In the end, Madoff comes off as a tired and disgraced old man, who is probably going to spend the rest of his life in prison.

True that.

He's also a poster child for why deregulation of the markets (or lax enforcement of regulations) is a bad idea.

The free hand of the market is a thief and Madoff made off with so many people's money despite a lot of warning signs that he was the Prince of Thieves.

Hope he does hard time but as CChris noted he most likely won't.

At least let him be locked up till he dies as a lesson to any others who would let "greed is good" be their mantra.
