I always suspected the KGB had something to do with such a boring writer winning a Nobel. His dispatches, if written in his literary style, were probably used to induce comas.

Sounds like he was NOT a very good spy. Maybe he was just doing research for one of his stories? Anyway, I am sure the righties tighties are all thinking how sad it is that it is too late to properly waterboard him. Hey Rthugs...maybe we can still do some "enhanced interrogation" on his daughter though!

The key to understanding Hemingway comes once you realize he cut his teeth while being paid by the word.

Danforth, that would make sense if criticizing Dickens, but Hemingway rejected that--he was all about "one true sentence."

We all have lot's of words, but knowing how to put them together is the art. Hemingway was the best writer in the 20th century.

Anybody who says He was a KGB agent better get ready to feel the sting of my car antenna.

He even wrote a story about himself committing suicide. It's called, 'The Three Day Blow'.

"he was all about "one true sentence."

That went on from here to next Tuesday.

"Hemingway was the best writer in the 20th century."

in the words of the dude, thats like your opinion man

i think hemmingway was boring as hell

i've read a couple of his novels and didn't really like any of them

i think he was a better short story writer then a novelist.

of course, thats like my opinion dude.

Yah, and that Shakespeare clown. Shit, who the fuck talks like that these here days?

"who the fuck talks like that these here days?"

Sweat not, LetUs, I did intend it so.

I was at Ernie's house in Key West last week and the six-toed Soviet cats are doing just fine.

Does it still have the Soviet Nuclear Sub parked in the bathtub?

lol @ Danforth #9.

Oops, I'm sorry...

No, but his rubber ducky had a red star on its ass.

"The Old Man and the KGB"?

Dang, that their just shows y'all that book learning don't do nothing at all fer nobody. All that fancy book learning do is makes folks communests and sochallests and leberalls like on the PMSNBC like that sob Kieth Oldbermann. Sarah The Barricuder Palinator done gots it reicht when she was talking on getting rids of them libraree books that wasn't good for the USA USA USA. If'n book learning was so wonderfull then Sean Hannity, Al-Rushboo Limball, Glenn Becks, Sarah Barricuder Palins would have thems all kinds of book learnings. Sarah Barricuder Palin done gots her a book learning certification in the fine art of Communications and she do real good at the communicationing of her Capitalisms and democracies and them chant slogans like DRILL THE BABY DRILL, USA USA USA, and KILL THE A-RABS AND TERRORISTS. Seems like to me that folks all might want to think on getting thems a book learning certification like the Palinator to gets on Communicationing about the USA USA USA and drives them leberalls and sochaleests and PSMBNCers crazy with the fancy skill of book learnign Communicationing. So we be needing us a new chant abouts the needs for the book learning like AL-RUSHBOO, HANNITY, GLENN BECKS AND YOU DON'T BE NEEDING NO KINDS OF FANCY EDUCUMACATING TO BE ALL SMART!!! Then follow that up with more USSA USA USA!!! And then a WHITE POWER TO THE TEE PARTAYS!!! And then a nother new slogann chant of COMMUNERCATE SARAH COMMUNERCATE!!!! COMMUNERCATE SARAH COMMUNCERATE!!!

Another chip away at those who sneered at McCarthy....facts are inconvenient at times, aren't they. Personally, I love his books, but the American Left is standing on cracked, clay feet....

You mean the McCarthy who lied about several aspects of his war record, was consistently inconsistent about the precise number of Communist agents on that secret list of his, and was overheard telling a friend several weeks before the Wheeling speech that he needed a rallying point for his Senate career or else he faced being voted out? I won't hold my breath for his vindication.

As for Hemingway, he's my favorite author, but I fully understand that he's not for everybody. Loved "A Farewell to Arms." I get something new out of it every time I read it.

Do yourself a favor TinyElvis write shorter posts maybe somebody might read them

Danforth, have you actually read anything by Hemingway? Have you read anything by Faulkner? Now talk about long sentences?

Have you read anything by authors, American or otherwise, of the Victorian age? Now talk about long sentences?

There are many things one can find fault with in Hemingway's work (and his life, if you wanna play that game), but length of sentences? Longwindedness? Really? I'm flabbergasted.

McCarthy was as anti-American as a human being can get. He was against Freedom. All Freedom. Free Speech especially. He wanted to turn America into a fear filled society that spied on their neighbors like Nazi Germany and Stalins Russia. If this POS is your hero---you belong on the other side in the next war.

If Americans want to be communists, that is their choice as free people in a free society, just as they can be KKK or republicans.

Hemingway was to writing what the Minimalists like Flavin were to art - useless.

McCarthy was a stooge.

The Venona intercepts showed that there were communist spies holding jobs throughout our government, and McCarthy still couldn't find any.

FWThom, though I disagree, is addressing the acknowledged style of Papa Hemingway. (Hemingway useless? I guess we'd have to define "useful" in the context of literature and writers. Certainly, the received wisdom is that the writer in question was tremendously influential. It is possible to not like someone's writing and still see his or her impact or quality.)

Oh, and Roy Batty--great moniker!

Freshly Whipped Thom. I always misplace my car antenna when i need it most.

This is like saying Abraham Lincoln is like Sarah Palin because they are both politicians. There's that whole 'good-bad' paradygm.

I look forward to your new book, 'It's only Art when I say it's Art'.

Lippy,

I plan to hang my dirty underwear in the National Art Museum and everyone will declare that it is wonderful art. I may also publish a book with 2000 blank pages and declare it minimalist literature. Everyone will marvel.

Minimalist, huh? 2000 pages seems a bit much. I wonder if 200 pages of nothing would be more or less illuminating than 2000 pages of nothing?
