The inner ring suburbs of detroit have their patroll cars just drive up and down the border of the city and the suburb and turn around the Mopes who meander out.

Valisk is right - it's no lie that the suburbs surrounding the Detroit and the worst of the suburbs have a focus on keeping the trash and trouble in Detroit and out of their city. 8-Mile is for real and not just the name of a movie. One side is reasonable the other...

This is on the west side of the city. And I don't know that particular area - but the neighborhood looks reasonable. A lot of Detroit is a war zone though. Next time I am down that way I will venture off the main drag to take some pictures to post. Block after block of what look like bombed out buildings. I mean when you look at bombed out war zones in other countries - they could almost be Detroit. The first time a friend took me for a drive through areas just outside downtown I just shook my head. All I wanted to do was get the hell out of there. Even in downtown it is bad outside a few select pockets.

And what's needed in Detroit, and in many other cities, is leadership, and a determination by the citizens living there that they're not going to tolerate living conditions of that sort.

Crime ridden cities can be cleaned up.. it took Rudy in NY, coupled with the citizens backing him. People snipe at him over this and that detail, but overall, it got done. Its never easy, nothing is perfect, and there's always opposition.. but outside forces are not going to change Detroit.. the people that live there have to decide that enough is enough. And hiding behind racial issues as excuses for intolerable behavior will never do it.

By and large, we all get the government we deserve and accept. Constitutional rights were never intended to be used as societal suicide pact. Gangs do NOT have the right to terrorize neighborhoods.

As far as Detroit's "leadership" goes, it's a pathetic joke.

Most of the bright spots we are seeing in Detroit is a combination of the hard and dedicated work of Dennis Archer (former mayor and HATED by the citizens of Detroit because he reached out so hard toward 'whitey) and businesses - businesses spending incredible amounts of cash and effort to try and restore the city. The result - balkanization. The city DOES have some real nice areas interspersed with some REALLY shitty and, quite frankly, downright scary areas.

I flew there about four years ago to attend a training class in Brighton ( nice place, lots of hot women for a relatively small city).

My first thought when I walked into the airport was that it had the feel of a seedy bus station.

Detroit has become a black run and black dominated city. The people of Detroit are discriminated against and compromised by the fact that they are living with other blacks. That's Sonia Sotomayor's contention in relation to her living among Puerto Ricans such as herself.

The sad fact is that Detroit can only be saved by figuratively being colonialized. There is a huge influx of welare dollars into Detroit through various and sundry programs and under various pretexts. But it seems that such is not enough. What is required is white governance.

Whatever the genetic makeup of the people there, it is not conducive to maintaining a viable community in a technological-scientific society. Since the dynamics extant in our country preclude effective intervention, the community there will continue to languish.

It is possible that sharia law might coerce the inhabitants sufficiently to curtail criminal behavior. In Somalia, four petty thieves each had a leg and an arm or hand severed in a public venue. There was no lengthy delay in imposing the sentence. It may be that sharia law developed to curtail the depredations of people who would not be restrained by less severe means. Since our society limits utilization of means adapted to control various subgroups with their particular proclivities, possibly an underground Islamic organization could take control and restore law and order as a first step. Then positive steps could be taken to try to make the community functional and to develop a productive society utilizing whatever lesser skill sets are available. Of course, the standard of living would be compatible with the skills attainable by the indigenous Detroit population, but compassion and empathy would compel continuation of aid to the forlorn residents of the area.
