Some states faced with sinking tax collections and rising debt are going after unused gift cards that bolster their revenue.

South Carolina is considering legislation that would give the state the right to collect unclaimed gift-card credit. A similar measure in Texas to allow the collection of unused credit even from cards that have no expiration date passed that state's House this spring and stalled in the Senate. Texas already collects unused gift cards with expiration dates.

Abandoned property???

The gall of the gov't(s) to take this from people.

If you have a gift card--get it out and use it.

Tyranny coming and already here but ready to take your gift card from the relatives for themselves.

Friggin Thiefs.

Just point the gun at us!

Funniest or most tearful line of the article--

New York returned to their rightful owners around $2,150 in unredeemed gift cards last year.

Yes-- out of $9.6 million in unclaimed or unused gift cards--the state of NY returned $2,150.00 to the owners.

Sounds a little ridiculous to me.

What's next, the gov wants the clothes I do not wear anymore? On the other hand, they can have the lumber scraps piling up in my backyard as long as they come pick it up.

Seems mighty interesting that the two states out front in this piracy are REPUBLICAN strongholds!!

Gotta hand it to the scumsuckers, though. They are true to their primary mission: Screw the middle class every chance you get!!!!

Nice try at deflection. I agree that this is STUPID, but the messiah's new cap and tax bill will fuck the lower class more than anyone.

On the other hand, my wife has had a hysterectomy and does not need the 2 boxes of tampons anymore; maybe the state wants them back.

Chickenfucker cries deflection by pissing and moaning about the energy bill.

When is someone finally going to Change this senile old fart's Depends?

escheat laws - unclaimed property generally reverts to the state after a certain number of years. this is true of dormant bank accounts, outstanding checks, unapplied credits, etc. say a check you wrote to the cable company seven years ago still hasn't cleared. technically, you can't simply reverse that outlay back into your book balance. that money belongs to the state (assuming a 7yr threshold)

Fewwer than half of my state's voters register in the name of either major party. That is the unclaimed property they can't figure out how to take.
