A temp worker at a Camden, Pa., chocolate processing plant died this morning after he fell into an eight-foot vat that was mixing and melting chocolate to be used in Hershey's candy. Vincent Smith II, 29, of Camden, was standing atop a platform and tossing blocks of solid, raw chocolate when he fell and was fatally struck by a mixing paddle.

from the article

"He somehow slipped and fell into the vat," he said.

"Inside the vat, he was hit by a piece of equipment called the agitator that's used to stir, and that killed him."

Mr Laughlin said the vat at the Cocoa Services Inc plant was around 8ft deep.

Poor guy didn't stand much of a chance between being batted around by the agitator at the same time he was submerged in simmering hot chocolate liquid.

This was at a plant in Camden, NJ.

...........sweet..........

This is part of the new Hershey "organic" chocolate campaign.

Crisis

I was going to make a Ooomp Loompa reference but decided against it. Esp. after seeing it happened close to where I live.

Tragedy.

Hopefully his family will get some peace.

.....his body was returned to the family yesterday.....

....in twenty-seven tastefully wrapped gift-boxes...

Wow. Life IS like a box of chocolates.

He should have yelled FIRE!

After all, yelling CHOCOLATE wouldn't get anyone's attention in a place like that ;-)

OCU

I have a fatality claim I pay benes on every year.

The employee was working a lumber mill. He was up about 20 ft above what they call a "pulper" The pulper is about 15 feet deep and was running at the time.

He had gone around back of a pump where they were fixing a pump. His co-workers heard a BANG and the dude was gone.

After a minute or so someone thought they saw coveralls in the pulper. It took another minute or so to run up to the control panel and shut off the pulper. They then had to drain the pulper because all the access doors were at the bottom ( as they should be). Once the pulper was drained ( about a 2 hour process) they went in and found him. Docs said almost every bone in hsi body was broken or crushed and that he probably died almost instantly.

Horrible accident, Briwo. Hopefully he didn't even feel it if it happened so quickly.

Briwo--you do WC claims?

Muffy wants to file a brain injury claim she got while filling out a job application....

Awful accident.

Why can't workers be tied off when on this "platform"?

Just horrible. I didn't hear about this in the MSM today. But I sure did hear about MJ and his fight to be buried at his ranch. :P

haha

When will the MJ stuff end?

It needs to get over already...

Thank you!! I'm sorry about he's dead and all but seriously - do we need to hear about it every hour on the hour?

No matter what you think about the dude... can i just get my news back? Please.

Won't be too long now 'til someone files an eight figure lawsuit against Hershey after finding an unexpected "nut" in his candy bar.

Brings new meaning to "Death by Chocolate" ... I always thought it was a dessert....

I hate for all that chocolate to get ruined. Maybe the guy had an allergic reaction.

What a shitty way to die.

Yeah, we get it. You don't like Michael Jackson, it can't be overwith soon enough. He died only days ago, they organized a public funeral and the private one is underway within a fucking week. You've got some nerve spattering that crap at the helpless media machine, whoring itself for you and your faithless waking nightmare. They only want to sooth the erotic discomfort. Let them whore to you too. Let MJ's death symbolically be our own. "We gotta get it right while we've got the time.. words, words words, you're, you're mind - Shamon! Shamon! You know!"

No, really. It's only been a week. He's an honestly gifted talent within our lifetime. Let's revel in this brief respite from the shocking lack of daily Afghanistan and Iraq explosion victims. Shamon, man!

Oh, but don't revel in the death by chocolate. A terrible end.

dying in a vat of chocolate...what a way to go.

Will they still make him into candy bars?

-Jeff Dahmer

there are worse ways to go...

Down at the brewery Sven had fallen into a vat of beer and drowned. Ole went to Sven's home to notify and consule Lena, Sven's wife. Through the tears Lena asked if her Sven had suffered.
"Don't think so," said Ole, "he got out twice to pee."

The Smothers Brothers had a song about that back in the 60s.

I remember that!

They just released the details of the victim and they actually caught the death on video:

Actually this is an excellent observation...OSHA requires fall protection and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to protect workers in situations like these. If the platform was over 8 feet up or there was a danger of him falling (as there obviously was) he should have been tied off and provided protective clothing. There was obviously a danger to this work area that was not properly mitigated.

I'd say the family has a good case of negligence against the company.

Death by chocolate... there's some chick out there who is PMSing right now who wishes she could be as lucky as this dude.

HUILKAMANIA FOREVER

With almonds is better.

Wow. Life IS like a box of chocolates.
