Happy pride day to all.

If you have never been to a pride parade, you should put it on your bucket list.

And, it is BYOB.

Good news!!!

TAMPA, Fla. Tampa police say Billy Mays, the television pitchman known for his boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean, has died. He was 50.

Happy Pride Day! To all my friends in SF, enjoy the parade. Man we used to love going to the parade. My wife worked in the Manadnock Building on 3rd and Market, so we had an awesome place to party and watch the parade as it passed right by.

Man, now Billy Mays. They're dropping like flies!

"Is Michael Jackson still dead, Wolf?" - Cafferty

I love Cafferty. He has the exact kind of sense of humor I like -- dry and semi-sarcastic.

Happy pride day to all.

Pride Day? Parades? I guess that explains why Johnson and BL2 won't be here until late.

Billy Mays is dead.

What a strange week.

Keith Richards is still alive.

#13: I read where some guy the other day had in his obit that he couldn't believe Keith Richards outlived him. LOL.

Bullshit. You asswipes can keep saying this but it ain't gonna fly. The economy started to fall in 12/07 and then crashed Sep-Oct 2008.

well you know all about bullshit...

sure...that all sounds like a perfect reason to quadruple the deficit....why not when there are so many dupes around to fall for the snake oil that he is selling

Billy Mays is dead.

Never heard of him until today. At first I thought it was supposed to be "Willy Mays". That would've been sad.

But who the fuck is Billy Mays and why is he newsworthy? Because he sells soap on TV? Fuck. Some people need to get a life.

he has been all over the tv lately and his main claim to fame was that he yelled the whole time

holy shit

yesterday it was 104 and today its supposed to be 103

and IM not talking about arizona dry heat..

You're usual hangout -- the Barbara Bush Library in Houston?

Or is it closed on Sundays?

Seriously, how could anyone survive living in Texas (where it can be both hot and humid) and not have an air-conditioner.

the AC is on but there are a lot of people here and its so hot that a lot of AC just arent getting it done

my sister in law who was born and raised in oregon comes down here and just stands with her arms out away from her and says...you people are nuts..

of course we are also playing golf in january too..
so there is a trade off...

BUT damn...what will we do in August when it GETS HOT>....

AH but my misery was made just a little more endurable

hit a 300 dollar trifecta at calder race park
that means salt grass for steak later...

Do you have central air or just an air conditioner in a couple of rooms?

In the summer my electric bills run around $250 a month with the a/c on. (That includes the water and garbage pick-up too.)

I don't keep the a/c on at night when I go to bed but I have a large oscillating fan and stand in on the dresser amd it keeps the air circulating in the bedroom while you sleep. Even when it's triple digits here you don't really need to turn on the a/c until around 11:00 a.m. or so.

My house has 3 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom (tub and shower) and one 3/4 bathroom (shower only) and I always shut those rooms and the front bedroom doors and vents when the a/c is on. Why waste $$$ trying to also cool rooms down that are rarely used so that saves me some $$$. (Just paid about $200 to replace a part on the a/c and have some more coolant added but you've got to have a/c here -- especially in August-October when it can get super hot.

I can take the heat -- including triple digit heat -- when it only goes for 3-4 days or maybe a week. But when it's non-stop for a month or more (like Dallas had last year?) it can feel like a killer.

A/C's are soo effecient and most of them are "atmosphere friendly."

Look, I live in the NW where we have a meltdown if the temp approaches 88 at anytime during the summer. Our summer, apparently due to earth tilt etc, starts officially between 7/5-7/12. Ny 1/2 way through Sept we'll never see a day near 72+ and even WE have A/C's.

My power bill doesn't suffer, got a "green" A/C system.

W/o the A/c the upstairs of our house would be near 80. Downstairs near 70 and bearable with fans. With the A/C, we keep the entire house at about 67 year round. The damn thing is so effecient the meter barely blips when it kicks on.

Next thing I'm doing is getting a tankless hot water heater. We have NG and there's no sense keeping 50 gallons of water hot all day. Tankless is instantaneous and uses waaaay less NG.

Every little bit helps. Everything we do to get off oil helps us give a big giant FUCK YOU to the ME as US oil demand drops and those fuckers don't have us by the balls anymore.

Re: CC power bill. Our summer bill is about half that at it's worst.

Summer or winter our bill is around $70-$125 a month depending extreme weather swings.

Our summer, apparently due to earth tilt etc, starts officially between 7/5-7/12.

Actually your summer starts the very same minute everyone else's in the Northern Hemisphere does. It is impossible to have more than two solstices a year on the planet. This year it was June 21 at 12:46 AM EDT.

I know, but they make some weird thing up here about out summer starting later due the the latitude and curve/tilt of the earth.

I think it's just one of those "local" things that most areas of the Country experience. "Local Legends", if you will.

I know, but they make some weird thing up here about out summer starting later due the the latitude and curve/tilt of the earth.

You should set the locals straight so as to not perpetuate the myth.

I have to admit that after a lifetime of amateur astronomy, I've never heard anyone claim a different solstice for their particular part of the country. I wonder how that all started?

As a matter of fact, I just heard the weatherman talk about it less than 2 days ago. They mention it every year.

As a matter of fact, I just heard the weatherman talk about it less than 2 days ago. They mention it every year.

Now that's weird. A supposedly educated man perpetuating a myth. But WTF. I'll bet if he's like our local weatherman, he doesn't get the weather prognostications right either. *grin*

I don't know. I never heard about it either until I moved up here over 10 years ago. Every year around solstice/July 4 they mention our summer actually starts July 5 or 12th or something.

While I love astronomy and have some knowledge, I don't know near enough to say if the tilt/curve of the earth could cause 6/21 Solstice at the Equator, but later the further North.

I just know they talk about it up here.

Like I said, I think it's just local lore.

#41: They NEVER get it right. Even less than 12 hours out they can't predict what's coming. Yeah, Puget Sound and the mountains present unique challenges, but give me a break.

I know, but they make some weird thing up here about out summer starting later due the the latitude and curve/tilt of the earth.M

Local latitude has nothing to do with solstice. And the curvature of the earth is pretty much the same everywhere. It bulges at the equator a little bit.

Soltice is when the the point of the ecliptic where the distance from the celestial equator is the greatest.

While I love astronomy and have some knowledge, I don't know near enough to say if the tilt/curve of the earth could cause 6/21 Solstice at the Equator, but later the further North.

Impossible. See diagram in post #44.

There is a specific second in time that the ecliptic (the plane that the sun appears to move in) crosses the celestial equator (the plane that the earth's equator resides). This is the equinox. There is another moment that the two are the furthest apart. This is the solstice.

Arizona moves to allow concealed guns in bars

PHOENIX There was a time in the Wild West that cowboys had to check their guns before they could pull up a bar stool for a drink rules that protected against the saloon gunfights that came to define the frontier era in places like Arizona.

But a bill moving through the Arizona Legislature has some bar owners fearful that the state is turning back the clock to the Old West. Lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow anyone with a concealed-weapons permit to bring a handgun into bars and restaurants serving alcohol.

The bill gives bars discretion to keep gun-toting patrons out, and anyone with a weapon would not be allowed to drink. But the bill has angered bar owners who believe booze and guns are a recipe for disaster.

"This might be one of the stupidest things that I have heard of," said Mike Nelson, who owns Pomeroy's bar in Phoenix and plans to post a sign on his front door outlawing guns in his bar as soon as possible. "Can you think of a single reason guns and alcohol should be intertwined?"

Arizona moves to allow concealed guns in bars

Now psychopaths who until now did not do a shoot-em-up rampage in a bar will be able to. They have been waiting for such a law to go on a murdering rampage in a bar, you know.

Most of you are probably too young to remember "My Little Margie", but 50's sitcom actress Gale Storm is the latest in the rash of Hollywood passings...

Gale Storm, perky star of 1950s TV, dies at 87

LOS ANGELES Gale Storm, whose wholesome appearance and perky personality made her one of early television's biggest stars on "My Little Margie" and "The Gale Storm Show," has died at age 87.

Storm, who had been in failing health in recent years, died Saturday at a convalescent hospital, said her son, Peter Bonnell.

Before landing the starring role in "My Little Margie" in 1952, Storm starred in numerous B movies opposite such stars as Roy Rogers, Eddie Albert and Jackie Cooper. After her last TV series, "The Gale Storm Show," ended in 1960 she went on to a successful singing career while continuing to make occasional TV appearances...

...With her movie roles diminishing in the early 1950s, Storm followed the path of many fading movie stars of the day and moved on to television.

"My Little Margie" debuted on CBS as a summer replacement for "I Love Lucy" in 1952. It quickly became an audience favorite and moved to its own slot on NBC that fall.

The premise was standard sitcom fare: Charles Farrell was a business executive and eligible widower, Storm was his busybody daughter who protected him from predatory women.

The year after "My Little Margie" ended its 126-episode run in 1955, she moved on to "The Gale Storm Show," which lasted until 1960. This time she played Susanna Pomeroy, a trouble-making social director on a luxury liner.

Goat wants to be friends, Nulli, and said he'll buy you a beer at a nice bar he knows of in Phoenix.

What was Gale Storm's middle name? Wendy?

I never had any LPs myself, however, my two older sisters amassed such a collection that my brother and I never went wanting, until they moved away, but by that time cassettes were beginning to be all the rage.

Jay, I have to say it again because few people understand. That 24-70mm is awesome. It is now my favorite lens. I've gotten some low light shots on the drill floor (where we can't use flash because of the distraction) that are absolutely killer. I'm in love

It's heavy, but I think I can get used to it as a walk-around.

Although I said, in retrospect, that I would have opted for a prime in that focal length, the 24-70 really does produce nice colors that become obvious when compared to the 18-55 kit lens.

I doubt weight will be a problem for you or I, I just wanted to mention it the other day so you wouldn't be surprised by it. There's a good possibility I'll get layed off for a week or two in the very near future, if so, I'll definitely be walking around for a whole day with that lens through the Red River Gorge here in Ky.

Beautiful day. Did some shots at a wedding reception. I went to eat and scram. Moving to the my buddies hobby farm next week and it was sunshine and enough breeze to make 88 seem pleasant.

We pulled some weeds in his beds. The heat really stressed the soil moisture. It's an organic garden and he'll truck some of it.

One of the advantages of farming is that you get ahead of things and then head for a stream and float fish. Or maybe ride horses, go swim in a lake. Chris uses 40 perch per bed and composted manures. Nothing else. Corn over 6 feet tall, tomatoes not far behind.

Chris damn near died in an accident this winter and his left hand is dead. Maybe a candidate for restoration but it's a tough break for a carpenter. He had a place on the Landing. Nice cabin cruiser and a Glastron Carlson with a 455 Olds. So we've been neighbors before. He has an empty trailer they lived in before they built the house.

For me it's a vacation. I always like farm country in the summer. July and August. Anyway...

Sounds like a nice farm your buddy has -- 6 ft. high corn, tomatoes, nearby stream. What's a "hobby farm" anyway? A farm that's not your only source of making a living, just kind of farming you do on the side? I'll bet he's really appreciative of you coming to help him out, with his bad hand and all. Last thing a carpenter (or farmer) needs is to lose the use of his hand.

So you heading out to your new place in Missouri after you're done at his farm -- where you were going to move to work on another business venture? Bet you'll miss your place on the river but you can always go back if things work out differently. One good thing is you don't have to transfer kids out of school and have a lot of other stuff weighing you down.

Sunshine, 88 degrees, and a breeze sounded like a nice day weatherwise in Missouri. It was about 100 degrees here today -- hottest day so far of the year and will be this way for the rest of the week. I was getting some stuff down around here while it's a bit cooler right now. Even the a/c wasn't cutting it much anymore by the time it reached 5 p.m.

Well, like you said -- "it's summertime" so it's suppose to be hot.

Be nice to spend a "Huck Finn" kind of summer -- just lazing around on some river, no cares or woes. But once your childhood is gone, no more sloughing off responsibilities, huh? But, hey, you can still have fun.

Well, take care. Talk to you later. Got a couple more things to do and then I'm calling it quits for tonight.

What happened to Scarey E??

[LIVE]

Chris's mom bought the family farm and he grew up north of Lawrence. 80 acres [common in older farms] but she's been selling off road frontage and keeping the fields.

Chris has a homestead on 4 acres adjoining common ground, and his wife has a pasture for her herd. He raises chickens and The Garden's his pride and joy. Gourmet varieties.

Amber used to be a jockey so she prefers English saddle. She's got a filly who will follow you into the house. All her horses are really mellow. She's got a blanket rig so I can ride bareback without chafing. I find a horse I like I might buy it. Since they forbid slaughter there's so many horses that the prices have dropped considerably.

By the end of August I'll be moving to West Plains. Good trails down there but I don't want to trailer a horse around so I'd have find a place to board near the forest.

I'll live in the city. I need the libraries. and solid connections. I won't be coming back here. Too much dust. The roads are limestone. All unpaved roads are limestone. And this place gets too much traffic. It's like living in a chalk factory. Not good for computers and printers, but I'm glad for the sunsets and the general ambiance.

I'll be off the grid for a while. Probably to some people's relief - or scorn. I'll be thinking of you guys next week when we start kayaking and fishing. Little warm up on the lakes and then down the Current after the 4th.

I've seen a movie made by a my daughter's kayak club and she's shooting Class 4 aggressively. Proud father here. But I'll just be putting along trying to catch dinner.

Photos of Chris' Accident

Chris started down this hill and it was glare ice. By the time it crossed the culvert it was sideways and they caught a rut and that launched in the air and then sideways into the embankment. Two foot to the left and they would have gone into the creek.

That stretch faces the river and so a high northern wind and freezing rain will paint that slope in an hour. Anyway that's how he hurt his arm. Damaged the trunk for the radial, median, and ulnar nerves. Busted up his rib cage pretty good too.

Afk--You keep mentioning this state run media. What group are you talking about? When did the fed gov't take over any media group? Oh, you mean the Obama "in the tank" argument? Sure, but hardly state-run. If the fourth estate doesn't like what Obama and the White House are doing, they can damned well take action and be real reporters. Just as they could have when they softballed Bush for several years. Come on, man. It's corporate media, not gov't media. Not liberal or conservative--corporate. If Rupert thought he would have made millions (billions?) by creating a more liberal organization with Fox News, he would have done so.
