The 4th has no meaning anymore. We are not free and our gov't has forgotten that were supposed to be endowed by our creator with life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Our supposed leaders (dem and repub) are only 'faces' for the corporate interests that have taken control of our country.

America is dead as an idea and a practical government philosophy. Illumination prevents corporate interests from making money, so it was removed from our national narrative. It was replaced by neurosis, psychosis, narcissisum, hate and petty selfishness.

Happy 4th of July and Happy September 17th, which also has lost meaning.

We should commemorate the 4th each year by tarring and feathering at least one local, state, and federal politician/employee. Seriously.

I don't think we've done it since 1794, The Whiskey Rebellion. I'd guess most people would agree things have pretty much gone downhill since then.

That's when Jefferson said a little revolution is good every once in a while. We did have a civil war after that, however, R8.
I agree with you to a great extent. The two-party stranglehold is killing us and something has to be done to get into their faces about the loss of liberty and prosperity.

What happened to the Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."

They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot of what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't just fight the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government! Perhaps you can now see why our founding fathers had a hatred for standing armies, and allowed through the Second Amendment for everyone to be armed.

I am curious to know what it is that the federal government and their corporate puppet masters are preventing you from doing?

Last night, my girlfriend my Mother and I went down to public square in Cleveland and watched the Cleveland Orchestra (one of the really great reasons to be a resident here, they are a truly supurb orchestra) play a free show followed up by fireworks.

We then walked my girlfriends friend home, (she is understandably worried about homeless folks, most of them are the only slightly violent kind of crazy that used to be housed in state mental institutions until good ol Saviour of the Morning in America Ronnie kicked them all out to take up residence in Doorways and under bushes) We then drove home to our appartment which has a terrific view of the park.

I am here at work, between projects, checking out drudge. I for the most part find my job to be challenging and interesting. The company I work for is helping me to pay for my batchelors degree, and if I wish to pursue it, my masters.

Please. Enlighten me. What exactly am I being prevented from doing?

Sept. 17th, 1787 was the day the constitution was signed.

But for someone that thinks simply because they can go to the park and listen to the symphony means they have 'freedom', this probably has no meaning.

This country is failing because people simply do not have the ability to think outside of concrete terms anymore.

We give thanks and celebrate our country's independence every 4th of July. But we also want to acknowledge those who helped us keep it. Thanks to all our Drudge Retort military veterans for their service to our nation.
