Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Saturday, July 11, 2009

In times of record-high foreclosures and Treasury Department scrambling to shore up loan-refinancing initiatives, the Prosperity Gospel can sound as if it comes from preachers who live under rocks, not in mansions: "God wants to give you your own house," big-cheese pitchman Joel Osteen announced in 2007's Your Best Life Now, which he penned in an economic Indian summer of a bull market and excited homebuyers. " 'How could that ever happen to me?' you ask. 'I don't make enough money.' Perhaps not, but our God is well able."

Osteen is everywhere these days. You see his coiffed pate smiling on Good Morning America, at the new Yankee Stadium for its first nonbaseball event, on the cover of Texas Monthly's ideas issueall in one week.

What Jesus said about money:

1) It's not really that important.
2) It fools people into thinking they need nothing else.
3) You shouldn't worry about having any.

Most Americans take the secular view of money, however:

1) There's little or nothing more important.
2) You don't have a real life unless you have a lot.
3) Worry about it constantly.

Most Americans take the secular view on violence and sexual behavior, also. Given these things, why anyone is worried about Christianity controlling one's life eludes me.

Osteen will be the next closeted freak to wind up on the evening news with his upper lip encrusted in white powder.

1) It's not really that important.
2) It fools people into thinking they need nothing else.
3) You shouldn't worry about having any.

Need I remind you, Zed, that Jesus believed the end of the world was imminent - no need for money on earth when riches will be found in heaven.

What a racket! You can't get your money back if the priests are wrong. Which they are.

Ray always responds when his household god is attacked.

Pot, kettle.

"Jesus believed the end of the word was imminent..."

So He was real? That's progress.

What Jesus said, more than once, concerning the End Days was that He didn't know when they would occur.

I think what you're referencing is the statement made by Christ is that some hearing his words would be alive when the Kingdom of God arrived.

If He was speaking of the Church, then his prediction was dead on---Remarkably so, given there weren't more than a few score of His followers when He said that.

If He was referring to a physical state of some sort, then it's worthwhile to consult modern science to see how an all powerful Being, as God is said to be, can always manipulate the laws of nature as we now understand them to make that happen in---Well, let's say the next five minutes.

"Pot, kettle..."

Pretty funny, actually. Except that even Ray agrees his god isn't able to care one way of the other what either of us do.

"The next five minutes..."

That might actually fit Biblical prophecy---That everyone is going to be flat-footed surprised when the last day arrives---I plan to go out to lunch in a moment and Ray plans on making sure the specific weight of gold hasn't changed.

Well, we are in the last yuga. Which has maybe a few hundred thousand years to go ~ Zed before the next wink of God:>)

If you're still poor it just proves you aren't right with God. If you are sick it just proves you aren't talking to Jesus enough.

I think what Zed was pointing out was that the "prosperity gospel" is not the gospel message preached by Christ. While non-Christians would like to make a blanket statement that Christianity is a fraud based on tele-evangelist failures of the past, they need to take a step back and realize what the gospel really is about.

To further illustrate, many Christian leaders have taken a very strong stand and have warned Mr Osteen in the past about his exclusively "itching ears" preaching while glazing over issues of original sin, the devil and eternity. So, everyone out there that doesn't care to address the real issues will further marginalize Christianity based on false assumptions.

Karma can take awhile to get burned off once seeing & experiencing God is one's only goal in life.

Making money while doing so falls under the Law Of Assumption.

Enjoy:>)

9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, "God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess." 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, "God be merciful to me a sinner".

14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Osteen needs to reread the word, mmmmmm?

Karan Thapar's breakthrough: Law of Assumption
By SudarshanWeb

While Newton may have given the world the fundamental laws of motion, Karan "Sudden removal of Modi" Thapar is finally on his way to codifying the laws of the anti-national pseudo-liberal English media. In an interview with Arun Shourie, self appointed Congress party/Gandhi family spokeperson Thapar gave the world the "Law of Assumption". Based purely on this law, Karan Thapar makes the startling claim that the bulk of Indians money in Swiss banks is actually legal. The fundamental basis of the "law of assumption" is that the BJP is always wrong and the pseudosecular intelligentsia is free to cook up arguments based on whimsical notions which are mostly in lockstep with the Congress party/Gandhi family's ideals. While all available indicators point towards Indians being among the largest hoarders of illegal money, Karan Thapar seems quite amazed that this may be actually true.

What fucking god do you think I believe in?

Pluto. That is, you observe his rites.

It is perplexing (to me) how Christians can let their current lives go to "hell" while believing they'll be "rewarded in Heaven."
It sounds like a giant "scam" foisted on well-intentioned believers.

Who stood (stands) to gain from this view?
Certainly not Christians, at least not in the "here and now."

Intentional mistranslation or honest mistake doesn't change the fact Christians get the short end of the stick.

........bingo !........

......that's what all religions are........

Joel Osteen is a repulsive crank. You know in your heart someday his "ministry" will unravel as a fraud. He has an eerie Jim Bakker smile, too.

Joel Osteen is a repulsive crank.

Actually he's a feel good guy, though he repeats himself through the whole show.He doesn't even ask you to join his church, just a bible orientated church.

love his stories and I'm an athiest

And if you don't buy his books he doesn't even make any money.Nice cathedral/arena though

Any passages to backup the "danni" doctrine? Or are you just talking from your hate?

Somebody apparently hasn't gotten to the "s" part of the dictionary yet. Everyone waits with bated breath for that momentous moment.

Actually, Midtowncoboy (are you that guy who plays guitar in Times Square?) I gotta side with the quote you pulled from Danni.
The earlier form of Puritanical Calvinism did believe God rewards the elect materially. Later Protestantism has pretty much thrown that to the side but it has a downright weird revival in the non-puritannical Osteen. It is a small leap from his doctrine of prosperity to the Calvinist God rewards the elect.
Full disclosure: I am Catholic, but studied a lot of New England history. Also, I don't believe any religion promises happiness here, at least the major religions. Heck, we start with the premise mankind screwed up and the world sucks because of that.

The momentous moment? From the same folks who brought you the repetitive repeating repeater?

A Fool and His Money are Soon Parted.

"The momentous moment? From the same folks who brought you the repetitive repeating repeater?"

Yup. The Department of Redundancy Department.
