Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Saturday, June 27, 2009

Detroit City Council member Monica Conyers, the wife of Rep. John Conyers (D.-Detroit), pleaded guilty this morning to conspiring to commit bribery in exchange for supporting a sludge contract with a Houston company. Conyers was charged for accepting two payments from a Synagro Technologies official in late 2007, including one in a McDonald's parking lot.

I am sure old John never had a clue where all that money came from.

Just another corrupt democrat on the take. Being black and the wife of a prominent democrat I wonder if she will ever see the inside of a prison.

come on democrats start defending her!

Really? Ouch.

Guilty.

If she is found guilty, throw her in jail.

Don't you ever get tired of being a partisan hack? This happens to D's and R's. It is an unfortunate element of our system. When people get caught -- no matter what their party registration -- let the investigations proceed and the legal process unfold along prescribed lines.

Judge hasn't sentenced her yet, but it could be up to 5 years, and a $200k fine, maximum.

My guess is since its a first offense, no priors, probation and a fine.

No mandatory minimums for bribery?

Any jail time and we'd be done.

Aren't they all "first offense, no priors"?

She should get some jail time.

Will she resign? That's the question.

#14 | Posted by Hagbard_Celine

She didn't plead to bribery - conspiracy to commit bribery.

Jail time? You're talking about the American legal system here. Just this month Donte Stallworth got 30 days for killing somebody while driving drunk. Meanwhile, a guy who stole Lance Armstrong's bike got 2 years.

Aren't they all "first offense, no priors"?

Uhm, well yes, I guess, except for the ones who have prior records.

Really? Horrendous.

LOL

Update - under the terms of her plea she could get 30-37 months (Federal sentencing guidelines)

I hope she does time, she's one crazy bitch. Don't care much for her husband either but I read 2 Detroit paper sites daily and while others are likely to be charged theres been no hint of John being involved.

I'd dump her for the indiscretion regardless of whether or not she serves time - which is doubtful. She'll resign, do public service, and get off with probation.

she's a racist nutcase:

" Detroit City Council President Monica Conyers had to be restrained during a confrontation last week with Councilman Kwame Kenyatta in which she hurled insults at Kenyatta about his hearing aid, health and education.

Sources who described the incident on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter said the Feb. 4 argument escalated after Conyers called Kenyatta stupid, following his insistence that she submit in writing her request to cut his budget.

When Kenyatta asked her what she said, Conyers responded he needed to learn how to talk to a woman.

Kenyatta shot back that when he was with a woman, he would do so. That prompted Conyers to yell at Kenyatta that he was stupid, citing his lack of a college degree, to tell him he "can't hear" a dig at his hearing aid and to try to rub in his face rumors that Kenyatta has cancer.

As at least one council staffer and a council security officer restrained Conyers while she tried to walk toward Kenyatta, he retorted that he hears just fine, doesn't have cancer and told her she needs help. Kenyatta made a report with the council's security unit about the incident, which took place in his office."

Whenever a republican is caught in a scandal, I'm sure Doc is right there to remind all the democrats how This happens to D's and R's.

I agree Oohrah.

I have said on numerous occasions that I believe Repubs, despite my bias toward conservative politics, have been worse than Dems on certain major issues, and I believe corruption to be one of them.

I don't know how it happened, and I don't chalk it up to media bias, but it just seems every week we're hearing about another repub caught in a scandal.

It's just funny seeing a hack like Doc complain about someone else being a hack.

Mr. Conyers is under investigation himself, isn't he? He's acquired quite a bit of undeclared overseas property, didn't he, with rumors floating about that the sources of funds for such acquisitions are not apparent.

I've always liked Conners. He just is a lightweight when it comes to feathering his nest using his office to do so, settling for chump change while possibly inculpating himself, rather than being a slickster and making big bucks the way Harry Reid is doing, and Lloyd Bensten, and Ladybird Johnson, and so many others did.

Surely you can provide a link if he is. In the meantime,

"I also want to make it equally clear that the evidence offered no suggestion that U.S. Rep. John Conyers, Mrs. Conyers' husband, had any knowledge or role in Mrs. Conyers' illegal conduct, nor did the congressman attempt to influence this investigation in any way."

What's the difference between a bribe and a campaign contribution?

Well, for one, there are limits to campaign contributions.

Of course. Who ever heard of a black person going to jail?

If Conyers' wife is taking bribes, doesn't it stretch the imagination a bit to think that he is not corrupt also? I like what I know about John Conyers, but this story makes me wonder.

I like Conyers. But if his wife is taking bribes, I would just as soon not have him be in Congress. The potential that his vote has been corrupted is too great.

I wonder how Mr. and Mrs. Conyers are going to like having protestors camped out in front of their house instead? -- #57 | Posted by BENDOR

Rep. Conyers was included as a target of the investigation, and "the evidence offered no suggestion that ...[he] had any knowledge or role in Mrs. Conyers' illegal conduct..." (from the article).

Conyers has served his district and the country with grace and distinction for 43 years. His dogged inquiries into Nixon's illegal activities earned him the #13 spot on Nixon's enemies list, he has been a persistent advocate for national health care, and he was responsible for breaking the Downing Street Memo (secret agreement between the U.S. and the U.K. to manufacture an excuse to invade Iraq).

He's been badly betrayed by his wife. Remember who the criminal is, and don't drag his name through the mud with her.

It'll make a lot of people wonder, and may well end his career. I know any number of people who actively hide what I think of as trivial things from their spouses, though. (Your wife can't know you bought more cd's? Really??)

He's been in office since 1965, was on Nixon's enemies list, and exposed the Bush-Blair Downing Street Memo. Given how aggressively *any* black politician was investigated during these times, I have a hard time believing he could get away with anything.

let's see. I like Conyer's personal also. But you are his staunch defender.

Is your position that even if Conyers were a crook, say the investments in the Caribbean which were unreported and untaxed, and the accumulation of wealth without a rational legal source, were to provide proof that he was a crook in his own right, nevertheless his misconduct should be excused because he opposed Nixon and he disclosed the so-called Downing Street memo for whatever it said.

Do you think he should:

1) not be prosecuted

2) remain in office

3) retain his committee chairmanship, or

4) be prosecuted and if convicted receive a light sentence, not jail time, or

5) because of his betrayal of trust he should have the book thrown at him?

What's your position? Is it if he's guilty he should be given a pass?

wow she is pure ghetto trash.

You have no idea, Jackass - her tirades make this likely illegality pale by comparison.

Having said that, I don't agree with the guilt-by-assocation thing.

I am no fan of John Conyers, but he is nowhere NEAR the level of batshit crazy that his wife Monica is.

The headline kinda pisses me off - this isn't about John Conyers' wife it's about Monica Conyers. Until he is in someway tied to her transgressions, this story should be about her; not him.

Hey Johnson how about a link concerning John Conyers being under investigation?
