Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, July 01, 2009

A 2-year-old girl in Oxford, Fla., apparently was strangled Wednesday by her family's 12-foot-long pet Burmese python, officials said. Charles Jason Darnell, the snake's owner and the boyfriend of Shaunia Hare's mother, said he discovered the snake missing from its aquarium and went to the girl's room, where he found it on the girl and bite marks on her head.

She should have owned a crock. Crikeess? Everyone knows they make much better pets.

What can you say to a story like this? Too fucking sad for words.

Who the hell owns a 12ft Pyton when you have a small child???? Might as well own a Pittbull. IDIOTS.

Too bad it didn't get the owner. It should have been against the law to own one. They turn them loose in the glades. Big problem.

-BURP-

Too cheap to buy rats.

Mother and boyfriend should be charged. Negligent homicide or at least involuntary manslaughter.

You can't blame the snake.

A pitbull will protect children!

And Maime them. Both should be illegal.

maim, maym, etc

Was the snakes name Monty?

Since she wasn't on guard, Harry Potter didn't see it happen.

Was it a one-eyed? I didn't think they killed - only their offspring are.

I didn't know they make stringy things for Lemon Merangue butt cracks (I know I murdered that word...oh well)

Pythons, PitBulls, whatever. Lets let Obama and the goverment decide for us. After all thats where we are headed. I don't know why anyone in their right minds that would want a snake for a pet but to each it's own. But to have a child around a pet like that. Well cow shit for brains come to mind. The country is being consumed by a snake of democrates we will all be consumed by the Obama. O by the way if you are fat and the python can't consume your fatness you will be taxed.

Sad story, very stupid people. And what I hate the most, are the "don't kill the snake, its not his fault, blah blah.. "

First kill the snake, then charge the idiot owner with negligent homicide.

Sad story, very stupid people. And what I hate the most, are the "don't kill the snake, its not his fault, blah blah.. "

And all the snake had to say about it was "burp"

Sad, stupid, and that mother should be charged with being an idiot. The "boyfriend" should be charged as an accessory to manslaughter.

Should, but won't.

You sick bastards will joke about anything.

A SNAKE IN EVERY OBSTETRICIAN'S OFFICE! for late term abortions...

Pythons, PitBulls, whatever. Lets let Obama and the goverment decide for us.

You Sir,are an asshole

Make just ONE law to apply to any and all such situations. Make incurable stupidity a life sentence offense with no chance of parole. Make sure they are denied the vote. What a difference it would make to the country!

I believe in mandatory sterilization for idiots like these. This story turned my stomach

You sick bastards will joke about anything.

Because I make the "burp" joke"?

I hadn't even read the story. You better learn --since I've never seen your name on here before -- not everyone who comes on DR and leaves a post has the time -- nor the desire -- to either read through each story or go over the details.

"Reverence" is not DR's middle name.

Sometimes you get serious, well-thought out posts, other times you get stupid, retarded responses like "burp." Some come on here for 5 minutes, some come on here for 5 hours. I have done both. Most posts depend on one's mood at the time.

Yes, this was a horror story. There.

Anyone ever met or read about anyone who owns one of these snakes who isn't a douchebag?

Anyone ever met or read about anyone who owns one of these snakes who isn't a douchebag?

I wouldn't go that far, but I admit there's something creepy about having an animal for a pet that has to have live animals for its meals and calling everyone in to watch it eat.

Well, OK. Maybe 'douchebag' isn't too harsh.

Lots of folks have pet boas.
You have to train them properly.

Just keeping a 8 foot python in your house qualifies you as "strange" but to keep one in a house with a 2 year old child makes you not only strange but criminally negligent and insane.

So what if at night the boyfriend put the snake in a bag in the aquarium, did they not think the snake could possibly get out of the bag on its own? Was there a covering over the top of the aquarium?

And when was the python last fed? The 2 year old had bite marks around the head so it appears as though the python was trying to swallow the child.

Also, you'd think a 2 year old would start to cry when the snake first slithered into the baby's bed so you then have to ask where was the mother? Although it's possible, I suppose, if the python was able to quickly crush the baby's neck there may not have been a chance to cry out or make noise.

And not only did these idiots have the 8 ft python, but they also kept a 6 ft. boa constrictor in the house. It's a small family dwelling, not the Florida zoo. Were they nuts?

And every time you read about crazy stuff like this happening, it almost always seems to end up being the fault of some loser boyfriend of the mother's.

Python, pit bull terrier, what's the difference? The kid's just as dead; Criminally negligent homicide.

Were they nuts?

No, they are douchebags.

I believe in mandatory sterilization for idiots like these.

I'm not saying the boyfriend isn't a loser - and a selfish idiot for having the snake in the house with that kid - he definitely is.

But its the mother's job to watch out for the kid. I blame her. If the idiot doesn't have the sense to realize his snake and the kid can't live in the same house, she should have.

The mom and the boyfriend should do time.

Sully,

The problem is that the people in question had no idea that the snake would be dangerous to small children.

Anyone stupid enough to own one of those things, let along two would be too dumb to realize the danger in owning them.

People that own snakes like this are cool.

Yes, in the end it is the mother's responsibility to watch out for her child. Amost any woman's "maternal instinct" (which is ingrained in most women whether or not a child is even their own) should have sent out "red flag" warnings.

One need not be a herpetologist to figure a small toddler might one day be seen by the python as being the equivalant of a possible meal. This is evident by the bite marks on the baby's head where it looks as though the snake had apparently tried to swallow the baby and why I had asked when was the last time the python had been fed

In this case there is more than enough blame to go around.

People that own snakes like this are cool.

So true. They can be dumb in jail. Maybe then they will get it through their stupid thick skulls that it was they who killed the girl. Snake was not licensed. The mother is even more culpable than the boyfriend. And, yes, snake owners are creepy.

The mom and the boyfriend should do time.

There are two acceptable pets for males over 21:

Dog
Fish

Anything else is symptom...

snakes dont kill people stupid pet owners kill people.

Python, pit bull terrier, what's the difference?

Brain size. More importantly, dogs are pack animals that instinctually know from birth the value of the pack and its' place within the pack. A snake has no such value system. A snake will never be able to rationalize the different between its owner, a stranger, a kid, or a wombat. For a snake everything organic is potential food.

It isn't the fault of pit bulls that sadistic fucks steal them, train them, and breed them to be violent. Humans fuck up pits. Snakes on the other hand can't be trained to attack or submit to humans.

I have rescued more than one pit bull from shelters. None of them have ever shown a propensity to attack anything other than Pedigree Country Stew. Xavi, my male pit once broke through my screen door and hid under the bed for hours after it witnessed me in a fistfight with my neighbor. He could sense the anger and wanted to get as far away from it as possible. Meanwhile my docile lil basset hound was foaming at mouth wanting a piece of the action.

How incredibly stupid of the mother and boyfriend!

How incredibly sad--they played the 911 tape--truly awful.

Sometimes I just don't understand people and the way they Don't think.

I have children, and I own 5 snakes, I also have many many friends who own snakes and we all do this responsibly. The last thing that I check before I go to bed at night are doors and windows. including the locks on the cages that my snakes are in. My snakes are locked up 24/7 unless I or my husband have them out. They are our pets and we love them.

There is not a mammal out there that can not do serious harm to a child. Dog, Cat, Ferret, Bunny, Horse, and Rodent have all done their fair share of damage to children. Look it up, I am willing to bet that you find more than 12 deaths since 1980 caused by pets that are mammals. I don't tell you to get rid or your animals because they are dangerous, why should I have to simply because some people are ignorant and can't properly house their pets?

You are so right Tink

=D

A surprising new study released Monday by UCLA's Institute For Child Development revealed that human babies, long thought by psychologists to be highly inquisitive and adaptable, are actually extraordinarily stupid.

The study, an 18-month battery of intelligence tests administered to over 3,500 babies, concluded categorically that babies are "so stupid, it's not even funny."

Best part:
Study results also prompted a strong reaction from President Clinton. "All of us, on some primitive, mammalian level, feel a great sense of pride in our offspring," Clinton said. "It is now clear, however, that these feelings are unfounded. Given the overwhelming evidence of their profound stupidity, we have no choice but to replace our existing infant population with artificially incubated simu-drones, with the eventual goal of phasing out the shamefully stupid human baby forever."

Old article.

CC--a 2 year old won't scream or cry out.

They won't scream or yell when they fall into a pool either.

They will usually sink to the bottom.

"There is not a mammal out there that can not do serious harm to a child. Dog, Cat, Ferret, Bunny, Horse, and Rodent have all done their fair share of damage to children. Look it up, I am willing to bet that you find more than 12 deaths since 1980 caused by pets that are mammals."

Of course. They outnumber large snakes that are capable of harming a human being by a factor that has to be over a thousand. If you only count households with small kids, then the factor has to be in the tens of thousands as most people wouldn't keep a dangerous snake in the house with a small kid. And the small animals you named are more likely to be handled (or mishandled) by children and that's why kids get bit.

Of the animals you named, only a dog or a horse could kill a kid. If a small kid is in a position to be stomped by a horse, the parents are just as stupid as the idiots in this story. With dogs, you have a general idea if the animal is violent or not but if you bring home a new baby you do have to be careful around the dog and if the dog shows any aggression or a disturbing interest in the child you get rid of it (the dog that is). Every large snake is inapprorpiate to have around a small kid.

All pet owners need to be responsible for their pets, no matter what type of pet it is.

These people did not act responsibly for their pets and should be punished for it.

A lot of the snake "tag" happen for the same reason. A snake "tag" and a "bite" are two completely different things when you are talking about snakes. What happened to this child was a "bite" or Feeding response, and as skinny as that snake was, you have to wonder "When was the last time it ate?" Most "tags" are simply a warning to leave the snake alone. And most of the time, people get tagged by a snake.

It took us 4 years of talking and research on reptiles to bring them into our home and even then, we did not bring a snake into the house until EVERYONE was not only Comfortable with the Idea of having one in the house, but also understand that snakes can be very very dangerous and they understand all of the rules and the reptiles are ALL locked up, and we have a room in our house just for the reptiles, and the room is locked up.

And as far as the mammals that I mentioned, I have news for you, a cat can do very serious damage to a child, and I had a bunny as a child that left one nasty bite on me, simply because I spooked it when I picked it up.

"a cat can do very serious damage to a child"

Cats are evil but they can't crush a kid like a python can.

And of course if you own a male cat you have to worry that your kids will be cheesing when they get older....

Look...The point that I am trying to make here is that if the ADULTS in question here had that snake properly housed, under lock and key, and fed this tragedy would not have happened. The Adults in this situation are responsible for what happened.

And of course if you own a male cat you have to worry that your kids will be cheesing when they get older....

Sorry, but you are not responsible, and you don't love them. Snakes don't want to be kept in cages for their entire lives. They are like toys to you.

Why so concerned about keeping them locked up? Because they might get loose and injure or kill somebody? See you in the news!

Tinkerbell I put you in the same category as idiots that keep pitbulls alongside young children. Your house is an accident waiting to happen. You might even be the victim. Snake gets out and the owner is sleeping next thing you know the owner is dead. Snakes were not meant to be pets. They were meant to live out in the wild. Maybe you need to experience a tragedy for you to wake the hell up.

CC--a 2 year old won't scream or cry out.

#46 | Posted by MURPHY at 2009-07-02 01:49 PM

I wouldn't expect to hear any screaming if they fell in the pool and dropped like a rock to the bottom -- kind of hard to scream underwater. But I've seen kids under four scream in terror if a dog scared them. Don't know if something might have happened to make them afraid. Usually they are just curious more than anything else when they see new things, but they can be scared enough to yell and cry.

I think that python was on top of that 2 year old and suffocating the poor baby before there was any chance to do a thing. Just the weight alone of the snake could suffocate the baby.

The Idiots are the ones who blame the Animal over the Owner, when the Owner should be responsible for the Animal.

You do not know me, so you can not say that I do not love my pets, I do. And considering my snakes are closed in their own room while we sleep, you won't be seeing me on the news. I know how to take care of them, and I know how to handle them. And for the record, there isn't a snake in my house currently big enough to hurt one of my children, as they are all under 3' and no bigger around than a nickle, by the time they are that big, my youngest child will be in high school.

There are so many more factors to this case that are not even being addressed simply because the pet snake killed that poor child.
