to 18. It is an old law from the time when people needed to hunt for food. Why should people have to trust the judgement of a 15yo let alone a 14yo for discharging a deadly weapon?

Legally the best they could do is hold him until his 18th birthday. Which I suspect is what they should have done.

The kid can't be responsible for shooting someone. His older brother, he's off the hook too. The kid's parents, they have no culpability here....every 14 yo needs a gun... And we all KNOW "guns don't kill people". So this poor woman must have been killed by karma, or god, or whatever....lighting strike for all we know.

A cop buddy of mine told me the best way to kill someone and get away with it:
Invite them hunting, wait 'till you must cross a fence line, and shoot them in the head as they climb over. The amount of brain dead people "accidently" killed in this manner per year is staggering.
