What do you do when you've just hanged someone for murder, and then their "victim" pops up alive and healthy a few towns away?

The trial and conviction of Jack Marion was seriously abbreviated. Marion's verdict was read after just one hour of deliberation, and he was hanged for his crime on March 25, 1887.

Sounds like a right wing heaven.

Jurors are so gullible. They will believe anything a prosecutor tells them. So what if there is no evidence to support the claim, as long as it is a cop or a DA making it.

you say oops?

Sounds like a right wing heaven.

Knee jerk first post. Congrats, 726! you wasted no time

These are a little stale wouldn't you think to be making modern comparisons? Except for the one Aussie case (where no one was executed) these were all in centuries past.

Why couldn't the headline read.. "women burned for being witches?"

That happened in centuries past as well.

Why couldn't the headline read.. "women burned for being witches?"
That happened in centuries past as well.

Also currently.

We don't hang em anymore.

This is a testament to the abolition of capital punishment.

I support the death penalty for republicans only

When we start hanging prosecutors for misconduct and cops for lying on the stand then there will fewer - and perhaps NO - more innocent people going to the gallows or facing incarceration.

It still turns my stomach when I think of those lawyers in Chicago who claimed they were bound by ethics not to speak out while a man served 23 years for a crime he didn't commit.

Time to end sovereign immunity.

What a great thread! Now about the left wing social murder of Whittaker Chambers? FBI files released later proved he was right about Alger Hiss.
When you radicals destroy my party and anyone else in your way, it is never, never an injustice!
You radicals are what destroyed America just when the labor and anti-poverty movement had won the battle. Now fellating the same sex is far more important to you boobs.

When you radicals destroy my party

You guys destroyed your own party, wake up!

Now fellating the same sex is far more important to you boobs.

yeah that's what its all about.

freedom(mind your own business)

Thanks!

It had to be said. You know it is true.

Funny how Goat seems to never criticize right wing knee jerk posts... only left wing knee jerk posts.

Hmmmmmmm.

Just sayin....

FF. Sad but true.

Funny how Goat seems to never criticize right wing knee jerk posts...

Funny how you seem to have a case of selective reading. I've done it many, many times. I criticized Nanc's thread about the folks calling Obama Hitler just a few hours ago for example.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm not sure what you are 'just sayin' except for a lie.

All of you idiots need to get over the political redorick of your respected parties, yes we can disagree but when the discussion dies and is replaced with meaningless mind dribble about liberals being idiots and republicans being hate mongers then we all lose. Can't you see that the two parties are playing us as fools; as long as they have a divide in the country we will never win. Haven't you heard of a little quote by Julius Caesar?, "Divide and Conquer". When they can keep this strategy up then we will always be F'ed. Bush and his spending was horrible for this country, but Obama only makes it worse. There is no hope and change with this politician, he only exagerates the problem for political and monitary gain. Open your eyes or we are all doomed. (maybe not us because times will get tough but we will live through them, the 'doomed' times will be when our children cannot save for their futures because the gov't taxes them into oblivion to pay for our ridiculous spending of today)

Have you ever sat on a jury?, I doubt it. I have 3 times and I can tell you from my experience that is not the case at all.

Thanks for playing.

The other jurors on those cases were struck by the odd behavior of chicken guano, who was always bringing up Barney Frank's cock and suckers, or something about hope and change.

The death penalty is not an effective deterrent anymore. If it is to be effective, it must be administered quickly. This cannot happen in our legal system as it is currently configured. In our current system, I would favor a lifetime of hard labor for those offenses worthy of the death penalty.

If they were to revise the "rules" and administer the execution the day after the offense, then it might be more of a deterrent. This would only work in specific cases where there is a boatload of witnesses and a "smoking gun". And by boatload I mean like 10. Otherwise, life sentence of hard labor. Do you hear that HERM?

"The death penalty is not an effective deterrent anymore."

I'll believe that when one returns to commit more crimes.

At least try a little bit. By your logic, a lifer kept in a well run prison achieves the same goal.

Capital punishment is nothing more than revenge, it's not about justice.

"At least try a little bit. By your logic, a lifer kept in a well run prison achieves the same goal"

No, they commit crimes in prison.

Ultimately my point is this: when folks pretend the death penalty isn't a deterrent, they conveniently ignore the fact these miscreants are no longer among the perpetrators.

And you are conveniently ignoring the fact that the legal system makes mistakes and kills innocent people.

Ero the death penalty itself creates more innocent deaths.

Plus the fact that criminals like kidnappers are less likely to kill their victims in order to remove potential witnesses if the crime they've committed is a capitol offense.

The old "may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb" adage comes to mind here.

If the government proved itself incapable of making mistakes in terms of prosecuting the guilty then Spud'd have no problem with the application of the death penalty.

As reality has shown time after time that they cannot be trusted to do so then the all too final solution of the death penalty is and should be off the table.

Especially in light of a legal system in which the rich and guilty tend to get off while the poor and innocent are too often imprisoned for crimes which are essentially pinned on them.

"Innocent until proven broke."

Interesting article again, Zat.

Be Well.

"And you are conveniently ignoring the fact that the legal system makes mistakes and kills innocent people."

Where did I do that? I'm approaching this as a statistician, and the numbers just don't back you opinion.

"If the government proved itself incapable of making mistakes in terms of prosecuting the guilty then Spud'd have no problem with the application of the death penalty."

You could use that "logic" across the entire spectrum of enforcement.

"...a legal system in which the rich and guilty tend to get off while the poor and innocent are too often imprisoned for crimes which are essentially pinned on them."

Agreed.

Let's see 726, are you saying that your post was "a left wing jerk post," properly criticized, or that you are "a left wing jerk" posting? Knees. We don't need "no stinkin' knees."

The Democrats went on a full court press against the Republicans and with their "dibs" on the media, did not need to address Republican initiatives. There strategy was just attribute something to the Republicans and denominate it as bad without analysis, and keep identifying the Republicans as "bad." The Pavlovian conditioning worked.

There were few issues that were subjected to analysis. When commentators and reporters unashamedly adulate a candidate and office-holder and are uncritical of him, they are demeaning themselves and abandoning their charge. What is so unreasonable is that Chris Matthews can state that looking at Obama causes a thrill to run down his leg, and not have the perspective to be embarrassed. I wonder if Matthews has a shrink that he sees regularly. If so, he's be well-advised to explore his being so oblique and also what causes the sensation to occur. Weird.

[Frank Drebin is emptying out his files after being kicked off the force]

Frank: Hey! The missing evidence in the Kelner case! My God, he really was innocent!

Ed: He went to the chair two years ago, Frank.

Frank: Well, uh...

[Frank Drebin quickly shoves the evidence back into the file cabinet]
