My favorite, JPW, was the drawn out ebola scare. A relatively unusual virus was touted to be the next black plague (as is piggy-sniffle flu today) and WHO, CDC and NIH drones were all over the place with it trying to scare up increased funding for themselves.
Turns out one almost has to try to catch this virus in order to come down with it, but even today WHO refuses to admit that.
