Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A teen hunter who shot and killed a hiker he mistook for a bear has been sentenced to 30 days in juvenile detention and 120 hours of community service. Tyler Kales, then 14, was hunting with his older brother in August when he shot Pamela Almli, 54, as she trekked on the popular Sauk mountain hiking trail north of Seattle. "You did something so wrong that day and no one can ever undo it," said Almli's sister Gail Blacker during sentencing.

I have heard of deer hunters and bear hunters, but a teen hunter? The one he got was a little old.

Anyone see the movie "Cabin Fever" when that dude shoots the homeless guy with the dog because he thought the guy was a squirrel?

Excellent movie.

Is that the same movie where a mentally retarded kid who is chained to a front porch flips out in slow motion over pancakes?

This kid made a kids mistake and the adult hunting with him should have been held accountable as well.

I've been shooting since I was 8 (1968). I've taken and taught every firearm safety course and hunting course in my area.

This kid violated rule # 1: ALWAYS be sure of your target. There is no way a hunter should ever kill a "bear" as it crossed a hillside a couple of hundred yards away and then it turns out to be a hiker.
There is NO excuse.
Absolutely none.

Hahah, yeah I forgot about the pancakes kid. Once that kid bit the infected dude on the hand shit went sour.

I can't remember much of the movie, honestly, except for the pancakes kid, at which point I decided it was a comedy. I have a vague recollection of a makeout/foreplay scene with some uncomfortably graphic audio, too.

"This kid made a kids mistake and the adult hunting with him should have been held accountable as well."

If this kid were black he would have been tried as an adult and sentenced to 15+ years.

mistaken for a bear? Was she walking on all fours?WTF?

Crazy a 14 year old can operate a rifle but can't drive. They might want to increase the age to 16 or even 18. Not that it would have helped hear but maybe he would know how irresponsible he is. He shouldn't be allowed to hunt for another 10 years. I personally would never hunt again if I killed somebody.

There was no adult with him.

Where did his rights come from?

The hunting age should be moved to 18. It is an old law from the time when people needed to hunt for food. Why should people have to trust the judgement of a 15yo let alone a 14yo for discharging a deadly weapon?

Go ahead gun nutters have at it.

He shouldn't be allowed to hunt for another 10 years.

He shouldn't be allowed to own a firearm unless he can demonstrate that he can tell the difference between a human-fucking-being wearing a backpack and a furry-fucking-bear.

No excuse. The sentence is too light.

....this is another in a long line of ridiculous excuses for American Justice rooted in political correctness and business greed.

I'm having a hard time finding my outrage. There are too many people on earth anyway, and that hiker broad was old.

This kid made a kids mistake and the adult hunting with him should have been held accountable as well#4

So what you are saying is that of you are in the car with your 16 y/o daughter and she accidently kills someoine, you should be held reaposible also?

Get real.

Accidents happen princess.

#16 - Yeah, accidents happen. La dee da. If you were the family of the dead hiker you'd be singing a different tune.

Gee, if only a happier outcome could have resulted from his shooting his gun....like a dead bear. Yay! for dead bears. Hunting really sounds like a fun sport.

There is no right or wrong about this. A tragedy by all means. We should all hope we do not die like this. You cannot fault the kid.

There are too many people on earth anyway, and that hiker broad was old.

Hey mofo, I'm pretty sure I was here first, so what were you saying about too many people on this earth?

Good reminder to wear your orange!

DXLINGER....This 14 year Old Killed Human being, what the hell do you mean you can't hold this kid responsibility??? If that was my Mother this kid would be much safer in Jail than roaming the forest again!!! You are to fucking stupid to be believed, one can only hope that you are just kidding.......

Saddest thing is he has to take hunters safety curse. WTF??? He is going to be allowed to posses a fiream?? At least that dipshit from cleveland who ran over the woman will never be able to drive again. This kid should never be allowed to ow a firearm again, period!

"So what you are saying is that of you are in the car with your 16 y/o daughter and she accidently kills someoine, you should be held reaposible also?"

It depends was she driving with a blindfold on?

That is what this fucking idiot was doing, shooting a blind target. Never had much exposure to guns myself, but I do remember my dad telling me never shoot what you can't see!!

LM

This is a tragic story, but there's another side to the coin.

If you're a stupid fucking hippie from Seattle that like to drive your Subaru wagon to the mountain on the weekend and commune with nature and eat granola and shit, exercise a little common sense and don't do it during hunting season.

Yes, the guy with the firearm needs to be 100% sure of his target.

But if you've ever had the displeasure of seeing the kinds of nasty-ass, unshaven, hemp-clad bitches that pass for "women" in the northwest, its not hard to understand this kid's specific instance of confusion.

There are too many people on earth anyway, and that hiker broad was old.

It is statements like this that are starting to wear on me. How do you debate with intentions of common reason with comments like these?

I am beginning to think that this site is not for me.
Thank you for your time.

Yes, you can. Sterilization to keep his redneck hillbilly genes from entering the population would be a good first start.

I'm saying you're old, and basically nothing more than a waste of good natural resources. Do the right thing.

I'm beginning to think the same thing. Please leave.

54 isn't old

You're right - at least not "Vernon-Old." It's more like "elderly."

A tree limb falls on you ---- that's an accident!

A Deer Jumps out in front of your car ------- that's an accident!

You Shoot a Woman thinking she was a "bear" ----- That's Just Negligence!

That is more than this person got.

"a man convicted in a crash that killed three motorcyclists cannot be sentenced to jail on traffic charges in which fines are usually issued.
Fifty-one-year-old Gary Butler, of Des Moines, was driving a van on June 22nd, 2002, when he crossed the center line on U-S Highway 30 near Chelsea and hit six motorcyclists.

Three of the motorcyclists were killed. Three others were injured.

A state trooper's report said Butler probably fell asleep.

Butler was found not guilty on three counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of serious injury by vehicle. He was convicted of failure to yield half the roadway and failure to maintain control.

Tama County Attorney Brent Heeren asked the district court to enhance the sentence to beyond the fines that are usually issued to the maximum sentence for simple misdemeanors, which is 30 days in jail and a 500-dollar fine.

Butler claimed he could not be sent to jail because Heeren failed to give notice that he had caused a death or injury.

The district court agreed with Butler and did not impose a jail sentence. Butler was fined 70 dollars."

AMEN!!

I've been a hunter since age 14. I've NEVER seen a human that even remotely resembled a game species. I hope that he loses his hunting privileges for life. I don't even want someone that stupid hunting with a slingshot!!

For those who didn't read the article, there were no adults with the hunters. Funny how the "personal responsibility" crowd changes their tune when one of their pet issues is involved.

Legally the best they could do is hold him until his 18th birthday. Which I suspect is what they should have done.

Not true. Jak is Bi-bovine, with both steers and cows on his fornication menu.

Don't hike in the woods during hunting season. If you do, wear hunter orange like the hunters do.

Yes if my 16 year old daughter purposely aimed her car at the other car and the "pulled the trigger"(accelerated).

Try thinking before attempting inane analogies. Cupcake.

"Funny how the "personal responsibility" crowd changes their tune when one of their pet issues is involved."

My fave on that was Bill O'Reilly. TDS had footage of him talking about Bristol's pregnancy, claiming you can't blame the parents, and then cut to footage of him talking about Jamie-Lynn Spears where he states the blame belongs squarely on the parents.

Isn't this a red state sport "hunting" colliding with a blue state recreation "hiking".
At minimum they should have strict season rules for hunting liberal hikers. and they should have a size and age limit too. Too bad liberals don't appreciate when you catch and release them either ...they just make laws saying only Indians can do it.

How awful and sad for the deceased's family and the kid will feel guilt forever.

I wonder how many here who are raging against the teen are really just anti-gun trolls?

Probably got the light sentence because he didn't gut her...

I'm willing to bet it isn't nearly as many who are here saying 'accidents happen' only because it involves a white kid with a gun who was 'hunting'.

"I wonder how many here who are raging against the teen are really just anti-gun trolls?"

Yeah, its not like the kid killed anyone or anything....

Sheesh.

The kid can't be responsible for shooting someone. His older brother, he's off the hook too. The kid's parents, they have no culpability here....every 14 yo needs a gun... And we all KNOW "guns don't kill people". So this poor woman must have been killed by karma, or god, or whatever....lighting strike for all we know.

A cop buddy of mine told me the best way to kill someone and get away with it:
Invite them hunting, wait 'till you must cross a fence line, and shoot them in the head as they climb over. The amount of brain dead people "accidently" killed in this manner per year is staggering.
